Soon HPM weapons will be everywhere which got me thinking about how to harden drones against them. For an FPV quad I think the motor is the real weak point. Even if you use foil/copper tape, ITO coated optics and fiber optics to build a Faraday cage those brushless motors would still act like a backdoor parasitic antennas for microwaves.
A mesh enclosure is too bulky and has gaps that high-frequency waves can slip through plus it ruins the aerodynamics. A better move would be to cage the motor specifically maybe using waveguide vents to block the HPM while still letting the air cool it down.

Just use thicker gauge wire

Isn't the idea of a Faraday cage that it absorbs the energy instead of passing it through to the electronics? And don't a lot of these anti-drone microwaves literally catch the drone on fire? Why would the cage last any longer if it isn't grounded?
>>
so why cant we just shoot these slow drones? are people just too retarded?

How are you getting signals to your drone to control it?
>Muh fibber opdicks
Defeats the point of the faraday cage then, retard. This board has gone to shit.

Humanity isn't evolved to strike down birds from the sky. We're built to hunt down larger, slower animals than that.

>Isn't the idea of a Faraday cage that it absorbs the energy instead of passing it through to the electronics
No they just pass it through the skin to ground. For microwaves it works more like a reflector.
>And don't a lot of these anti-drone microwaves literally catch the drone on fire? Why would the cage last any longer if it isn't grounded?
They aren't that powerfull really. It's enough to disrupt electronics but not enough to accidentally cook your own crew.

>muh radiowave
Electronic jamming already fucks that. If you insist then just use low frequency radio anntena with ram coating.

>>65121953
Just wrap the motors in tinfoil.
>>
I just want you all to know this is one of the stupidest goddamn threads I've seen in a long time.

It's extremely reductionist, yes.
>>
>>65121965
That adds more weight meaning you need either a smaller bomb or less range.
>>
nice DE beam... it would be a shame if fine particulates of any substance somehow got into the air column....
>>
>>65122032
The nice thing about faraday cages is that any solid piece of metal works as part of the cage, and drones get plenty of air flow. Just have pic rel protruding from the cage to solve all your cooling needs.

>Random heat sink slapped on the outside of the faraday cage
Wouldn't do anything for the motor. You need to connect the heat sink to the motor somehow
>Attach heat sink directly to the motor
Compromises the faraday cage. Heatsink bridges the air gap and now the entire faraday cage is an antenna for any incoming microwaves.
>Use electrically insulating but thermally conductive materials to connect the two
Smart, but expensive and possibly heavy.

just use stp

Warfare is just endless cope cages. Fuck man I’m getting old because this new shit is gay as fuck. It’s spineless as fuck. Drones are fucking dumb.

The Faraday cage is to stop the microwave melting your ICs, do you think it's a jammer?

Going to need this

The way I see it, the HPM vulnerability for a quadcopter drone is something like
>antennas
>control board
>motor power lines (if long)
>motor coils
Antennas are naturally most susceptible since they are designed to absorb radiation, induced currents in the control board could easily break the ICs. Motor leads and motors themselves are tougher since they are lower impedance and designed to handle high currents, so you would need a lot more energy to get voltages high enough to break down the coil insulation.

For counters, you would need a metallic/conductive shell with minimal holes or pass-throughs to cover the control board, if you must have an antenna instead of fiber optics you are out of luck. Motors cannot be realistically covered in a quadcopter because you would either ruin coil cooling or harm the airflow from the propellers.
>>65121968
An ideal faraday cage appears as a mirror to an EM wave, no energy is transferred inside the cage. In the real world, some of the energy is absorbed by the cage itself in eddy-currents, so a big enough pulse with a shitty enough cage would burn a hole in it from skin heating.
>>65122024
Not sure what you mean by 'low enough' frequency since any useful drone control radio will be in the microwave region, but RAM coating any antenna will practically ruin it.
