>Bell has put forward a new concept for a next-generation tiltrotor aircraft armed with anti-ship cruise missiles and other munitions for the U.S. Marine Corps. The design is based on what has been newly named the MV-75A Cheyenne II, which is in development for the U.S. Army. This comes as the Corps has said “everything is on the table” as it starts to formulate a new vision for what will succeed its AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom helicopters.https://www.twz.com/air/new-cruise-missile-armed-mv-75-tiltrotor-concept-for-the-marines-shown-offI don’t know but something about big missile just inches from big bladed tiltrotor make me feel uneasy! What do you think /k/ ?
Making a gunship version to escort transports makes a lot of sense, using some as longer range ASW / Anti-Ship carrier based platforms also makes sense.Giving them huge cruise missiles doesn't make sense, this is another case of the Marines trying to pretend they aren't part of the Navy and wanting to double up on capabilites offered by other Navy assets.
>>65119099Clearance is clearance, be it an inch or a mile.
>>65119099the four missile tubes being right up to the exhaust of that cruise missile is worse you know
>>65119099Why not just make a dedicated attack helicopter platform instead of this piss poor excuse of an attempt at "hybridization"
>>65120862Because trying to escort tilt rotor transports with rotor wing attack choppers doesn't work, the choppers get left in the dust. The real question is why put a cruise missile on them.
>>65120865Because Hegseth really likes cruise missile because they are phallic and trad.
>>65119099an MV-75 would make a killer ASW platform, and giving it armaments capable of attacking surfaced submarines or other *light* ships is a great idea, Hellfire missiles (or JAGMs) would do an excellent job at taking down autonomous (or not) explosive vessels from much longer ranges. It would do okay at lobbing anti ship missiles but it wouldnt excel at it, just like helicopters. A cruise missile benefits from both height and speed when it is launched, this is something neither helicopters nor tilt rotors can reasonably provide. Lobbing AShMs should just be left to carrier jets.
>>65120992If they can maintain a hover long enough for dipping sonar they would be the best ASW platform by a mile.
>>65121013>If they can maintain a hover long enoughI doubt it would have any real difficulty at all, it probably is just less efficient while hovering, but can still remain aloft for more than enough time to really take advantage of dipping sonar and shit. I would put a MAD on the very back too just because I think it would look cool.
