which blade shape is best or self defense?
>>
>>65100907
the cold steel voyager xl line is on sale for under $44 and i want to pick one for self defense. they have a bunch of different shapes and i dont know which one to get.

im not a trained knife fighter and my primary defense would be running away like a bitch from everything so this would just be a last resort tool.

The knife I carry for people is a cheap shank with a sheath that's very nice in its price range. I've bought more expensive knives with worse sheaths. People don't think about the sheath enough but even if you absolutely expect to use a weapon most of what you'll be doing is carrying it. Of course the whole point of the thing is really so I can get to my gun.

CS's Voyager line is reasonably solid if that's what you're married to, you can get whatever shape appeals to you most because they'll all be functionally identical. Where are you seeing them on sale?
>>
>>65100907
i personally carry a glock brand glock knife for opening boxes and a glock brand glock glock for self defense

Fixed blade knife, 4-6 inches, has a design that supports both stabs and cuts. I'm very fond of trailing points like these three I'm about to link, but other shapes can work too.

>self defense?
i can tell you one thing if it doesnt have serrations its shit
my vote is basically pic rel
>cheap as shit because its polymer (10 bucks)
>serrations for that sweet sweet cutting performance
>dagger shape literally made for stabbing and not much else
>pretty long 31cm/12in overall length
the only downside is its made from polymer, but that could become a positive depending on your usecase
>>65101316
cold steel is a pretty based company

Curve is for choppinig, straight is for stabbing or slashing, regardless of steel used

Also depends on distance, and momentum on your body.

i live in a cuckstate and cant carry fixed blades hence the big folders
>>
>>65102351
Weird, for my state fixed blades of any length are legal to carry, folders are limited to like 2.75" or something small like that.
>>
>>65102811
>>65102811
that makes no sense even by retarded knifebanner leftist logic
>>
>>
>>65102811
in my state of commiefornia any folder is allowed thres no restriction on length but a fixed blade is a felony to carry concealed. you can theoretically carry it openly but you will probably invite harassment from the soccer mom SJW crowd who will call police with false reports about a crazy knifeman in order to get you shot by panican policetards.
>>
>>65103013
In Washington “furtive carry” of a fixed blade is against the law.
>>
>>65100907
>self defense
Assuming you mean knife-fighting in a CDS, generally 4'' fixed blade is preferred in knife fighting systems. Easy to grip and deploy.
>>
>>65103368
the fuck does that mean? i know what furtive means but that is literally a subjective adjective that entirely depends on the subjective assessment of the observer. furtive is not an objective definition
>>
Does anyone here make their own knives?

Welcome to legislation. Enjoy your confusion.
>>
To the other Anon who also bought a Guardian Tactical Apex, my blade also has some play in it. This doesn't bug me either. It launches out like a slingshot, and the action is real smooth so I have no complaints. Particularly at the price point.
>>
>>65103770
>1) Every person who:
>(b) Furtively carries with intent to conceal any dagger, dirk, pistol, or other dangerous weapon; or
is guilty of a gross misdemeanor punishable under chapter 9A.20 RCW.

And the one case law was overturned after a long ass time. I don’t think an exposed pocket fixed blade would run afoul of the law. Blue states are buttfuckingly gay.

I have the spyderco bow river you linked. (picrel-mine) Classic roach belly shape, tried and true over a hundred years. Great history to that specific blade shape, worth digging into actually. I know knife guys in this thread would find it interesting. Anyway, great sheathe included. The stitched leather has never failed me. The handle is nice and fat toward the back, and thins up a bit more toeard the blade. Good for a hammer grip or more delicate tasks. The blade had a great curve and wicked sharp edge with a clean flat grind. I have relied on it for everything from meat/fruit/wood prep to self defense when in bad areas of town. It has absolutely zero rust or marks on the blade, even when worn in the rain and my dumbass forgetting to dry it off.
>>
>>65103770
>the fuck does that mean?
It means they didn't just ban concealed carry but also every open carry that does not make the knife obvious. Leaving the wording ambiguous makes it easier to arrest people. Anyone who carries a knife on the back of their belt or a neck knife could be arrested, and then it's up to a jury if they're guilty.

>>65104429
>Great history to that specific blade shape
I wouldn't know about all the cultures that used them, but I do know that when thrusting, the knives slide in much easier than even some daggers intended for stabbing. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/7XAYXWnR3qI
>>
>>65104449
That is a good demonstration and makes sense how she describes it. Melissa usually does a good job in her videos showing stuff off and explaining things. The bow river would be good at thrusts then, with that curve. More of a slice inward than a "pierce".
As for the history, that blade shape was very popular in the western USA during the gold rush. Used by everyone from policeman to cowboys to wives prepping food. A universally solid choice no matter the task at hand. It can be traced back to the 17th century British colonists. This was the type of knive traded to native Americans, and we have historical evidence that Lewis and Clark themselves carried a roach belly style knife. Anyway, sorry to rant a bit, I just think it is neat how it relates to US history.
>>
>>65104475
>I just think it is neat how it relates to US history.
Honestly, it's probably a common enough design to have existed since the beginning of knives made from metal (as opposed to stone). You see, the design is also great for skinning animals you've hunted.

To answer op’s question that’s the one on the left, filet knives are preferred by butchers because they’re thin and flexible. If it can’t take the legs off a cow it’ll work on a person

A thin Stiletto/Bayonet or a Tanto. Slashing is useless in a life or death scenario. Many military knives are clip points due to being primarily utility blades. A needle point stiletto will penetrate several layers of clothing where a wide blade profile will have trouble. The ti-lite series is probably the best self defense profile blade on the market but is useless for much else and can be slow to open without a lot of practice waving it.

Random cold sttel mention, the 6 inch tilite is heavy enough to beat someone with, but why carry something so big? I guess if there's a threat a county over and you're sitting down. The girth in the pocket makes it a bit inconvenient too, though the wave style pocket hook is satisfying to deploy.

I have a native lightweight 15v but I haven't used it too much yet.
>>
>>65106858

It's pretty wonderful, especially after a resharpen. The one in my pic is a user and it has held up great.
It does spot pretty easily, but I don't mind. I'd say I like it almost as much as K390.
>>
>>65106869
Cool. I will have to carry it more.
Is it supposed to be harder to chip than k390? I used my k390 delica to cut away a sticker on my computer mouse so I could access the screw holes and I chipped a tiny bit of the end off.
>>
>>65106924

I've found them to be comparable. Don't let factory edges dissuade you. I've found that the super hard tool steels do best after a few light sharpenings. I know Spyderco uses lubricated wheels to factory sharpen their blades, but I still think it fucks with the temper. After sharpening on 800 grit diamond stones and 2 micron strop they are both fantastic (K390 and 15v). Like m4 (my fav for a long time), but better

It's legal to go over 3.5" if your job requires it. (Local laws may be different. Some restrictions apply. Void where prohibited.) Until recently, my job was insulating. We use knives. There's no way that I'd start chopping up fiberglass with my Spyderco unless I'd fucked up and left my work knives someplace unreasonably far away, but I carried it for work all the same. Now I'm an AC&R tech. You don't need a knife to recharge a refrigerator, but it can be handy to open the packaging that some of the parts come in. So I still carry one because I need it for my job. Does your job require a knife?

>it gets worse, i work for the federal government

>there have been times where i've been given a pat down by marines in order to get to where i need to go to do the job

tl;dr nobody gives a fuck about most laws in WA anymore, and folder lengths were towards the bottom of the list back when they still did. If the cops hassle you, tell them that you need it to open your fentanyl or something. It's Washington. Nobody cares.
>>
>>65106378

When arteries are cut, they retract and shrink because they're elastic. It's an evolved defense mechanism that inhibits major bleeding. Smooth, clean cuts prevent the artery from sealing itself effectively. Messy, shredding cuts assist in the sealing process. For this reason, you want a double sided, smooth blade. Not a serrated one. Serrations are only for multipurpose knives, and you should want them to be at the very bottom of the blade minimize their involvement with a stab.

A decent knife is a decent knife. If you've found one of the Chinese companies that keeps a consistent quality there's no reason not to throw them in the ring with their other counterparts. I'm on team Ganzo myself, though.

exacly. Chinks makes so much stuff that i cant remember their design that sticks around. Maybe vision fg or banter. But i bought twice good quality fakes from aliexpress, ad20,5 and les george vecp3 and wow, good iconic design is like 90% of what u think about knife, steel and build quality is maybe 10%. Fakes made me want og stuff if its in my price range even more. If i really want something to beat for cheap i would rather go for fake than orginal civici or kizer design. If i want something with good steel i will pay bit more for something like spyderco or fox knives (terzuola orginal gangstar is in my mind for ages)

>>65113602
too big and bulky to carry around in pocket, dont have sheets because bought it used (and it was probably stolen item). But its tough, jaws have good heat treatment, ther are precise enough even for smaller stuff, dont use blades at all but other tools come in handy. They can do some serious work, i even pried with flat screwdrivers more than once. There is bit of play on pliers jaws. Keep in mind that this is 5-6y old, cant speek about quality of todays leatherman. For edc go with wave or new fancy ones. But i would choose victorinox spirit mx for edc. If u need something cheaper chinks make lots of stuff like daicamping ect

bug is good, but dont expect the steel to be anything great. i have to sharpen it all the time. no clue why it's $35 now, see if it goes on sale, pretty sure mine was $15.

victorinox is a good alternative and their (tm) stainless is probably better than whatever MoV steel spyderco is using. but the bug is probably smaller and easier to open.

Like the Tenacious?
I have both a manix 2 and a tenacious and they're both good knives. If you want better steel options than go with the US knives. They are a lot more expensive but the steel is a noticeable performance upgrade. Also with the chinese knives the serrations on the thumb area aren't as sharp as the US ones. Not a huge deal but that's one thing that is straight up not as good.
>>
>>65118467
I'd avoid the Tenacious if that's what you're looking at. It's not a great design and the quality is not good. I've never been impressed by Spyderco in those aspects in general though.

Self-Defense? Obviously the best knife is the cheap one, you can carry it anywhere without caring about losing it, if the pigs come by you can chuck it without needing to go back and pick it up.
My daily is an $11 Gerber flip knife I bought second hand, never needed it for a stabbing so far and it still cuts through whatever I need it to just fine.

The best blade shape is one that a jury will look at and say "That looks like a normal and reasonable knife that a normal person would have."
If you have some tacticool shit, you might get some overzealous liberal prosecutor try to destroy your life, or maybe the guy who broke in that you gutted was some rich faggot's kid and they want to make you miserable.
If you have some tacticool or pointy fantasy bullshit knife, you're going to have to spend a lot more money on your lawyer (And if you don't have that extra money, have fun going to jail)
The best knife for self defense is a normal utilitarian knife, or a kitchen knife. Something a juror will look at and say "I have one of those, that's normal".

Chinese knife companies are reddit. They are made with communist slave labor. They all have names that aren't real words and look like girl knives and are advertised to knoobs.
Cold Steel are ugly like Chevies but seem to be tough. CRKT is similar with a little step up in class, used by Army grunts. Gerber is maybe a step down from those two. They used to be good but are now owned by Fiskars scissor company. Their Strongarm / Prodigy seem to be solid.
The best knives are USA made from companies you've already heard of. Buck, Spyderco, Benchmade, Pro-Tech, Microtech, Ka-Bar.
You've got your old reliable European Victorinox and Morakniv.
The best stuff comes from western countries where they make it at home.
The most insufferable cult followings are Cold Steel and Mora fags bragging about how poor they are.
Some people hate Spyderco because they look funny to them and don't know Spyderco designs in the dark for the blind, for the hand and not the eye.
You've got your high end companies like Chris Reeve and Spartan. Spartan seems to be faking being Chris Reeve until they make it. Some people say they don't come sharp like boomer $1000 Randall grails.
You generally get what you pay for with diminishing returns as you go up in price. Moras are THE cheap, good knife.
People who like to be poorer than Cold Steel and Mora fags love their Milwaukee knives and how they are the only knife you will ever need.

Cold steel has the best folding locks, better than $1k+ knives in every scenario. CRKT is definitely not on par, at least on their popular m16 series the liner lock is super thin metal, it doesn't even look like a hardened steel, but I can't prove it. You're paying $100 for a folder that looks cool but has the same materials as a $40 cold steel. None of these other brands compare in terms of hard use to value in cold steel until you creep into the $500 range. JoeX on Youtube has really good demos.

I have it and love it. I carry it every day. It fits my pocket perfectly and it really is devastating if you slash with it.
The point will push inside a 6 pound beef roast like paper bag.

You do need the after market blade opener attachment though.

I buy this knife as a gift for my male friends. No homo. They never shut up about it.

And when a woman has a little clothing tag she needs cut off, I scare the holy shit out of her. FIRST, I ask if she wants me to cut it off, then a flick open the knife and cut it off in less than a second. Plenty of time for the tag to hit the floor just as has panties soak to overflowing and her slickness hits the title. It’s so cute hearing them frantically apologize as they wipe themselves off of my shoes. Their voices are all extra girly because of the instant hormone shift. If a woman sees your knife in your hand while she is ovulating, you have a 50/50 chance of her giving you cowgirl style, but it will ALWAYS end in Doggy style, because the craving will be depth. If you pull out, she’ll will scream in rage and you’ll probably end up in a DV. Never show it to a girl if her sister is there, because they get very competitive, and load one is never as big as load two, so they fight about fairness. These are things they don’t tell you when you buy Cold Steel. And honestly, fuck the long-nose tribe and their Leftist whore, but there is a part of me that feels Cold Steel should have a waiting period before you can purchase.

Anyway, great knife.

surprisingly pocketable. I was looking at a Cold Stee Frenzy, and a Talon 2 Serrated as well.
But I am really holding out for a knife in MagnaMax, preferably a PM2 or a Manix 2.
Everyone is buying the 15v Spyderco's, but I'm going to pass. MagnaMax is suppose to be like a stainless K390, or a stronger S110V.
Which if it has a 15% performance loss on the edge retention, for stronger and stainless attributes, I personally think its better than 15v for the trade offs.

>>
>>65123225
Onkata is the official Spyderco store on Amazon. (They are an authorized dealer.) The problem you get is when people buy one and then return a fake and then it gets sold to you. Amazon was supposed to stop that practice by the end of March this year.
Spyderco has an agreement with their authorized dealers not to sell below 75% of MSRP, that's why it's $201 on Spyderco's site and $150.75 from bladehq.
Onkata gets around it by not showing you the price until it's in your shopping cart or something.
The Manix is an Eric design and his favorite. SPY27 is Spyderco's proprietary steel.

Looking for a US M7 bayonet to fit onto my m16 clone, are any of the new productions good? Ive seen new ones made by B.O.C., Ontario, Imperial, Milpar, Conetta, and Gen-Cut. Any of these decent or should I look for for some original Mil surplus?
>>
>>65123557
They're an authorized dealer. You should be good.
>>
>>65123557
I presume what actually happens is that they are buying real knives from manufacturers, like they should. but a customer orders a knife then they return a fake one and pocket the difference.
Amazon has shit quality control for returns. then the next person that orders that knife gets sent out the fake one, and the cycle of scamming continues. so when you get it, just make sure it looks like a real Spyderco product. I'm 99% sure it will be.
>>
Can any of you help me out? My girlfriend said she wanted a dagger as a joke, but honestly, I think it would be a fun gift to give her a real one. Are there any good places to buy online something like that? Not some mall-ninja shit, but like from a real knife maker, on etsy or something? I appreciate any help
>>
>>65123954
Id say a Cold Steel Counter Tac is probably the cheapest "real" dagger you can get. there are more expensive daggers, like a Cold Steel Tai-pan or a Boker Applegate. but if its a gift for a woman, id just say the Counter Tac is good enough. Tai-pan and Applegate's are really nice, but would she actually appreciate something like that, probably not.

This one is pretty sick as well. AUS-10 steel. 5.5 inch blade. for 90 bucks. I dont know your limit. but 50 for the Countertac. 90 Filoso, 170 for the tai pan, and 300 for the Applegate.
End of the day I think the Tai-pan is the coolest and nicest for the price. that Filoso is a step up from the countertac, but the countertac the bare minimum i would go for at least.

My new obsession. I can't get it out of my head. I will buy this as my greatest sword, one sword to rule them all! (All I wanted was the Cold Steel version for a couple hun...). But, I've spent a couple hun on fucking pocket knives, so we.
>>
>>65116151
they had these at a previous company i use to work for. i was so tempted to buy it but never pulled the trigger because i always carry a pocket knife anyways.
but its an underrated design. its a lock back, and if you have medium size hands you could definitely put that ring around the pinky and get a 4 finger grip on one if you really needed to.
other thing was the steel was shitty 3cr. but i think about it from time to time.
might be worth the consideration.

hello, I need a general purpose knife (mainly for opening boxes, cutting straps) but one that would be usable in -40° (so, with heavy gloves). I'll be helping with construction in the arctic.

any suggestion? thank
>>
>>65127937
mora
>>
>>65127937
Mora's probably the easy option. Gerber Strongarm probably, maybe a Cold Steel SRK-C alternatively if you need something thicker. There's issues with heavy gloves with basically anything that ain't a fixed, but coupled with arctic temps and most oils / lubes will laugh at any attempt to open.

Depends on how often you lose it, too....
>>
>>65127978
>mora
this $13 safety one looks good; I won't care too much if I lose it / break it.
>>
>>65127994
Yep. The sheathe is important because at that temperature shit gets retarded, the mora just slides in and out no leather no clasps and it's not too form fitting. No exposed metal on the handle anywhere so if you do have to use it without gloves you're ok. Get it in orange and you'll really struggle to lose it.
>>
>>65128000
yeah.
I'm excited guys, it'll be my first time in Greenland
>>
>>65127994
You’ll want one with a tip. The updated models Risber/Amberg have more of a belt loop drop that will get it below a jacket. If your work pants have a good pocket for the knife sheath, then sew a button just above it to clip the sheath onto. All folding knives suck with insulated gloves.

At this point I feel we're just paying more for the Benchod Made or Spydreco and MADE IN USA stamp. My Para Military 2 just came in and I am kinda disappoint for a fucking $175 knife. The grip feels cheaper than the G10 grips from my chicom knives. The blade feels very premium but the grips just feels super fucking cheap. And as you can see its not even as centered as my Civivi.

Step 1. Buy a Spyderco Manix 2 in a supersteel for 200ish bucks
Step 2. order after market Titanium scales from AWT or Original Goat or another company that offers them. 100 ish bucks.
put 2 and 2 together and now you have a 300 dollar titanium scaled supersteel knife with a locking mechanism that is more reliable than titanium frame locks

Im being edgy and giving a hot take about how i think Chris Reeves knives are overrated and how people are sheep and dont think for themselves. because if you want a high end titanium folding knife then you can do it yourself for 300 dollars. while if you utilize the ball bearing lock from the Manix 2 knife, then its a better knife lock, that will be stronger and more reliable than a Sebenza.
>>
>>65120252
When you can get the Balaur Arms Kriegsmesser for $500+, no pocket knife is worth $300. Hot take that shit.

hot take i own guns and collect knives because i think they are more fun because you can actually use them everyday.
so im fine with spending 300 dollar on a knife knowing its actually peak design and would only buy a sword as something to hang on the wall.

I agree, I was oneshot by the design. It is a very nice knife, but only a retard (me) would spend that much on a pocket knife. I think that any knife with a finger choil (not finger groove) belongs in the trash. The success of Spyderco shows i’m in the minority.

i just have genuine hatred for CR knives. its clear to me that he undermines buck knives. he sells hollow grind 500 dollar hunting knives, but the only people that buy them are redditors for EDC.
I guess there is just some deep seeded hatred how there the current general consensus is that buck knives = bad. but 500 dollar hunting knife you will use for box opening = good.
which is funny, because now buck has a more "modern" lockback design. using a thinner profile, magnacut steel, and a pocket clip for 200 bucks using brass and ebony wood materials in the handle. not as premium as titanium, but its like ok, where is your god now? what is chris reeves going to do next?
>>
>>65129608

>>
>>65129055
I mean, yeah. I think the point is more they can produce a like five foot long sword with a forged blade, distal taper, zero secondary bevel convex, wood handle, steel fittings, and it costs less than some pocket knives.

Just like there are guns that are cheaper than mass produced non-handmade knives. That's absurd from a cost-benefit standpoint.

What do you guys think of the Mini Adira and do these ever go on sale? Does Benchmade even do Black Fridays?
>>
>>65132981
It's a cool looking knife with the orange accents. It reminds me of Dua Lipa's red hair in the Houdini music video; they both came out around the same time.
The Adira isn't in the same league as the Spyderco Salt series; if you get salt water in it and don't rinse it out, the internals will rust. They are just regular stainless steel and not something ultra corrosion resistant. So, it's more of a freshwater knife.
>>

What the fuck is this zoomer shit?

Not gonna be swimming with the knife so I'm good, and even if it gets rusted Benchmade would make it right. I also appreciate that every Shotshow if you happen to drop by their booth they would sharpen your knife for free.

It also helps that I can list a Bugout for like 10% off MSRP in the Bladeforums and sell it within minutes while my Spydreco takes weeks at more than half off MSRP.
