Rather than using single use FPV drones at scale, cartels are making use of group 1 and group 2 sUAS. Group 1 is being used heavily to spoil ambushes set by other cartel groups and some of the larger ones are dropping primitive IEDs from decent altitudes with a minute of truck bed accuracy. The group 2 platforms are being used to move cargo across the US mexican border, mostly inside of tight valleys that work as natural waveguides to keep the RF signature of the drone constrained. These tactics result in very low attrition of platforms during cartel drone usage which is probably good considering they are paying out of their own pocket for all these platforms. YoY cartel drone strikes have been doubling each year since 2022 and while a large portion is concentrated in the south over routes, a large portion is moving closer and closer to the border where the terrain rewards UAS usage.

Usage of UAS to perform ISR and lighter strike missions is going to be a drastically more common occurrence in any sort of civil conflict CONUS. Survivability of platforms and the presence of existing platforms is going to be priority. Unlike ukraine or even the middle east, there is a much more difficult supplychain to get them landed in the US and a lack of conventional military explosives to make them lethal at scale. Now a blackswan type event will likely occur where FPVs are used to hit some sort of soft target and scare the shit out of people. Similarly to a gunfreezone you probably cant take your cUAS platform to the <large soft target>. Defense of these targets is based on line of sight measures of controls. UAS overcoming this is a whole new dimension.

11.5 is just a bit more dwell time but I think it matters less and less each year as people get better at tuning their ARs.
Genuinely 10.3-11.5 doesnt matter all that much and comes down to which rail you want.

Sounds like they went the way of Cloud Defensive. The used to sell my favorite picatinny aluminum pressure switch holder, but they were getting their clocks cleaned by $10 knockoffs on Temu. Now they want $60 for 2 pieces of polymer and 2 screws. Greedy fuckers. (although I think they still make some aluminum variant that's even more expensive). https://clouddefensive.com/products/lcs-mk2j-for-streamlight-switch-black

From firsthand testimony the aluminum ones were just more annoying to assemble due to being constrained by machine time/ops at a given pricepoint. The product could probably come back in 5 years when DMLS is more affordable but really the axon is fine for most people.

Okay. So you see those kinds of tactics you described playing a relevant role. But conflicts aren't static, right? Any form of conflict lasting longer than a single battle yet alone a single day will likely see countermeasures developed, homebrew defensive and offensive capability some big brain some brainlet.

In the tactics you described it is a peer on peer conflict, cartel on cartel, but they won't be operating in a vacuum. Federal and state influence would still be relevant, and harassing citizens with terroristic actions cannot effectively police any moderately armed region.

I suppose the question is what aspects do you think will flux in those Cartel drone scenarios? Would cartels even be the most relevant air dominance competitor? Because I imagine it would either be US/State air dominance or whatever country arrives to pick up the scraps. I don't see cartels doing much land grabbing because that would be entirely antithetical to how cartels make money. Really only the zetas kind of operate like that and only because they were explicitly a paramilitary arm of a former cartel organization that just took control.

How do you reconcile that? I am guessing you aren't navel gazing of hyper specific scenarios, so are you shrimply training for a cartel-tier enemy? Don't you live in Idaho, what kind of cartel presence even exists there?

Are the extra 4-5' (3.95' to 4.75', to be precise) of extra sight picture at the extreme left and right at 100 yards really going to make or break your ability to detect, identify, and engage targets at distance? Or are you willing to trade them for improved ergonomics and increased capability?

Those that came before already figured these things out for you the hard way. You have so many choices now. Don't shortchange yourself deliberately when your eye already goes to the central part of the sight picture anyway. Between eye relief and field of view however, you can have one or the other; there is no free lunch - do you practice enough for it to matter?

You're focusing way too much on the specifics and missing the broad picture. Cartel drone behaviors are an example of a much lower tech than ukraine/russia adversary using drones heavily. All the while they are in an unconventional conflict among groups that both lack state sponsorship or the political legitimacy of the people to govern. This paints a picture much closer to a US civil conflict than the heavy armor, glide bombs, SAMs and landmines featured in ukraine.
>Dude countermeasures would just exist!
Perhaps you could mail some of these to the ukranians or russians while youre at it. Im sure the cartels would pay top dollar too, go ahead and line those pockets. The cold hard truth is that they will be a feature of the battlefield from now forward and are easier to operate than an AR15 to the majority of the fighting age population. Starting to only think about them when the battle drum beats is way too late.

>the specifics and missing the broad picture
The broad picture is not a particularly controversial one: technology disseminates and keeping a finger on the pulse of modern tech is enough to get a rough view of the aforementioned picture. Any future domestic conflict will be far more determinant from individual conditions vs the broad concept of drones. That just isn't a productive place to focus discussions like this. It prevents us from moving past the basics. Let's do that, okay? >>65131738

I am confused. Did you think I even implied or suggested drones and drone warfare and modern tech like 4k 120 fps mega-FLIR? I did not. >>65131738
>All the while they are in an unconventional conflict among groups that both lack state sponsorship or the political legitimacy of the people to govern. This paints a picture much closer to a US civil conflict than the heavy armor, glide bombs, SAMs and landmines featured in ukraine.
I thought we moved past Ukraine and were discussing the details of a conflict here. There are conditions to every conflict that couldn't be predicted because they are moments in time and place. That's why the Russo-Ukraine war looks the way it does, because of material, technological, *and* cultural limitations.

I do not agree that the details are somehow less important than the broad picture, especially because I was entirely interested in the details and do not care for navel gazing. Yes drones and Mexicans exist, riveting stuff.

The fact that the completely incorrectly labels something that is more akin to exit pupil as being "eye relief" is just one of several issues with the graphic. The thing that is labeled "eye relief" is actually neither exit pupil nor eye relief, but is more akin to a diverging beam spot diameter assuming the rays themselves correspond to like a 1/e^2 intensity contour or something which itself would be a bit of a weird mixture of ray optics representation of E&M radiation and genuine Maxwell's Equations wave solutions.

The graphic's most heinous mistake in my opinion in sweeping under the rug ALL the other optical system parameters and variables which set the performance and characteristics of the combined lens system. Like yes is FOV related to exit pupil? But so are magnification and lens diameter...

The graphic is just nonphysical as it is shown.

Strongly suggest trying non-steel case ammo without changing anything else and recording ejection pattern and cyclic rate. Steel case might not be a culprit but it is a variable that makes it difficult to ascertain any issues that particular rifle might be having, as steel case tends to require more extraction force and you're describing something like short stroking. But it could just as easily be overgassed showing symptoms of undergassing with a marred chamber grabbing ass.
>>
Finally shot my AR outside of 100 yards.
Set up a 10” steel plate at 300 yards.
My eyes were opened up to some things.
First of all, prone was impossible because the grass obstructed the target.
Secondly, it was essentially impossible to hit the target without some kind of rest.
Is there a doctrine I can follow if I have to engage targets at that range?
It’s not even THAT far, but basically I realized It would be way more difficult to make meaningful hits in a long range firefight than I assumed.
Now, I took some standing and kneeling shots but never actually hit the steel from these positions but I’m pretty sure I got close. I guess that suppressing fire and possibility of hitting the target would actually mean something in a real shoot.
I ended up stacking 2 ranged bags and using that as a rest from a sitting position and that’s where I was finally able to make some hits; at one point very consistently.
T. Using a dot and 3x magnifier

I rattlecanned my rifles for the first time today. However I left the slings on when I did it and didn't think much of it. Now my slings are all dry and crusty and not flexible at all. Is there a way to clean them so I can get the paint out of them, don't give a fuck about the color but the reduced flexibility sucks. Slings are made of Cordura webbing if that matters.

$1000 a year is pretty fucking ridículos especially for my level of free time. Plus it's too far anyway even if I did have free time. Talon range offers plenty of room for activities and only closes at 9. Even when it's busy there's plenty of space and a solid 400 yard range iirc + I don't have to be bothered by anyone. Call ahead, pull up to my lane, never waste time with anyone else.

Whittington Center was dozens if not hundreds of acres with an annual family membership of $75/year or $50 for individuals for access to the range 24/7 save for Christmas with so many ranges and space there is always an entire ass empty range to do your cool guy drills.

$1000/year for *access* to a range is a waste of money for me

Don't get discouraged. Improvement relies on two categories, technique:
>trigger press imparting no motion into the gun
>shooting position/foundation to reduce wobble
>breathing: taking the shot in your natural respiratory pause
and equipment:
>Rifle and ammo capable of 3 MOA accuracy (based on 10" @300y)
>Lowering dot brightness and understanding it's blocking ~2/3 of your target, even more if bright
>using bags & a proper rest to make sure your gun is even zeroed properly and you're even capable of making those hits

It's not easy, but you just need to suck less.

it will always be a simple Modbutton Lite. Hotbutton/axon isn't bad but can impede battery swaps on LAMs if you put it too close (I know we're talking WMLs but still). Not a huge deal if you don't mind needing a tool to swap LAM battery but couldn't be me. Plus the angle of the press on angled switches is actually less ergonomic. The Hot Button is built like a tank I will admit - I've seen guys run them as indexers/handstops and while the placement for activation was questionable, the switch holds up great. Granted I have had several modbutton lites and also never had an issue with them whether it's the wiring/plug/button activation, or the body itself deteriorating.

>What unique American geographic, cultural, and human conditions might be exploited by any one group
America has very little in the way of hard structures most things are very flammable. Firefighting as a whole is only possible in an organized society at a small scale. Combine this with relatively high amounts of high speed mobility due to car culture and suburbs and youre probably going to see rapid mobs rolling through an area and burning out anyone who doesnt agree with them. ZA farm murders but less isolated and a much faster "judgement". These people could easily use AI to crunch leaked databases to build a targeting list to night of long knives their political adversaries with very little in the way of manpower or equipment. No amount of speed reloads, multicam or gucci rifle really going to work in your favor.
T B H - Id rather see people go buy the surplus spike strips they offering on botach and more fire extinguishers before wasting money on $200 of tapeswitches.
>>65134853
Nah being able to keep the rifle on target, click it to constant to hit a PTT and then come back to it is clutch. That and people suck at jamming down momentary switches during strings of fire or in an awkward stance. Id much rather they overdrive the light to constant than underdrive it and lose their SA.

A few disparate thoughts here with many diverse threads that are really interesting. I'm going to try and explore them.
>America has very little in the way of hard structures most things are very flammable. Firefighting as a whole is only possible in an organized society at a small scale
The first sentence it depends. You live in Idaho, right? I imagine plenty of the structures there are new and therefore using wood vs places in America with way older settlement tending to have more concrete and brick than most people associate with American housing.

Elaborate on the second sentence because I think I incorrectly interpreted this as without centralized State and Federal government firefighting would fall apart. If so I heavily disagree, but I think it's just kind of a non-statement, maybe? You were just saying firefighting is limited by things like truck range, communication? Which yeah.
>Combine this with relatively high amounts of high speed mobility due to car culture and suburbs and youre probably going to see rapid mobs rolling through an area and burning out anyone who doesnt agree with them.
But doesn't all that "mobility" rely on the integrity and safety of our roads? Any scenario with the kinds of *ORGANIZED* militias doing Mad Max like you described only works with maintained roads, Americans have largely become consumers, most American drivers are not as proefficient at maintaining their car as you, and you maybe forgot how far from the norm you are.

Finally the biggest issue I have with this entire concept is what exactly *spurring* this organization? People don't just clump together like wet sand, a mob mentality only happens when a mob forms, and most people prefer not to be in mobs.

One of the many consistent criticisms of the American populace across all political positions is Americans are complacent. We are comfortable. There is nothing physically stopping people from organizing *right now.* And yet...

>hit a PTT and then come back to it is clutch
If you think you need a constant on switch for this you did not think it through. Is the point is that you're holding light on a target that you can't afford to lose illum on, but can afford to take a hand off your gun for? You can see how this makes no sense right? If I find myself in this 0.0043% chance of a situation and need to go constant, I can roll over to the DS00 switch in less than a second. It will take perp/target's eyes wayy longer to adjust after getting blasted with 500-1k lumens. Used in conjunction with verbal commands to control perp (fingers interlaced behind head, legs crossed etc) a half second of dark (basically equal to a light cutting out momentarily, thanks SF) is a non-issue.

Constant can create way more problems than it solves and I've never had an issue failing to hold solid momentary on shot strings, that's a pistol problem like I said. Struggling with that on a rifle is either a training issue or ergonomics (probably because the switch is ramped or offset at 9 o'clock, who'd have guessed lol)

>Id rather see people go buy the surplus spike strips they offering on botach and more fire extinguishers before wasting money
agreed 100%, might check out botach bc that's awesome and hilarious

Who is doing this? There is so much infrastructure in place to turn big ass engines running datacenters into custom chatgipity answering your questions on your Altoid Arduino.

Again, realistically we're talking about situations where the federal government loses control right? There are only so many scenarios that would cause that, most of them apocalyptic or against forces far larger than muh New Cascadian Army or whatever.

The best examples of muh Boogaloo are shit like the Colorado Coalfield War, the Battle of Liberty Place, the Battle of Blair Mountain.

If you removed the Federal government from the equation, other nations WILL get involved. Barring an apocalypse where ALL governments have collapsed, in which case everything we've talked about is irrelevant because we've been nuked. Byeah my point I guess is the half dozen Amerimujahideen warlords that would inevitably take over NYC will more than likely be more worried about forming alliances with foreign nations or worrying about the Chinese 15th Army moving north from the DC ruins than organizing warbands to lynch the poor Jews of Rochester county or whatever.

Tl;dr probably bigger fish, probably humans dumber and less violent than you think. But it sounds like you were a cop once, so your outlook on humanity is likely bad. Is that correct?

-Suppression

Probably another half dozen reasons you can infer

Nah its mostly switches like the SR07 and SR09. But also an issue with the cloud switches, protac and any of the other switches with a huge bezel around the button.

Yeah dude I know all about Palantir and Nick Land and Zizians and all the peptide fueled billionaires in Anduril and Oracle and Your Mom's House. Those guys might have a financial or strategic benefit to sewing chaos but are you saying they will suddenly flip the switch, betray the Feds, and start supporting antifa? After their star Jew has said repeatedly he hates antifa and that manifesto they released? Their manifesto if anything else showed the current ingroup of SF heavily aligned with the current powers of the US gov and military apparatus.

Great point on dispersal of type III vs type V building construction based on region. Speed and ease with which fire/rescue/EMS services deteriorate is a pretty interesting topic, very geographically dependent imo. Speaking from experience, I think local volunteer stations might last much longer. If boogs proceed to loo, I would be leaving mine to try and make it back home and see where I can plug in at a local dept after making sure the homestead is secure. Most if not all of my shift would do the same and I don't blame them - the county and all its libs and datacenters can get fucked tbqn. Some personnel would stay I'm sure, kids with no family or need to check on things back home. Problem is that everything, from dispatch to navigation to vehicle maintenance and resupply would all go analog, and that generation would be the least able to adapt.

Okay I have to again refer you to the precious statement I made about all that infrastructure not being a presumption during these boogs. We aren't talking about black swan terrorist events. Again you describe random individuals and I never disagreed those exist, that issue is like I said people aren't wet sand. I don't want to alarm you, but there have been schizos and armed retards in and out of America for all of human history, arguably more violent historically, decades of leaded gasoline won't magically form in our lungs and infrastructure collapse doesn't immediately negate decades of culture.

I gotta ask at this point for some kind of precedent you can cite in the US? I struggle to find one that was basically random miscreants organizing over democratized technology basically become terrorists? I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt, let's assume this new wave of technology is different. Let's set aside the "billionaires" that have access to the infrastructure and the investment of that infrastructure and the financial, cultural, and human incentive to use resources at their disposal to hedge bets and form countermeasures for contingencies, I will post a good excerpt responding to that weird dismissal (without precedent, as if rich people have never used their resources historically to do exactly what I described) after this post.

I think I understand the central thesis of your most likely scenario. Please correct me if I'm wrong. But you see these kinds of terror attacks, and cells that carry them out, directly disconnected as they may be, will be pressured by 5th gen campaigns to basically create what ultimately amount to suicide drones in the forms of radicalized Americans; this creates contested regions for cartel to expand due to financial interests
