They started trying to make something better than a submachine gun and ended up with a gun that could be used as an infantry rifle (even though they hadn't realized it). In practice, however, the STG-44 is more complex than modern assault rifles, and the cartridge it fires is weaker than 7.62x39mm. It'd be a major downgrade to anything we currently have on the market. If you have a cool rifle idea, don't even bother with the 8mm Kurz cartridge.

Now make it not even a proper reproduction and there's even less reason for anyone to buy it. You might have sold like three to simpletons if it was in 7.62x39, but by chambering it in 7.92x33 you've lost them. The STG is only worth it if you can get an actual STG. If you're going to make a new one, you are no longer producing a thing with historical value, and it's not old enough for its archaity to be a novelty like with say reproduction revolvers. Instead, you're just making what might as well be any other modern semi-auto rifle, but worse in every way, at 3x the cost.
