>shotgun slugs have shit range because they aren't aerodynamically shapedI don't get it, can't they just load shotgun shells with spitzer type projectiles instead for longer range? Why do shotgun slugs strictly NEED to be these Brenneke-style rifled projectiles? I know shotguns are smoothbore but how much worse can the accuracy possible be otherwise?
>>65099118you know its hollow right?
>>65099128What's your point? They can still do a spitzer style round with a solid tip
>>65099130yeah sabots exist im not understanding your problem other than just ignorance of whats out there
>>65099118Shotgun=strength buildRifle=dex buildIf you make a projectile sharper, less energy is spent on smacking into the target and more is spent on making it go farther
>>65099118Glue a plastic cone into it for aerodynamics and post results.
>>65099118Is quite useful they have short ranges but are devestatig in that range, If you want a rifle buy a rifle
>>65099130Now jam that into a tube magazine >b-but they make top to bottom magazines too!Yeah, ammo manufacturers don’t give a shit about your niche market. I’d tell you to reload but you’re just a stinky nogunz jeet posting stock photos on a basket weaving forum
>>65099118>shotgun slugs have shit range because they aren't aerodynamically shapedNo. They are shit at long ranges because their smoothbore barrels are typically 5-10 MOA.
>>65099118Why aren't fin stabilized Slugs more popular?
>>65099387You mean fin-stabilized jet-propelled slugs, right?
>>65099118Most spitzers are tail heavy and need to spin to stabilize. Combine that with low velocity that limits effective range anyway and you might as well shoot brenneke slugs.
>>65099118OP is too retarded to understand he wants an inline muzzle loader and would also get more and longer hunting time.
>"why don't we do all this work to turn a shotgun into a rifle"because we already have rifles, anon.
>>65099118The pseudo-rifling on the slug can only impart so much rotation. A long projectile requires a faster spin to stabilize. A really long projectile becomes impractical to spin stabilize which is why APDS is FS.
>>65099118>shotgun slugs have shit range because they aren't aerodynamically shapedNo, retard.Shotgun slugs have shit range because shotguns don't have rifled barrels.Don't post here ever again.
>>65099118>strictly NEED to beThey don't. You're just igorant. Another good example is the BRI sabot.>I know shotguns are smoothboreNow think, einstein. If you can't use spin to stabilize the projectile, what options do you have? Drag stabilization. You make the nose of the slug heavier than the back. There's two ways to do that: a Foster design or similar where the nose is solid and the rear is hollow, or you stick a tail on the back. Either way the goal is the same: design it so the center of drag is behind the center of mass.>But but what about muh spitzerThat's the opposite. It has the center of mass behind the center of drag. It's unstable without spin.
yeah
>>65099118>>65100081Some shotguns actually do have rifled barrels, they are known as slug guns and are usually for hunting.
>>65099118Foster slugs are designed the way they are because chokes dummy.
>>65100552That explains the ribs aka "rifling". The rest of the design is for drag stabilization.
>>65100586A full choke is smaller diameter than a rifled slug. To make it safe to fire a rifled slug out of any choked gun the slug has to be able to deform. This is why the slug has a concave hollow inside, so the sides can deform before pressure makes the gun kaboom.
>>65100685>A full choke is smaller diameter than a rifled slug.Correct.>To make it safe to fire a rifled slug out of any choked gun the slug has to be able to deformYes.> This is why the slug has a concave hollow insideNo. That's why it has ribs. The concave hollow is for drag stabilization. Its presence shifts the center of gravity in front of the center of mass. Compare to other slugs that have ribs yet are much thicker than a rifled Foster slug, like BPI Thug Slugs or Brenneke. Hell Brenneke's website even explains what the ribs are for.
