Fantastic first choice. I'm a gun spazz who also sells guns for a living. The place I work has an endless influx of people wanting the ar lookalike turk shotguns and I always try to guide them to the maverick unless they're married to semi auto.
I guy took my advice and ordered that specific gun in your pic to the shop and when I was handling it I was amazing at how light and handy it is.
Truly the essence of what a rugged, bare bones workhorse pump shottie should be.
That said, the 500 does have the nicer safety and a couple of other things, but for the sub 300 dollar shotgun market, the 88 is it WOOOO

>>
It's good but the shotgun home defense meme is kind of fudd-tier at this point. I'm a big fan of buying cheap when getting into something new and in this case cheap isn't bad quality so it is a completely rational choice that you'll enjoy.
>>
>>65154128
Its a great self defense gun
>>
>>65153919
Nice, maybe consider the 2 barrel combo so you can do some hunting
>>
>>65154128
People may not gonna get their 2k AR back after using it in a defensive shooting. May as well use a tried and tested shotgun especially when considering having a nogunz jury
>>
>>65153919
Good choice. If you've got a bit of wiggle in your budget I'd recommend going for the combo deal. It'll give you the option to try some sport shooting if you ever get curious.
>>
Good choice anon. I love my 88 Mav. Get the combo with the 28" and 18" barrel and you have a gun that can do almost everything. It's a little more up front for the combo, but saves cash in the long run vs buying the barrel separate.

I had a 500 and while the 500 is supposed to be "better" I don't see it cuz I just leave my shotguns alone and don't give a shit about changing out parts on them. Performance is exactly the same between the two. Ambi safety on the 500 was nice, but not enough to justify the price difference. Plus my 500 fucking broke on its first outing.

lol this thing is notoriously bad, my local gun store was advertising this and ATI ARs and even those ARs all sold but these Tokarevs are still sitting there months later, I went in recently and they still had a full stock of them but they’ve stopped advertising them because even these country fudds know it’s a paperweight. Don’t get near it it’s one of the biggest traps for new gun owners, obviously a cheap tacticool 12 gauge is gonna attract people who don’t know better
>>65153919
It was one of my first guns, I put a magpul stock on it which I think cost more than the shotgun itself

Get a .22lr rifle first and just plink away. Easy to control, fun indoors and out. And you can shoot it more often because the ammo is cheap af.

This.

So many ranges indoor and out around me don't even allow shotguns except for slugs, and those are not guns that are going to make a beginner ever want to practice again. A .22lr semi-auto rifle is the perfect firearm for learning the fundamentals and building proficiency that you can eventually transfer to a centerfire rifle or shotgun once you're good at shooting.

picrel is probably OPs best bet for a first gun.

Nigger, shotguns are easily THE most practical firearms you can own. Versatile ammo selection and plain simple, reliable action.

You can hunt practically anything with them, and they're great for both home-defense + drone dropping to boot.

>telling someone a shotgun is a bad first gun is not a shitpost.
It's god-awful shitpost.
Again, most hunters around the globe literally have a 12ga as their very first, and often ONLY weapon.

You are also once again waving that America-centrist idiocy everyone hates on the internet.
Handguns are practically unobtainium in many countries, NOT just a "couple hundred bucks", and absolutely USELESS in most cases.

Long guns > handguns.
Shotguns are also practically ban-proof.

t. My first two guns I ever purchased were a Mosin M44 in 7.62x54R and a Mossberg 500 in 12ga, and I'm a Europoor.
>>
>>65155139
I think a hand gun is a better choice for a first gun because of ammunition coast and the fact that it's far easier to find a range where you can shoot 9mm as opposed to a range where you can shoot 12 gauge
>>
>>65155143
One could say so, but even a povertyfag deserves to be able to protect their home/apartment/basement/burrow/nest
>>
>>65155173

>>
>>65155173
Not everyone lives in a cramped city where they have to ride the bus to the range. And yes, it's obvious you ride the bus.
>>
>>65155173
if youre desperate enough you don't need to practice as much for a shotgun.
>>
>>65154964
My first real gun was a 20ga mossberg, and that was the gun I started to learn involuntary safety habits on. I learned the absolute basic fundamentals of gun handling on bb/pellet guns when I was like 5.
>>
Where did OP say he has any intention of hunting ever? The other anon is right, in most scenarios a a PSA AR or 9mm handgun is a better first gun when no specifics are given. Depending on certain factors, a 22lr or a shotgun might be a better first choice, but they’re niche.

>>65155442
Yes, in the sense that “this is my first and possibly only gun” a .22 being the right choice is incredibly niche. If you’re not buying it specifically to plink off your back porch or shooting squirrels you’re better suited by an AR in basically every other category. You’re probably one of the retards that thinks the 10/22 is a good gun.
>>
>>65155551
>you are retarded if you think the 10/22 is a good gun
This is a very abnormal opinion anon, perhaps you are autistic. Is it good for home defence? No. Targets? No. Hunting? For varminting or eg grouse it is fine. Training? a bolt develops better habits but the ruger is fine. Plinking? Excellent. Fun? Probably loads of fun if it is your only gun and still cheap. The gun itself is very cheap. There is a big aftermarket.

The 10/22 is unironically one of the worst designed semi auto .22lr rifles of all time. Its existence has done irreparable harm to the caliber.

>inb4 but .22 is unreliable.
No, that’s just the 10/22’s inherent design flaws.
The ejector design is comically bad. The action is too short. The offset recoil assembly causes unnecessary bolt drag. The receiver mounting screw sucks, the trigger sucks, the bolt catch is a meme. The list goes on and on and on.
>>65155911
The good alternate universe is one where Bill Ruger was aborted and the HK 270 reigns supreme. Hell the AR7 is a better pick.
>>
>>65155927
The Ruger 10/22 is safe to dry fire because it is designed with an internal firing pin stop that prevents the firing pin from traveling far enough forward to strike the breech face of the barrel
