Then look at a ballistics chart and figure out how much error in range estimation will cause you to miss. A laser rangefinder can let you use .308 where otherwise you might need .300WM.
From what distance is the question..308 will work. .30-06 will work from a little farther. .300 will work from a bit farther from that.Decide the cost you're willing to pay and the weight you're willing to carry.

You really need to get away from the kitchen sink approach, sport. Get an '06 or a 308 for deer and then talk to people who actually hunt elk. That's an entirely different ballgame to deer.
