What the hell was going on with the Mauser sniper rifles?Germans were supposed to be some autistic engineering nerds yet they come out with this "throw whatever on and hope it works" type of shit.
>>65151542There's nothing wrong with the rifle in the picture. The scope is of decent quality. It's not that important.
>>65151542Germany had a big private optic industry by comparison to other nations. This lend to the fact they just put different models of civilian hunting scopes on the k98k, to supplement the non-civilian scopes (which worked). Also most german non-civilian optics were trash.
>>65151611Pic related, the ZF41 was trash in comparison to contemporary german hunting/civilian scopes
>>65151542Brah you're talking about a country which adopted a single-action revolver, with a manual safety, with a wooden stick for an ejector, in 1879. Autism does not mean good.
>>65151619>long eye relief, low FOV, 1.5x magnification, and shit image qualityLiterally what is even the pointI get that it was more of a marksman than sniper scope, and the first has its place, but the combination of all four of these qualities might actually make it harder for me to shoot than with irons
>>65151542czech live up the engineering meme. german are just idea guys.
>>65151736why yes I do love when the slide stop breaks and leaves my handgun inoperable very cool thanks cz
It was common practice to select rifles with superior accuracy from mass-produced rifles and convert them into sniper rifles.
>>65151735>Literally what is even the pointiron sights but better
>>65151774Normally it was a best of X.
>>65151542>supposed to be some autistic engineering nerdsHave you seen their sniper rifles? Side mount? We got it. Low claw mount? Got it. High claw mount? You know we got it. To me, having a large variety of fussy and painstakingly fitted scope mountings IS autistic
>>65151944Twitter didn't exist back then and I doubt the procurement people cared about public opinion
>>65151735A low magnification like that is awesome for taking quick shots that are still better placed and faster than with irons. Try it, it's pretty nice.
>>65151736As I like to say>Germanic quality at Slavic pricesThough they're not as cheap as once was, I'd still say it's good value for the money
>>65152264kek
>>65151735same reason people use red dots idiot. you dont have to line up 2 points like iron sights you can just quickly put a single visual reference (crosshair) on the target which is a miillion times faster
>>65152282I easily use a 4x indoors, i have no idea what utility 1.5 would provide with eye relief that terrible
>>65151542That's basically the conception of every military sniper rifle of that period, and most to follow throughout the 20th century. >type of shit.Stop using Ebonics and learn something useful. Also the Mauser 98 is the pinnacle of German engineering in the sense that it is a rugged, high quality but not horrifically overengineered monstrosity like the G41, K43 or FG-42.
>>65151736Love me Vz24 simple as
>>65153654I would argue the G41 and G43 were victims of not enough engineering. The mechanism wasn't totally thought out
>>65153659You have a lion crest on there or?
>>65153668No I wish. It's a scrubbed Romanian. Just a nice beater. >>65153666Don't deceive me Satan. But yeah I guess I just wanted to comment how the Mauser 98 isn't really some autistic engineering feat, rather just an improvement of previous designs, but still an elegant but simple design compared to other german mega projects.
>>65153654No, most other countries tried this thing called standardization. In fact Germany tried it with a lot of other stuff in their own military.
>>65153742germany tried standardization with their own population but jews woulndt let them
>>65153773I can think of three different types of scopes that were used on the M1903 in WWII alone, let alone WWI, three different scopes that were adopted for the M1 Garand, I'm not familiar with the Lee Enfield but it looks like several different scopes were used on their sniper variants, there were different scopes used on the M21 (and its derivatives). So I think you're wrong.
>>65153773Shhh, the grown ups are talking.
>>65153792Meant for >>65153742
>>65153680The Mauser 98 is definitely as you said. Quite a lot of milling, but elegant and every part is chunky and a necessary purpose. My favorite thing about the VZ24 is the stock and hardware arrangement. Minus the wrist sling swivel. Read an old guns and ammo mag from like 2008 where the author, Richard Venola I believe it was, suggested that the VZ24 had better metallurgy than other 98s
>>65153792Only 3?There's more variation for WW2 Mauser scopes the M1903, Garand, Enfield, and M21 combined.
>>65153860That's because the Germans basically did the equivalent of going into a Cabela's and buying every scope in the building
>>65151542
>>65153858>VZ24 had better metallurgy than other 98sI remember hearing the same, but I couldn't remember for what. Either way I love mine. I'm kind of pissed I shot some corrosive yugoslavian ammo and forgot to clean it, got the barrel pretty rusty and maybe left it a bit frosty, its hard to tell though. >>65153860Didn't realize it was that many. Dang. I just figured Zf41 and Zf39 plus some one offs.
>>65153902>forgot to clean it, got the barrel pretty rusty and maybe left it a bit frostyThat is agitating. That happened to my 98k when I was 14: sportsman's guide called the Romanian surplus non-corrosive (it was 2005 and we didn't have a computer), which it obviously wasn't.But at least that doesn't spell the end of a barrel's useful life, they can often still shoot great, but will be harder to clean.
>>65154029Yeah, in the grand scheme of things it could have been worse. Rifling is still strong, and I think it shoots as well as it should all things considered. Funnily enough I also shot some romanian stuff that was non corrosive, it had a nice smell, like pine trees. I've been chasing that shit for years.
>>65154045I'll say, the solution to finding rust in the barrel, is to just shoot it out lol
>>65151542>Germans were supposed to be some autistic engineering nerds yet they come out with this "throw whatever on and hope it works" type of shit.As you might recall, they were busy being raped to death by a horde of Half-Mongol Half-Slavic ultra-violent homunculi.
>>65154045it was all corrosive. there is no non corrosive milsurp 8mm from romania. in fact i can only think of 1 source of non corrosive 8mm and it was from portugal. everyhing else 8mm that ive ever seen in the market the past 30 years is corrosive
>>65153330You're up against starving russian peasants with x1 iron sights. Not modern people with acogs lmao.
>>65153666G43 was fine, it was a Germanic SVT40G41 was a total fucking joke though.
>>65154078It took them until 1943 to start taking the war seriously, slipping behind was on them. I get that Hitler was prettified by the idea of another 1918, but he could have asked a little more of his people sooner than that. It took until 1943 to realize boutique production methods aren't great for much besides maintaining volkisch pride.>>65154327They couldn't have been that bad, they had the world walking on eggshells thru the 1970s. I say that as someone who wants every fucking communist on this planet strung from a tall tree
>>65154331The G43 needed more finishing, it had an awkward disassembly in the field, and more time in the shop and the range could have ironed out quirks like that. The flappers are fine, just needed more thought applied.>SVT40Tipping bolt makes for a radically different mechanism and arrangement. The only thing they really have in common is the gas system.
they attempted to do the right thing, but it was too late to matter
>>65151761Okay, why is it that CZ has the reputation for breaking slide pins, when plenty of other handguns use them in their designs, and it does admittedly look like a wear component. Is it heat treating? Or just how a CZ in particular cams with the pin?
>>65154045i remmeber the smell of that romanian surplus and it was stank. pine is not how i would describe it
>>65151542>yet they come out with this "throw whatever on and hope it works" type of shit.It did work....best optics and mounting systems in the world (at the time) .....the UK was using commercial hunting rifles with iron sights, and the US was using this:
>>65154932The Warner & Swayze sight is a perfectly balanced trifecta of autistic, based, and retarded.
>>65154932that's ww1 though, and the bongs started buying Winchester 5x scopes from US and US army did so too once they joined in. OP is a ww2 scope
