>a single shot of 40mm airburst round is enough to obliterate myriads of drone swarms
Are drones genuinely overrated? Why aren't the western militaries employing the same tactics?

where?
let's try this in real life, anon
also somebody post the life cycle of drones being invented by germans just to be shot down by germans

Only one 500 dollar drone has to make it

South Korea is developing an unmanned turret with a twin barrel 40mm mounted on it. Each battery consists of 4 turrets with an AESA radar for target acquisition. K21 is already capable of shooting down Shahed-tier drones without any upgrade.

drones can NOT strike you without your consent. simply inform the drone you do not consent to their actions and they are powerless to stop you.

How much drone does it need to kill for it to worth its own cost?
This is the basic cost of attrition warfare.

Is a 40mm shell worth more than your life? The Bofors 3P ammo runs ~$5k per shot making it worth less than a month of my output.

They cost way more than that. The days of 200 dollar temu drones with offensive hand grenades as their only payload and an 8 minute loiter time were years ago now

There are now ground drones too. You're getting swarmed on land, sea and air. They're gonna invent burrowing drones too. So, add underground. So you shoot a few drones? Boo hoo. I'm sure the drone wife and drone children will cry and press F at the drone military funeral. YOU DUMB DENSE MOTHERFUCKER SMOOTH BRAINED CHIMP. Don't you get it? The calculus has changed. If you deploy manned assets vs drones, the risk to you is much higher. Risk in terms of human life and in terms of money used to bring up that human to 18 years old and train him for war. Drones have made war low cost. To wage war against drones, you must deploy similar unmanned drones. The age of manned warfare is coming to a close.

>The price of life
Will reduce rapidly in a wartime economy when food and job supply is reduced and controlled.
>5k usd programmable autocannon shell
Not guided and will miss if the target can accelerate instead of keeping a constant velocity.
Costs comparable to an interceptor drone with a way heavier and more expensive launcher, turret and vehicle only available in the heaviest formation an army can field. The rest are lucky to sitting in vehicles that can barely be called armored or armed.

>You need enough to cover the entire battlefront

>will miss if the target can accelerate instead of keeping a constant velocity
The Bofors has a muzzle velocity of ~1km/s meaning ~2 seconds time of flight to 2km. A 10 inch drone weighed down by a warhead and maybe a fibre spool isn't a racing drone and so long as it's controlled by humans can't reacts fast to incoming fire.

I agree that when drones are fully autonomous they will get erratic terminal guidance to make interception as hard as possible but today air burst AAA works well.
Is there anything in current service you would choose over AAA to defend an airfield from a Spiderweb attack?
>>
>>65121020
APKWS
Unfortunately as far as I can find the only land based system in service only has four and is intended for vehicle mounts, but there isn't any reason you couldn't have bases defended by multiple 19 tube pods or make larger clean sheet launchers.

Drones are cheap to produce, easy to transport and are a fucking bitch to take down. While the hardware is perfectly capable of shooting them down it's not economic at all. Anti-air is expensive as shit to maintain and restock.
>>
>>65121070
SPAAGS aren't expensive it's just the west really didn't focus on them for a long time because missiles are more effective against high end targets and the east is incompetent.
>>
>>65119982
desperate for sales are we?
>>
>>65120774
They do cost more, but "way more" is debatable. 1k, which is probably closer to real world cost right now in Ukraine, is 5 times your claim of 200, but in military terms the price difference is neglible
>>
>>65119982
What if the drones spread out?
>>
>>65119982
It's more the fact that most defenses are configured for one or two really expensive targets not one or two hundred really cheap targets. Drones have mostly made a name for themselves for hitting where air defenses are weak, covered only by long range SAMs.
>>
What happens when China decides they dont want to sell drone parts to Western countries anymore? Ours wont be so cheap and we wont be able to produce every part
>>
>>65121236
The amount of money and work hours needed to turn drones into battlefield capable make it much more than $1k. The cheapest Shasneed copy, the new American one, is about $30k per unit. As for people talking about 'drone swarms' they're fucking retarded. Over the counter drones cannot do 'swarms' because of bandwidth crowding. In Ukraine, each AO has about six guys on each side, because any more and your drones fuck with each other over the limited bandwidth or run into jammed ranges and become useless. For every single 'hit' of a drone, there are dozens that don't do shit. This idea (perpetuated by idiots like Musk) of 10,000 drones flying with 30kg warheads is not feasible. It's possible, but it requires each drone to be self-transmitting and self-connecting. So that means if one member of the swarm loses control from the operator, it will connect to another member in the swarm and follow that command. This costs a lot of money and is technically more difficult, which is why it costs and is not really a thing atm because for one-use weapons, it isn't really worth it when you can use the $5m it'd take to make a swarm of 10 drones and put that $5m to a missile or two. Sam logic as why railguns aren't standard - a missile does it better and cheaper currently.

People (again, like Musk) showing videos of 'mass drone swarms' ignore that 1. Those are parade drones that places like China use for New Years Eve for their meme displays, 2. They are designed for parades, not for carrying heavy warheads 10km into the grey zone and 3. The videos where they fail are never posted (2024 or 2025 there was one where the practice failed and thousands of drones rained to the ground, of course Musk doesn't post that),

So, this idea that you can get 10,000 Alibaba drones, slap a frag grenade to them and you can take out an aircraft carrier is just nonsense. Even mass drone attacks like Spider Web resulted in two trucks exploding before they got to the target.

What happens when other countries decide they don't want to sell raw materials or food to China any more? There are advantages and disadvantages at being a major trade power and in the Top 10 GDP* in the world and one of those is if you start to fuck with the supply chain, people can fuck with you back. So unless China is sorting out their food production and raw resources (while also keeping their manufacturing centres intact while Vietnam and India etc keep taking more and more of it) they would be unwise to fuck with other countries until then.
>>
>>65119982
Oh hey, Chinese have entered the 20th century

Currently merope drone(15k) is fielded against shaheads in single firing launcher manually. This will work on smaller drones but is obviously oversized for and out numbered by them.
Pic related would be more ideal for smaller drones.
Then there is also high power microwave. Currently only contracts is announced. Not sure of their effectiveness on larger drones running on fuels and other stuff.
These hardkills are still too defensive minded and foot bounded as the attacker is not in any immediate danger doing shit like this so they can repeat again and again. To truly stop the attack, more proactive and mobile counters of normal patrolling, surveillance, and retaliation are needed to spot and kill the attacker way before and as soon as they make their moves so their would hesitate and think twice about doing this. Those fixed wing aircraft carrying fpv drones, if not used in offensive bombing runs and their engine life permits, should be flying in circles above friendly airports to intercept and counter attack enemy launchers and controllers.
>>
>>65121297
Anon.... Long range drones and FPV drones are 2 different beasts. You think slapping together a small FPV outside the MIC cost structure costs more than 1k? Do you think it takes more than 30 minutes to put it together? Even the more tricked out thermal imaging+optical cabling ones aren't that expensive. The thermal cam module is maybe 50-100 bucks and 15 klicks of cable maybe another $100. Explosives are and should be plenty and cost >$40

Uh, isn't commercial fiber optic cable usually between $1 and $10 per meter? Which would put the cost of 15km of fiber optic spool at $15,000 on the low end? You might get that down somewhat if you are buying it in bulk from China, but it is still going to cost you several thousand dollars at a bare minimum for the spool alone. Not to mention that 15km of fiber optic wire can easily weight 20kg on a drone that otherwise only needs to carry a few kg of explosives, so lugging that spool requires several times the weight limit of one that is unwired, and thus several times the cost in batteries compared to the cheapo wireless FPVs of yore. A cost estimate of $10k per drone is pretty reasonable, and lines up with current estimates of many current FPVs costing between $10k and $30k depending on capabilities.
>>
>>65121450
You're way off, but so was I. The first retailer that came up on google for unshielded fiber optic cable was $1100/15km spool. When you factor in buying in bulk and having a proficient purchaser I'd guess it'd be closer to $500. That'd mean your fancy ass FPV would still be sub ~1500

This shipping container is the Sensofusion Tactical Drone Factory, capable of manufacturing 50 drones a day.

>A fully self-contained drone manufacturing facility built inside a standard shipping container. Equipped with industrial 3D printers, an electronics assembly station, and a complete parts inventory, a single Drone Factory can produce approximately 50 interceptor drones per day. The factory can be operated by a small team and deployed anywhere in the world.

>Conventional defense manufacturing relies on large production runs and centralized warehousing. For most military hardware, this works. For drones, it does not. Drone technology evolves so rapidly that a design manufactured today may be tactically obsolete by the time it reaches the front line. Warehouses full of last quarter’s drones represent not just wasted capital, but a strategic vulnerability.

>Sensofusion’s answer is radical: don’t stockpile drones at all. Instead, stockpile the capability to build them.
