They are a mobile machine gun position that can quickly be in places you weren't expecting a machine gun position to be. Theyre not really supposed to get shot, and dont last long against armor or entrenched positions, but that's not the point.

Technicals aren't some sleight of military genius, they're an inevitability in desert combat. Their importance comes entirely from the fact that the amount of technicals you have is equivalent to the amount of troops you can move. The advantage over a truck is that you can actually fight in encounters and do hit-and-run attacks without having to disembark and haul the gun out of the truck bed first.
