What arms, armours, strategies and tactics would you spitball as ideal for use by a species of flying, projectile breathing oversized lizards?

how big, how fast we talking? reign of fire dragons?

i recall heat seeking sensors being able to track a lit cigarette so just spam those I guess, lots of SAM sites.

is what i remember.

again all dependent on what these dragons look like. if it's how to train your dragon tier regular boring ww2 era aa guns and 50 cals would probably do fine.

Okay…to give my little three second sloppy fart of a thread a smidge more actual structure and thought to it I’ll try laying out these dragons you are working with in some details since there are clearly some interested people here and the first responses were not just bitterly cussing me for being another fantasy OP on the weapons board.

They hatch at the size of a chameleon and start as intelligent as a dog. dragons grow to their typical max to be around the scale of the African Bush elephants by volume.

They age to that size over 130 years steadily annd intellect goes up over that time to match before reaching parity to a human. After that they’ll live for up to 600 henceafter. Females can brood clutches seasonally at age 60 and up with an average of 2-3 eggs a year.

They have metabolism of a reptile, crocodile let’s say and can do a torpor state.

Putting flight movement aside they have the proportional movement of large cats. Tigers or lions essentially what with cats being amongst the basic components along with snakes and birds of prey for what is conjectured a lot to have inspired the idea of dragons in the first place with arms and legs underneath the body instead of off to the sides like they would be on a lizard giving them catlike mannerisms and movements makes perfect sense. They have hand claws, worse than ours but still functional.

Rhino analagous plateing with a crocodilian scales in place of skin. Belly Scutes also like a croc.

The breath attack of an adult dragon is like a projectile stream of Crocodile flame throwing tank, similar ‘fuel’ reserve as well which takes a three weeks of secretions in the fuel bladder to resupply.
They are sociable enough to have communities as we would understand we them which do crafts and junk. Otherwise the original question would be a bit pointless since you can’t do arms and stratagies with feral monsters.

Fighting as a human from the back of a dragon or fighting as a human on the ground (vehicle) or in the air (aircrafts) against dragons?
The latter scenario is easy: missiles (wire/laser/radar guided), CIWS and other autocannons used for AA. The first is the more interesting, as a dragon rider has at best only two hands available to him in order to offend. This leaves us with your breath attack (which isn't much) or the option to mount some weapons on a dragon.

I know what you are, but it's okay I am too

With how you are describing the dragons I think any military and really any society for that matter that they create will by default end up as a gerontocracic hierarchy where intermittently older dragons at all levels of the chain of custody have to tard wrangle the streams of younger and dumber ones popping out of the adult dragons.

It really depends on the dragon's power level and relative level of technology. On one end you get a raw dragon, and on the other end they might as well shapeshift into something smaller and jump into a plane.
