Whoever signed off on EA-18Gs instead of F/A-18s is going to get shitcanned.

There is zero reason to fly EA-18Gs which are literally irreplaceable EW nodes for the navy that they NEED until F/A-XX is ready.

As far as airshow observers are concerned, there is zero difference between an EA-18G and an F/A-18. But as far as the navy is concerned, they just lost 1.2% of their total EA-18G fleet in one afternoon. Meanwhile, had two F/A-18s crashed, it would've been ~0.25% of the F/A-18 fleet.

The original mission scope was legacy airframe flybys.

That slowly transitioned into more and more "exciting" flybys for the crowds that eventually culminated in the last few years of what was being called "blue collar blue angels".

Essentially complacency, they assumed since they were already doing airshow flybys, modifying them to be more exciting would be a good thing, and for a few years it was fine, but eventually they started pushing for REAL aerobatics manuevers, but crucially, the EA-18Gs they flew were NOT AEROBATIC modified airframes. Blue angels and the thunderbirds fly modified airframes with sometimes modified flight laws or modifications to the stick feedback to allow more precise maneuvering. None of those modifications had been made to the EA-18Gs being used for these airshows.

This is just institutional complacency mixed with a total lack of proper risk management.

Even for slower low risk flybys, putting flight hours on EA-18G airframes is moronic when they're visually identical to F/A-18s.

They were NOT USN-approved for aerobatics, that has been a very recent development that was largely rubber stammped because they slowly transitioned from slow legacy flybys to modern high performance aerobatics and no one in the USN brass ever stopped to ask "why the fuck are we using EA-18Gs for this"?

It's nonsensical, serves zero function over an F/A-18 aerobatics team, and is demonstrably impacting the nation's ability to defend itself in the pacific.

They let pilots fly when the shit is their fault as long as it wasn't some sort of criminal intent. the guy that landed an F-22 wheels up got to keep flying. The punishment an F-16 pilot got when he landed wheels up was to only get to fly that f-16 once it was repaired (while he was at that base). There are lots of others. Gen Horner fucked up and scraped a sand dune when he was a young pilot and still ended up with four stars.

>(You) don't know this. (You) have Zero Knowledge.
The team was stood up in 2020, they spent 2020-21 operating strictly under the rigid safety parameters of the U.S. Navy Legacy Flight program.
They were completely barred from performing standalone tactical aerobatics. Instead, their job was simply to provide modern naval aircraft to fly in wide, stable, non-aerobatic formation alongside historic "legacy" warbirds (such as the F4U Corsair, AD Skyraider, or T-28 Trojan).

The maneuvers were limited to gentle banking turns and straight and level photo passes before breaking away to land.

The dangerous mission creep solidified between the 2022 and 2023 airshow seasons. Public affairs and squadron leadership pushed to elevate the show's energy, transitioning the team from a heritage formation asset into a full-scale Two-Ship Tactical Demonstration (TACDEMO) team.

The historic warbirds were largely pushed aside for a dedicated, multi-ship jet performance. The team secured NAVAIR and FAA waivers to perform an independent, high-energy tactical routine.

They began executing the exact high-risk maneuvers usually reserved for the dedicated F/A-18E/F "Rhino" teams; dynamic vertical pulls, opposing high-speed crosses, and low-speed, high-angle-of-attack (high-alpha) formation rejoins.

And just a few years later we lose 2 irreplaceable EA-18Gs because of this retardation that never needed to exist in the first place.

Even more annoying, this was at a USAF air base in a town where 80% of the population works with/for the USAF.

No one at that airshow gave a single flying fuck about EA-18Gs.

Depends on the situation. In the Navy the senior incident reporter who does the investigation is a rando O-6 with the same type rating as the lost aircraft. If you somehow have missed him off previously it can go bad for you. That happened in the last fatal growler accident in which the guy who didn't drive his jet into a mountain and wasn't the flight lead lost his wings while the accident report absolved of all blame the two female Aviators who died, despite the Pic of the lost aircraft having Kratom in their system, being rated substandard on air work, and obviously the party at fault

>wrecking ball
Drove into something on the ground. Usually shortened to "wrecker" in the air.
>Alf
Pussy-eating joke. Usually used for a guy that's way too into it, a known lesbian, or to ruthlessly mock a man who thinks it's a little gay to munch rug. "Red wing" is a closely-related handle.
>La Nina
Hellacious PMS and/or got something flooded in the barracks by clogging the toilet. Have run into both in the wild previously.
>Stuka
Screamed while he was in dive training

The full conversion is a depot-level job that takes a couple of weeks. If the wiring harnesses are already run in the bird - and several blocks of -F Hornets have them done out of the factory just in case - a couple of I-level techs and the plane's O-level crew can do it in under 48 hours. The distinction between BUNOs is largely for supply purposes.

HAHAHAHAHA wat?

A standard Rhino has a heavy internal M61A2 20mm rotary cannon and an entire ammunition drum handling system buried in its nose. In the Growler, that hardware is entirely absent. In its place is a permanently integrated, liquid-cooled Airborne Electronic Attack (AEA) avionics palette. You don't just swap that out in 48 hours; it requires completely different internal structural bulkheads and mounting architecture.

When Boeing originally tested the Growler with the heavy, high-drag wingtip pods, the aircraft suffered from a severe aerodynamic phenomenon known as "wing drop" during high-g maneuvering. To fix this, the Growler's wings were structurally modified at the factory with prominent wing fences and a distinct leading-edge fairing profile to control boundary layer airflow. A standard F/A-18F wing does not have these aerodynamic modifications.

The wingtip missile launch rails (LAU-127) on a Super Hornet are designed to launch Sidewinders. On a Growler, these are replaced by permanently attached ALQ-218 tactical jamming receiver pods. These aren't just snapped on; they are structurally integrated into the wingtips to handle completely different aerodynamic loads and vibration profiles.

A Bureau Number (BuNo) is a unique, unchangeable lifetime serial number assigned to a specific physical hull from the moment its construction is authorized. It is stamped directly into the primary structural carry-through boxes of the airframe. The BuNo dictates the exact blueprint, structural metal composition, and wiring schematic of that specific machine. It is the furthest thing from an arbitrary number.

When Boeing was building the very first two EA-18G developmental test prototypes (EA-1 and EA-2), they took two F/A-18F Block II airframes that were unfinished on the St. Louis assembly line and rolled them into a separate hangar to complete them as Growlers.

That is the CLOSEST Boeing has ever come to converting an F/A-18 into an EA-18G.

Nope, Growler production was shuttered years ago, even the Super hornet production line is currently sunsetting, most of the 2ndary suppliers HAVE shut down their production lines, northrop for example made some of the wing sections, they announced the final production run was earlier this year, they made enough to fulfill the orders still being made, but they have no future orders and so the production line is being mothballed and the factory space reallocated to other production.

EA-18Gs are 100% irreplaceable.

Nah, we're far more likely to see EW on dedicated CCAs.

Imagine an F-47 paired with 1 or 2 radar/EW CCAs and 2-4 radar/IRST/missile CCAs.

EW needs proximity to be useful, that doesn't happen when you're in a slow ass C-130 100+ miles away.
>>
>>65163698
Even dedicated CCAs are questionable. Stand in jamming for a cutting edge VLO platform requires orders of magnitude less jamming than covering 4th generation platforms like the Super Hornet. Intact that level of jamming would be counter productive as it’s more likely to alert enemy systems to the presence of a 6th generation platforms aircraft than they are to detect it on their own. Jamming going forward is likely to be handled by a combination of onboard EW suites and follow ons to the MALD-J than dedicated platforms

>why even bother with a gay little drone when you can just make the missile do that shit?
Because you can't.

EW in a contested 6th gen near peer environment requires sustained high energy output, which requires a liquid fueled engine (or two) and a lot of fuel and cooling to generate enough electrical power to run the computers/emitters/sensors.

It's also why the US is bothering with the F-47 at all, if they could just fit all this shit into missiles and drones they would, but they can't reasonably do so, which is why F-47 is a monster drone node with ~800-1200kW of installed electrical generation potential. (For reference the F-35 is ~80-160kW).

because any missile advanced enough to do all of that is going to cost $10M+, and at that point you're getting into drone territory anyway which can at least land after their mission assuming they're not shot down or suicided into a target.

A solid rocket fuel missile is ALWAYS fully expended once fired, whether you hit a target or not.
>>
>>65163919
ICBMs are not new technology. The rocket equation is a tyrant and if you want to build a missile that can deliver a 2000lb warhead to the Middle East or East Asia from America with any accuracy you are spending dozens if not hundreds of millions of dollars for that one strike. Or you build a plane for a similar upfront cost, but you can use it dozens to hundreds of times with each strike costing a tiny fraction of an ICBM strike with the added benefit of not spooking every nuclear power on earth. Missiles are not used for everything because they are not good at everything. Jet aircraft bring the same launch economy to war that SpaceX brought to satellite launches. Reusability is king

Yep, it compresses the spine too much and fucks you but they are working on new ejection seats that will eject you as gently as possible based on rate of decent and time until impact.
Over all it looks like a pretty cool system and if the sensors don't have reliable data it just does a full force ejection as a failsafe.

>>
>>65164530
Could they build a tertiary rocket in the seat, so if you eject in hostile territory, you stay in the seat until close to the deck and then that rocket fires right before impact?
>>
>>65164549
>then that rocket fires right before impact?
Why?
The parachute slows you to an acceptable impact speed.
A skilled skydiver can land on their feed without fucking their knees, bad landings are because the pilot is unconscious, wounded, hit terrain, or is just bad at parachutes.
Just train them to be better with parachutes and the rest wouldn't matter if you were landing even softer in the seat.
>>
>>65164549
You are always going to want pilot / seat seperation because the seat is heavy and the landing could be uneven enough for it to roll.
Imagine surving being shot down, ejecting and then being beaten to death as your seat rolls down a mountain with you still strapped in.
