There is a cover between the compartments where the commander can go between the engine and the front, it must be hot as all hell in there because that is where it drives the hydraulic sending unit. No wonder VOGs bounce off of them, the engineering/command compartment/hydraulic unit is under the thickest part of the barrel.

We really need cheap high efficiency lasers to end the drone & missile meta, it's getting insanely dull. The other upside to laser weaponry is that fully masked helmets will be required to avoid eye damage, which will be additionally futuristic.
