practical or a gimmick?
>>
it's better than not having a stock
it's not as good as an actual stock
>>
Practical in its time, kinda a gimmick now that everybody is used to low-footprint holsters and retractable stocks don't take up significant space anyway.
>>
If you have time to get the gun out of its little box and put it together, you have time to go get a rifle
PCC's with a folding stock fit the niche this was supposed to

Suffers from the “have your cake and eat it too” mentality of the time. Decent enough for its time, but was immediately outclassed as soon as practical submachine guns were invented.

imma take a Glock 29, due to short height, and make a stock holster so the gun fits inside a water tight compartment.

WTF can't you put a 6" barrel on a stubby Glock? WTF does the gun even "know" if its a 4" or 6" or 9" barrel???

A 4.5-inch barrel is the longest standard aftermarket barrel length available for the Glock 29 from major manufacturers like KKM Precision and Storm Lake, which typically offer barrels between 4.41 inches and 4.70 inches to fit the compact frame. While some users seek 6-inch barrels for hunting or long-range accuracy, these are generally not available or legally restricted in many states due to the frame's limited clearance, with Lone Wolf noting that 4.8 inches is approximately the maximum physical length possible without modification.

This, really. A product that was just on the line between gimmick and practical at the time it was new.
Got overtaken by things like folding stock SMGs.

The C96 is sexy AF though.
And it even has the connection to the first SMGs, the drum mag was the same on that and the MP-18

You are mixing up the C96 with the Luger P08

There was an actual trend back to auto-pistols during the Cold War. Stechkin, Scorpion, Micro-Uzi, TEC-9...

C96 stock is too much of a compromise between a holster and a stock to do either right. It’s a big block of wood hanging off your hip, and also doesn’t have a good way to grip. Sight picture is decent at least.

Certainly not juſt a gimmick, but the purpoſe has been ſuperceded by ſhort-barreled rifles and ſubmachine guns. Remember, theſe ſtocks were intended to improve the accuracy of a piſtol when firing at diſtances the average ſhooter would have trouble with when firing with a one-handed or even two-handed poſition, but ſtill within effective range of the reſpective caliber.
