Proposal for 12-Gauge conversion of M2 Brownings to shoot down drones.
>>
>>65141165
Based retard, which is the best kind of retarded.
They should still work on targeting systems that are better than the Mk1 Eyeball, like Bullfrog or slaving the RWS to the radar of APS, or datalinking to other sensors.
>>
>>65141165
retarded but I want them to make at least one and then film it
>>
>>65141165
Its retarded.
>low cost
>links and the feeding mechanism need to be developed
both of these cannot be true.
its like if somebody had an ipad case and battery then was told to invent the ipad from scratch.
its handwaving away the hardest part the guy who wrote this powerpoint slide is delusional
>>
>>65141165
Should be pretty straightforward. They're just about the same size; you can actually chamber and fire .50 BMG in a 12 gauge. You just get single digit velocity since the bore is so much larger.
>>
>>65141194
"Low cost" for the US MIC is more money than you will ever see in your life.

I've seen this before

Is it really too hard to make a .50cal with a proximity fuse?
Raufoss round has plenty of explosive payload and you could remove the penetrator and replace it with the prox fuse.

Barrel sleeve or replacement barrel would be fine. I think the hard part is how to get it to reliably cycle. Totally different bolt for sure.
>>
>>65141217
You'd obviously need a new barrel to go from .5" bore to .7" bore. You'd also need a new barrel to go from shotgun pressure to rifle pressure. It's a new barrel regardless of which direction you're going.
>>
>>65141165
Requiring a conversion is backwards, they should have opted for a special round that requires no modification to the weapon or belt; ie a .50 flechette or .50 snakeshot.
>>
>>65141165
I get why the M2 was chosen because 12ga is .50 caliber in diameter but I'm failing to see why it wouldn't be better to just develop a bespoke semi-auto or full auto belt-fed 12ga. especially one that's handheld where it'd be far more useful than the m2
>>
>>65141244
A drop-in is attractive because there are tens of thousands of M2s in reserve. Even though it would need a new barrel, retuning the action for the lower recoil, and a new belt/link system (plus probably restarting brass 12g production in military quantities), they don't have to make new mounts, turrets, et. al. Spending a couple million bucks on developing new disintegrating links is something they'd already have to do for a non-legacy system anyway, and the rest of it is trivial compared to engineering something that will fit in all the legacy mounts.
That said most of the time this sort of conversion proposal winds up being a dead end that sucks up some cash for 5 years or so and then quietly vanishes somewhere in the development or testing phase when they can't meet contract targets. So don't get too spazzed about it.

>datalinking to other sensors
That's what's happening right now.
>starts with small form factor radar, low SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power)
>usually solid state
>radar detects, tracks, and classifies drone
>detect- not too hard
>track- a bit harder
>classify- even harder
>radar feeds telemetry to RWS, maybe to optical for visual confirmation
>radar telemetry does slew & cue for visual ("look over there, about 10 degrees above horizon")
>human or optical recognition: "yup, it's a drone"
>"effectors" get to work
"Effector" is cUAS speak for "thing that makes drone go away". Might be kinetic (gun, counter drone, whatever) or non-kinetic (laser, microwave, rf jamming).
There is a TON of work being done on this.

>12ga is .50 caliber in diameter
>>
>>65141165
why not just make mega buckshot for the Mk19 agl
>>
>>65141307
We'd be better off bringing back a quad .50 setup, only semi automated with the guns closer together than the Maxson. Something we can potentially plop on a bigger MRAP or an APC

Alternatively we can convert a bunch of surplus M2HB's into M3's, leaving the newer M2CQB's alone. The M3 enjoys the faster fire rate, we just semi-automate it on a CROWS like mount

it's an age old joke that you can fit a .50 BMG cartridge in a 12ga because the diameter of .50 BMG's brass is the same diameter of 12ga, which is what I'm referring to

Does the 12 gauge round have the energy to cycle the recoil action of an M2? Im guessing it does if this proposal is real but man the difference in power from when I shoot trap vs when I shot an M2 yearrrrsss ago still sticks out in my mind. Im guessing the spring would have to change as well
>>
>>65141454
They can just make 4" shotshells. Doesn't matter that you can't chamber it in anything else, what the fuck else are you going to use a belt of 12 gauge for?
>>
>>65141454
>Does the 12 gauge round have the energy to cycle the recoil action of an M2?
Nope. Not even close.
>>
what fresh niggerosity is this?
>>
>>65141165
the XM-806 could probably work for this, given how much lighter it is.
>>
>>65141181
why not both?
automated automatic birdshot turrets
>>
>>65141454
Swapping to a lighter spring doesn't seem that complicated, the big problem will be getting it to go back into battery.

Fucking retared.
.12 GA does't have enough velocity for range and if you already have a M2 why not just load shot bullets like pic related? That way you get more effective range AND an interchangeable gun
>>
50 BMG seems like a big enough case to warrant its own drone loads. You could probably use actual buckshot too.
>>
>>65142676
I think this would be the ultimate choice, as funny as it would be to see a 12 gauge M2 be used as a general purpose vehicle weapon, an M2 that can take out drones then feed regular 50 cal loads for infantry and vehicles is way more useful.

They do not want to fill the skies with .50 BMG is the point. Shotgun pellets lose lethality a lot quicker and would pose less threats to personnel and infrastructure. Otherwise they’d have to create a self destructing .50 BMG round like they use for the 20mm CIWS.
>>
>>65141216
Could be a good use case for the argument of trying electronic components in ammo
>>
>>65142676
>.12 GA does't have enough velocity for range
shotguns don't get extended range because of velocity because the pattern spread scales linearly with range, resulting in either too much or too little spread to be useful. 12ga shells have more shot and better pattern than the .50 cal thing, although unless it's straight blowback modifying an M2 to fire those is not an easy task.

Patterning isn't the problem, kinetic energy is.
Which is why you end up seeing heavy, hot, tungsten shot with big balls as the preferred drone load.
You wont drop an FPV with just normal birdshot.

>>65141165
This shit is just the fucking Abzats from Metro, which was a DSHK converted to fire 12 gauge

Shotgun CWIS will exist in our lifetimes and I will laugh at all of you who told be it wouldn't work.
