Why do modern helmets only cover the top of the head and not the whole face, surely a helmet shaped like this could be made from kevlar
>>
>>65154508
What would be gained and lost with this? Gain weight, lose hearing?
>>
>>65154510
You would not lose that much hearing, and if anything that would just mean you dont have to wear ear plugs when firing your rifle.

You would, goes without saying, gain protection of the rest of your head.
A infantry helmet is only somewhat heavy (have worn one), double the weight would be fine probably.
>>
>>65154511
You realize that helmets are for laying against the earth and not getting domed by artillery, or not bashing your juicy head on things. You're not supposed to get shot in the face.
>>

>Why do modern helmets only cover the top of the head and not the whole face
In an extremely paraphrased manner: 1) Field of vision and 2) As technology progressed, full face covering helmets proved to be unwieldy and unnecessary due to military science showing that you only need to prevent concussions due to the invention of blackpowder weaponry and the decline of melee combat
>>
Cheaper
Lighter
Easier to transport
Don't hinder visibility
Don't overheat the operator
Cover the one part of the head most likely to be hit by shrapnel and debris, which are the real thing modern helmets are supposed to stop, more than bullets
Cqc is dead so the chance of getting stabbed in the cheek is very low.

Interesting point

They make Kevlar collars for plate carriers, but the more shit you have on you, the heavier and hotter you are. I do see a lot of
Ukrainian guys with them though.

Too heavy. Corinthian helmets were usually under 3 lbs while having around 2 times more coverage area than modern military helmet.
So if you take something like MCH that weights 3 lbs already and add coverage you will 6 lbs helmet that is too heavy to wear all day.
Suxh helmet can be used as assault armor, wear for 2-3 hours than take off. But not general purpose helmet.

Protection from shrapnel. If you have lenses you can also protect from sun glare.
>>
>>65154508
>Why do modern helmets only cover the top of the head
Because modern soldiers aren't standing face to face with enemy poking at them with spears. Fucking retard.
>>
>>65154594
Face and neck protection are very beneficial against fragmentation minutions but thing is such protection is simply too heavy, much heavier than armor ancient armor.
>>
The bones in the face are sturdy, so they offer a certain degree of protection.

the concussion you would get with that kind of helmet would be off the charts. nah, bro, you either close it up and solve the breathing problem or you open it up to allow for optimal airflow so that concussions would be lighter for the user. The low cuts are already getting dropped faster and faster for highcuts with earpro.

Some of them do.

Wasn't there some baloney about how covered faces makes you look less human and thus more willing to get away with heinous shit?

>won't lose hearing
>also won't need earpro
Your lack of comprehension of basic physics is astounding.
>>
>>65154799
From both directions. Being anonymous lowers inhibitions and reduces sense of accountability; and for others being unable to see your face and read microexpressions causes anxiety and distrust. Its more relevant to policing than mil shit though, mil have much stricter ROE and if somebody is going to take pot shots at your patrol, they're going to do it regardless of whether they can see your face

More likely to head the head from above, than from the front or below.
Especially since humans don't look up.
>>
>>65154508
these helmets were able to sacrifice a lot in terms of weight, heat, airflow and sensory loss because they were put on at the start of set battles and only worn for a few hours
modern helmets are meant to be worn all day everyday because you never know when a drone or ied is going to rock your world

Helmets that are more protective are necessarily more cumbersome and uncomfortable. And if a piece of equipment is too uncomfortable, a soldier will simply stop wearing it, leading, ironically enough, to a potentially higher casualty rate
There is a reason that everyone who has a choice in what gear to use uses a high-cut these days, and it's not just to make a fashion statement
There is of course a tradeoff in protectiveness, but one should consider whether that extra protection is worthwhile. Militaries and equipment manufacturers alike have the data for how likely each part of the helmet is to be hit, by bullet or shrapnel, as well as the survival rate by type and general area of that hit. While the data isn't public as far as I know, I think the procurement trends speak for themselves.
Granted, this can be significantly skewed by the kind of war being fought. In particular, I've heard speculations that low-cut helmets would compare favorably in conflicts with heavy usage of artillery, airburst munitions and similar, and the fact that our recent enemies utilized little or no such technology distorts that data. But at the same time, we now have that exact kind of conflict going on in Ukraine right now and high-cuts don't seem to be going out of favor among troops even in that environment, which in my opinion speaks for itself.

That's the point.

the goal here is to AVOID penetration
>>
>>65154508
Shrapnel emphasis.
It's really more about keeping metal fragments out of the brain pan than actual bullet resistance. Bullet resistance is nice but required a lot of material. We can and have made full face protection but between the additional weight, difficulty breathing and communicating, and the fact that a big enough bullet is piercing the helmet no matter what you do means it's just not cost effective to make full armored face plates just yet. The biggest threat is still shrapnel from grenades, artillery, and IEDs.
>>
>>65154748
Because those aren't bulletproof

There, done
