Mexico is planning the rapid acquisition of new multirole jets and the F16 Block 70/72 is now the front runner. Mexico has long had a plan to replace it's fleet of aging F5 fighters by the mid 2030s but the timeframe has now been moved up. Under the new plan a minimum of 8 units are required to be in active service no later than 2028. Mexico has not published a firm number of total airframes desired but it is estimated to be between 16 and 48 units.

A Brazilian manufactured variant of the Gripen E/F was the frontrunner for the F5 replacement until recently. With Ukraine poised to acquire up to 150 Gripens, a Mexican tender would face delays and also be a secondary priority for the Sweden based Saab. A potential veto of the American designed engine powering the Gripen also looms although Saab has proposed a Gripen variant powered by an uprated EJ2000 engine in place of the GE-Volvo unit.

Mexico had planned to send Ukraine it's fleet of 50 Soviet designed helicopters at the onset of the current war, but only 3 airframes were sent before pro-neutrality politicians in Mexico blocked further deliveries. Under that arrangement, Mexico would have received heavily discounted Blackhawks to replace the Mi17 airframes sent to Ukraine. The current US administration has also been offering Mexico preferential deals on military equipment if Mexico plans to use them to fight drug traffickers. It now appears Mexico is poised to capitalize on both incentives to acquire the F16 and Blackhawk.

There is a separate Mexican Navy program to acquire long range twin engine superiority and strike fighters. This program has been long stalled with the F/A-18, Su-30, Rafale and unspecified Asian offerings on the table though this program lacks required funding with priorities going towards new surface vessels.

>The Peruvian F16 sale shamed Mexico into finally upgrading their air force.

Is there some Spanish language add campaign going on for the F16 on one of those accordion radio stations? Chile is going to upgrade theres before buying replacements too. Why'd it suddenly become so popular in the Mexican countries?

Given the antics of the Orangeman and her innate leftism and hatred of the United States, and the general anti-militarism tradition of the PRI from which her party descends, Steinbaum is almost certain to sabotage this deal in the way Trudeau and Carney did for the F-35. This will result in Mexico either flying the F-5 for another 10-20 years - well beyond what is physically possible - or them going with the Gripen like Canada did
>>
Manned fighter jets are obsolete and a waste of cash. In Mexico’s case they’re useless because their main enemy, the USA, would just 1 shot them all day 1.

Mexico should just spend all that money on drones and unmanned systems instead.

Fun fact: Back in 2013 Brazil wanted to acquire the F/A-18 but then the whole Snowden ordeal happened and it was revealed that the NSA spied on Brazil's president.
Because of that Brazil went with the Gripen instead.

Out of all countries, does Mexico need fighter jets at all?
Against the US it doesn't matter anyway, and their only other neighbor barely even has an airforce
Wouldn't it make more sense to instead invest heavily in CAS and ground attack aircraft, since they're mostly engaged in COIN against the Cartels?

Harfuch is almost guaranteed to be her successor and basically a Bukele-lite but with pseudo leftist social framing. He'll probably push this through, but I expect he'll still maintain a fake isolation from US military domination stance while actually pro-western and pro-military for financial purposes. He'll probably go through with a symbolic acquisition of a proper 5th gen but it will be something like the KF21 Mo-II, Kaan, a low spec export Euro stealth jet, or even something Asian. A handful will be acquired. Rarely flown and mostly sit around to show Mexico is big strong serious boy country. Maybe they'll even build some parts in Mexico and screw it together locally.

In my opinion the Gripen is the best option in the short term and the FS2020 if it actually ever happens or the KF21 gen 2 are the best options in the long term plus lots of drones. For the naval strike fighter the Su30MKK or Rafale were the best options back when the tender started a decade ago, but those sure as shit aren't happening now. Export variants of what the Japanese and Euros are proposing for next gen fighters in small numbers are what is optimal for Mexico but we know it's a dogs tuxedo that we'll see the navy actually funding the $2-5 billion that would require, even though the nation could technically afford it.

If you're Mexico you'd be retarded to use any US tech at all

Ignoring orange man you're always at the receiving end of US politicians regardless of party lines

Just go with Huezilian Gripens and away with any shred of US tech save for small arms
>>
Realistically, Mexico doesn't even need jets, who are they going to go to war with: Guatemala, Belice? The only international rivalry they have is with Argentina (over sports, economic development, racial composition, military defeats by great powers, etc) and, more recently, with Peru (over food, economic development, ancient history, etc). They are only buying them to maintain izzat in front of other latinx countries and maybe to appease Blumpf.

America is the biggest threat to Mexico

They should buy Bombardier, Embraer and Yuro stuff over American ones

>>65148574

>>
>>65148712
Mexico is in America, if you mean US, it's not realistic to pretend they can successfully defend from them in a conventional war. Only nukes could serve as deterrence and that'd get them immediately invaded, their only choice is to stay a subservient client state that poses no real threat and one of the best ways to do that is buying their weapons.

Mexico has a unique situation, they don't have an urgent need for new jets but the US admin in power is willing to give them new stuff very cheap or even near free if they plan to use it to fight cartels or will give their old helos to Ukraine. "Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States"

Mexico need to maintain credible air policing and defense capability. Otherwise, the US will just step in, do what they want, and erode Mexican sovereignty. It's less about seriously thinking that you could go against the US and more about projecting the resolution to do it anyways and getting the US to play by international rules. They could also be useful if anything were to happen with Mexico's southern or Caribbean neighbors.

>>65146918

For armoured vehicles there's the EBRC Jaguar for blowing up el jefe narco palaces and other French stuff along with IVECO Guaranis for amphibious missions.

They want BVR AABand heavy pen ATG because they know narcos have access to heavy weapons

The F-16 Block 70/72 (Viper) typically carries a unit flyaway cost of approximately $60 million to $80 million. However, full Foreign Military Sales (FMS) packages—which include training, spare parts, and weapons—frequently bring the total cost to over $100 million per aircraft.

On 23 February 2022, the United Arab Emirates announced its intention to buy 12 L-15s, with an option for 36 more.[15][16] The value of the deal was not released, the Emirati newspaper The National reported that China sells the L-15 for $10–15 million per unit.[17]
>>

>Maybe they're used?

>>
>>65146895
Mexico borders a nation significantly less functional and more boog prone than themselves, Honduras, and it would ideally be in Mexico's own interest to be able to project some force to help control their borders, which fighter jets can help with.
They wouldn't do that, because the Mexican gov't is eminently retarded and corrupt, and the evil faggots running the show over there personally benefit on not doing it, but it would be a legitimate purpose for brand new manned jets (which aren't obsolete, you third world megamongoloid).

The only reason the countries south of Mexico only have internal issues is because of us hegemony paying people to keep it in the family. Read the pre ww2 history of LATAM to see how close they are at any given moment from starting a war with each other
>>65148878
Mexicos proximity to the us is the only thing that has made those parasites able to experience anything more than a third world standard of living. They’re almost as bad as Canadians.
>>
>>65148878
The Mexican Army / National Guard already has had bad experiences with the Chinese trucks they were pseudo gifted by the Chinese. They were already having serious problems within a year of use and got the cloned Mercedes engines swapped out with genuine Mercedes engines from the L trucks. They're already relegated to auxiliary duty now. Given how many issues the Thai army has had with their VT4 tanks it seems like this unreliability extends to front line combat equipment too. Also the Chinese can't build reliable engines for shit. Mexico is better off just buying a right to licence assemble a cheap foreign jet like the Gripen or FA50 since there is already a strong aero industry nationally. Safran already builds engines in Mexico and GE & Pratt Whitney have partial assembly and remanufacturing in nation.
>>
>>65149007
If LATAM buys anything from anyone to avoid the MIA tag, it should be China. They’re the better budget option, and trade partner, and they could probably get away with stealing from them eventually and producing the models themselves if the things go belly up diplomatically.
>>
>>65149019
Mexico is almost guaranteed to not pay that much. El Trumpo is offering pretty sweet incentives for arms and training that takes out narcos. He views getting that done as a personal goal. That's probably the real reason this is going through. The in service by 2028 is probably because that's when his current term expires.
