My process was:

The entire reason the VA disability system exists is because real jobs in the 1900s still gave workers comp and benefits to their employees meanwhile the US government gave nothing.
The VA disability system in practice is worker's compensation.
Disability money is not given out freely, you have to have proof and a paper trail of an actual condition or injury that persists after your service.
Thus, "disabled" veterans (in theory) only get what is owed to them rightfully.

Across the board, disabled vets don't want to get paid for conditions. They would rather not have their conditions. But they got hurt in their service so they deserve compensation at the least.

If VA didn't exist, the government would be getting sued millions of dollars for casualties by veterans and their families instead. $3k a month to a handful of servicemen who deserve it actually is a good economical compromise.

All of those are possible options, but the only way I know of to have everything paid for is to do the traditional route. You can, I have been told, only do the scholarship for a few years of medical school but I do not believe it pays for the years you already did before joining the program, however your service obligation will be less. Up to you whether you'd like to have debt hanging over your head while making a military doctor's salary. I don't know if you can have it done retroactively, worth talking to a medical recruiter about it.

Traditional route (4 year scholarship):

Clearance only wants to know that you aren't a spy or a liar. They are *very* good at spotting lies, my agent caught me in some stupid lie and asked me why I lied, I told him I was just stressed about the interview and he respected that answer enough to move on. I got my clearance, so it's not the end of the world if you don't give perfect answers. Nah. Not important. That's so long ago you have plausible deniability if somehow it's discovered (you didn't remember). And the military doesn't tend to go LOOKING for reasons to DISQUALIFY you from serving, beyond basic things like are you an enemy spy.

The part I was afraid of was I smoked weed in Sophmore year and I was afraid of putting my friends in the position of having to lie to the FBI during my personal reference check for security clearnace, so I came clean about it at MEPS when "Levenworth" got mentioned.

There was no reason to be worried about that. I've since been interviewed by the FBI myself for a friends security clearance and it's more address verification than anything. They do ask about things like why you were friends, but they don't openly ask about criminal history, so as long as you don't offer up information like, "yeah, we used to put fire crackers in mailboxes", it's nothing major.

Let me tell you guys asking about bonuses and shamming right now why to apply to special operations as either support or beyond.

I started my career in 2/327inf, the 101derful airborne division as an 11b. It sucked massive cock desu. Like looking back it was a good place to be, fuck half the people transferring in looked worse than guys we had for less than a year. However, get ready for 1000 hours of fucking bullshit per 20 mins of good shit. At least you'll be in shape.

The best thing I did was as a PFC I got out to some local ranges and met 2 retired GBs, along with other enthusiasts, but yea that community set me up way more than my mom or dad in the chain of command could ever do. "EIB, next you'll be a CPL or SGT and we'll send you to FRIES/SPIES" and maybe youll be a twice divorced SFC with two different pit mommies to pay out to one day kid...

Training in my off time just for marksmanship paid dividends. These old heads would show up just to see me do halfway decent, then laugh at me and chant "slipknot" when I wasnt so hot at unconventional shooting positions and gassed out, or whatever they came up with.
If you never join, think its zog gay shit, theres a lot to be learned just doing that.

In my own fucked up mind, I decided the solution to all my problems as a PFC in the infantry was to join EOD. It was a good move...I still remember my first day of training with them calling the first SSG in front of me a "squad leader" and next thing I know everyone around me is heckling me about it like an idiot. It was big boy rules and I loved my time in EOD but its a bit 50/50.

Competency baseline is way higher than infantry, even PT scores were higher. But the mission itself depended where you were assigned and who you supported. If anything, it taught me the piece of the puzzle where - no one will actually make you do PT each day to a high standard, and certainly no one will make you volunteer for hard shit. If you fail, it punishes you more than ever. Doing anything worthwhile is up to you.

I guess Im at the word limit, so Ill wrap it up and put this last bit as a reply. I ended up going to SFAS after about 5 1/2y TiS and paying my dues. I had a mediocre career as an 18e at 5th group, which btw I spent my entire time outside of training at Ft Campbell based solely on requests. You cant beat the Nashville hoes. God bless.

All I really wanted to say between this is - its so simple a PFC could grasp it. Go all the way. None of this is about fighting the good fight anymore. What will compel you forward is the electric, lightning in a bottle people people who you serve alongside every day. You couldnt pay me enough dollars to deal with military bullshit ever again. But I'd waive everything to be around quality people every day once more.

If you're all fucked up...selection does look at how you've prepared. Its public info. Dont be that guy who throws away a bonus just because the airborne or SF/ranger recruiters show up to OSUT/basic. If you arent ready, take it to heart enough to get better. If im being honest, Im pretty sure I wouldnt have passed RASP or SFAS right out of OSUT. You know the one guy who I talked to who for sure graduated RASP and had a successful day 1 career in 75th? He was a bear hunting guide in Alaska beforehand. And of course I heard about others but hes the only one who was funny enough to call from time to time after OSUT, If you're starting off way lower than that, throw it all into a lesser gauntlet, take the bag, and come back with more fire.

Don't get hazed into the barracks, get outside and kill it. Its remarkable what you can actually do if you refuse to quit. Going beyond the adolescent idea of pain and exhaustion, often times finishing in a haze, welcomed by friends.

If im going to shoot for pleasure on a flat range, I very much prefer the 92fs and m9a4 I have. The 1911 i have rarely actually gets shot or carried in all reality. Did 9 as an 11b and my knees/hips/back (and shoulders but meh, played a lot of sports that contributed to that) are absolutely and utterly fucked. My CAF medical screening is coming up next week. I scored above CAF average in the fitness test, live clean and healthy, but had a history of boozing hard a couple of years ago. Self-admitted to an 8-week rehab, sober since.

Read through that list. That's what you have available to choose from *if they have a slot.*

Keep in mind, you're still going to have to pass a bunch of health and background checks at MEPS. You might not get it even if there are slots.

For people who qualify PPWS while enlisted, there are MANY job postings on LinkedIn alone for SRO/similar management day 1 out of the Navy. What makes having a background as a Navy Nuke alluring to employers isn't the narrow scoped literal knowledge gained being a Nuke, in fact, civillian nuclear power plants and Naval Nuclear Power plants are EXTREMELY different. A plant in Texas/PA isn't doing power transients the way a Aircraft Carrier or Submarine does. What employers are after are 1. troubleshooting ability 2. managerial experience 3. quick learning/uptake, all of which the pipeline and fleet prepare you for.

DFAC food is whatever and hit or miss, given that you'll be at the hospital for 90% of your career you'll get hospital food which may or may not entitle you to BAS (food allowance). With that said 68P is a relatively difficult contract to come by? But then again maybe recruitment numbers are down.

516 MCAT, 3.89 overall GPA 3.79 science GPA. 400 volunteer hours, worked in hospice for about a year and as a scribe for a few months. Got in during my 2nd application cycle.

As far as med school admissions, I only got the one acceptance.

As far as the HPSP program goes, it doesn't help you get into school at all. The onus is on you to get in. Once you get in, you are almost guaranteed the scholarship barring a medical or criminal disqualification.

There is also the USUHS option for military medicine. In that route, you are on active duty during medical school and must adhere to active duty appearance etc. You get paid more during school too, but you incur a much longer service obligation. It's still a medical school and is tough to get into.

My records didn't list any massive fuckups on my part, so the recruiter figured it was either a clerical error or a weird Space Force thing and sent a waiver request in, which was approved in less than 24 hours. Sweet.
Next step is getting disqualified at MEPS, which could be as early as next week.
