Receiver and gas block mike at about .001 undersize, a good interference fit, while the front and rear sites are about half a thou oversize, will that be an issue? Consensus on old forum posts varies. Some say no problem, some say you need to knurl the barrel

>>65230603
Ammo is so expensive I may sell my drum and buy a bunch of 5 and 10 rounders instead lol. Harder to magdump $70 worth of ammo in a range trip that way

As long as you can't spin them by hand I wouldn't worry. If it's too loose, they can slip while drilling/installing pins. It's a bigger deal for the gas block since carbon can blow out the sides but as long as they don't rotate while pressing it's not the biggest deal in the world.

>knurling
I've done it a few times. Some people use an expensive hand knurling tool or a lathe, but you can get away peening the journal with an auto punch. The little divots have raised edges which can add 1-2 thousandths if you do it all the way around. Another option is to use a pipe cutter. This is a good option because you end up with concentric raised sections which is good for gas seals. IME most barrels are too hard to be scored by cheap pipe cutters though.

If yours turns out to be loose I would just space out a few rings of punch marks. You wouldn't need a lot since you're already pretty close. Mask off the edges of your journal with masking tape so you don't punch the metal in a place that will be visible. The other thing you need to remember about knurling/peening is that you cannot uninstall the part without destroying the raised area and making it loose again. Once you have the part installed you need to leave it on because pressing it off will flatten the deformed metal thus undoing your work.

pic rel is from a gas block swap that I did. The block was about 0.0015 oversized. I peened the bottom with an auto center punch so that the barrel would get pushed up against the port to seal better. This is a really extreme example and not something that I would do to someone else's gun, but it works in a pinch if you have no shame. Obviously, your barrel wouldn't need nearly as much, maybe 4-5 rings spaced out. Leave some good metal so you can re-knurl it in the event you have to press it off.

Sorry don't know of any AK builder in PA but on the East Coast I can suggest CW gunwerks.
>>
>>65231753
Thanks, I only mentioned it because someone asked the last time I asked about builders but when I answered they were already gone. Just figured I would put it upfront. I guess it doesn't really matter where the builder is, just so long as they're good and aren't the most expensive.

Florida wouldn't be a terrible move but you should stay out of South FL which is either highly ethnic neighborhoods where US born citizens can't speak English or 80 year old run HOA nazis. Florida surpassed my expectations and has let several of their idiotic gun control measures get struck out of court so they have open carry finally and I think getting rid of the 72 hr bgc but they're still anti bump stock/FRT and Red Flag happy. GA or AL would be good moves if you want to live somewhere where there just isn't an absolute fuck to give about gun laws but GA is looking more purple every election cycle do to ATL's negro Mecca status. I'm surprised RI stayed a bastion of ARs and normal mags as long as it did. Growing up there was a fucking hellscape of Karens and helicopter moms

Anyone autistically smart about 24mm gas block FSBs? I have an SLR 107UR with 16" barrel I'm trying to SBR. It's hilariously overgassed. I'm assuming it won't need any gas port work.

My question is, would a Smith need to remove the fsb? Or can I just have him saw it flush to the fsb? And crown it?

Thoughts?

I've heard anecdotally that some rifles are so over gassed that it doesn't matter or that using a cone booster helps. However, I think the prevailing notion is that you'll have to press it off to remove the plug.

Is your gunsmith local? If I were you, I'd ask your smith how much extra you'll have to pay for the FSB to be removed. If he wants hundreds of dollars extra, I would be tempted to pass on the port work to see if I get lucky. Pressing will also probably damage the paint on the FSB if that's something you care about.

If a second trip is too much trouble/creates extra expenses, then just have him do all the work.

Does anyone have any kind of ideas how to remove a dent in the spine of a steel mag? In reality it needs to be beat onto a mandrel, but since I don't have one nor am I gonna blow $400+ to fix a couple $10 mags, I'm looking for a creative solution.

>>
>>65251751
Find a wrench that's wide enough to fit in the spine and then leverage it back into shape. I would brace the opposite side or clamp it in a vice, so you don't distort it.

For dents in the center, you can pound a piece wood into it. Don't bother trying to curve it or anything crazy. I've fixed a couple of Galil mags that way.

308 20", $1,150 (sold)

Sorry for the faggy blogpost, but I have a burning question, and what I'm trying to covney is I'm on a hardcore journey to find what I am looking for. When I DID have my ak, I had a century arms one, but it always seemed so lame to me. When I compare the ones from here, they always seemed cooler, higher quality, more awesome but in a way I couldn't explain it. Maybe it's the metal, maybe it's because they are from a cool country. Is my guess correct that century arms just has dogshit crap metal? it didn't attract me for some reason. Is there an AK that you guys could recommend for me to feel and see the quality I'm looking for? Like I said, I have an incredibly small understanding of the AK world, but I want something sexy to look at. I hate all the AKs that the Dallas gun shops have. They all seem so fucking bland and boring. I want wooden furniture, I don't want a matte gritty looking metal, but something glossy and well made. Something to be proud of.
I understand if nobody wants to spoon-feed me, but even if you could give me a country or a brand, hell anything to share, I'd massively appreciate it. I'm still so fucking mad I had to sell my banned chinese AK mags. Seriously, I fucking hate my memories.

I would think about making a small mandrel. Not the full mandrel but just a tiny slice of it. Would be pretty easy to shape it out of a wood or aluminum bar. Aluminum bar is about the same price as wood at Home Depot last, I checked. That will last longer but its more effort to cut depending on your tools.

Take off the floor plate and then trace the bottom of your magazine onto your choice of material. Then cut out the mandrel. When you're trying to repair a ding/bend you actually have to stretch the metal beyond where it's supposed to be so the mandrel has to be pretty tight otherwise the dent will shrink back just shy of the surface. If your mandrel turns out to be too small to fully remove the dent you can wrap HVAC aluminum foil tape around it to increase its size. Smack the mandrel through with a dowel, socket extension or whatever. Had to do that a few times with my CETME receiver. My mandrel dowel was too small, so I had to add layers of foil tape each time I rammed it.

>>65252598
> I want wooden furniture, I don't want a matte gritty looking metal,
You want a WASR I think
>>
>>65252665
wait sorry I completely misread that lol. WASRs are kind of gritty and matte in terms of finish.
>>
>>65252669

>"oh, maybe he didn't read that part, or maybe these are just one-off photos"
fucking kek.
>>
>>65252598
I think this is a good reference to what I'm looking for.
>>
>>65252719
NTA, but I think its funny that you still picked a Romanian AK, except that one is obviously a kit build UF.
The question I'd ask is how much are you wanting/willing to spend on this "pretty" AK?
You can always paint a WASR, you know.
The phosphate finish is actually very good at taking paint.
>excuse the post from rebbit, it was the easiest to find example
>>
>>65252797
I'd say 1k to 2.5k kek, and yeah, that is pretty ironic
>>
>>65252719
That's a Romanian kit build of some kind. As kit builds, they tend to be blued or have some kind of black oxide finish. They're usually done in small batches by a multitude of different manufactures so you can't really expect them to be available regularly. Atlantic, PSA, Arms of America do them occasionally or combine surplus with parts of their own making in the case of PSA. That's not an extensive list by any means that's a place to look. Alternatively, you could buy a parts kit, and have it sent to someone but that will be expensive and lengthy.

FWIW I think WASRs are fine rifles. They're sort of the go-to option for a lot of people. As >>65252797
said phosphate is a very good substrate for paint so long as you degrease it. A lot of militaries and professional builders opt to parkerize and then paint over it because it increases the adhesion ability.
>>
>>65252810
>kit build
>I just learned they are military parts
holy fuck, I thought it was just a meme to get my hands on something like that. I didn't know what to search for back then but I didn't know I was looking for a kit build. There was no other purpose other than thinking it would be cool to have one with such parts. I'd imagine the quality/style is a bit nicer than your typical soulless factory shat gun. I think I just hate factory rifles because I grew up with my dad and grandpa having such bland black fucking rifles. It's almost like I have a rebellion to a certain look of guns at this point.
I can imagine kits are a bit pricey in comparison. Can I just give the parts to my local gunsmith, or is there more to it?

>>65252832
>I'd imagine the quality/style is a bit nicer than your typical soulless factory shat gun.
Quality depends on who builds it. Sometimes the parts are worn out or poorly fitted. Sometimes they were never issued so they're practically brand new. From a material standpoint milsurp parts are usually higher quality than commercial parts but you have to remember that these are still "factory shat" guns from decades ago. I have a milsurp Romanian under folder from the 60s that looks way nicer than my Romanian AKM from the 90s. You can also have fully functional brand-new parts that look like shit just because. It's a dice roll really. That's the downside of parts kit builds

>Can I just give the parts to my local gunsmith, or is there more to it?
No sadly. They take specialized tools and most gunsmiths aren't good for anything beyond assembling AR-15s and cerakoting. You'll have to ship it off to builder of your choosing.
>>
>>65252897
Hmm, yeah I've been reading the tools get crazy and the work is not for some idiot who can blow himself up. I'm definitely not that ignorant. I suppose I could just buy a kit that I like from a reputable seller. I'm not patient enough to wait from the long wait times people apparently have.
As for the gamble on quality of parts, that's a shame but I really shouldn't expect more, as I went through the same things with mosins. I'll keep an eye out from the sources I was given earlier.
Thanks anons.
>>

What you want is either a kit build Romanian like Arms of America and others sell, or something like a WBP Jack. Both are from old combloc countries so they look right, not like US made Century blandness or tactical gayness. One's got all the important parts from Romania, the other is a really well made commercial build from Poland using FB Radom barrel. Either way, get something from an old combloc country with a chrome lined barrel. Maybe a Bulgarian kit build AK74 or a Zastava M70 too

Here's your options, only 1/4 are in stock right now. For some reason all AKs are out of stock mostly everywhere lately. I would just get the Pioneer 5.56 if I were you, it's fine most of the time. Or if you're ok with spending a little more than $1000, save up and get the WBP or the romanian kit build but they take 6 months to build and ship to you. That said, my PSA AK101 is shitty quality but shoots like a dream. One of my rivets can fit paper underneath though and that's not good lol

stamped and milled are equally good. Milled is heavier and more expensive and the "older" style. Milled often have a smoother action when cycling the action with your hand. Those are the Arsenal guns from Bulgaria and a few others. Stamped is lighter and cheaper and "newer" style. Most rifles are stamped.

>>

Reliable in what way? Chinese (polytech, norinco) AKs are solid and will outlive you, but if you're looking for performance such as tight groupings, tourneys, HD, you are looking in the wrong place and should look at /arg/.
>>
>>65253204
Probably more than the 7 62x39 and .308 but less than the 5.45 (most desirable Saiga).
Are you going to have it converted? Be aware that will add a significant amount to the cost. Thankfully there are many more sources for AK-100 series conversion parts these days. Gunsmith costs are usually reasonable but still like $500 for a conversion if you provide the parts.

Honestly if the price for the rifle + conversion is less than $2k I'd prefer it over a Meridian 101 given people are reporting accuracy issues with theirs. Would those Azerbaijani parts be okay for the conversion, or should I just get some Bulgarian parts?
>>65255988
Yeah that looks great, exactly what I'd want. Except I'd want to run a 5.5 triangle folder instead of that version of the folder. It is kind of stupid, but I wanna clone a build I use in the SPT-AKI mod for Tarkov. I had a 101 for so long I repaired it twice from Mechanic before I 'retired' that gun and bought a new one.

Norinco AKs aren't exactly bad, but you have to remember that they haven't been imported in like 30 years. They are collector's items at this point. So not only are you buying a gun that has spent 30 years being shot or rusting away in bubba's attic, but there is also little aftermarket support since Chinese AKs aren't a 1:1 to regular Warsaw Pact spec AKMs like the WASR-10 or WBP's guns. On top of all this, Chinese AKs were blued rather than parkerized or painted. Bluing looks good, but it's actually one of the worst firearm finishes in terms of durability and rust prevention. Unless you really want a Chinese AK for your collection, I would just buy a WASR, WBP, or Zastava M70 off the shelf and not think too hard about it.

It's on the higher end, but that's not a god awful price. Is that in you budget? 7.62x39 isn't exactly inexpensive anymore, so factor that into getting started. That $1200 turns into almost $2k real quick with a case of ammo/some extra mags.
>>
>>65257219
Yeah, it's strange because I've been gifted exactly $1200 from my boss for my birthday, and I just want to buy a gun with it. That, or I should save for something I truly want, like an uzi or an mp5k. I dunno, man. If I had to choose between the three, I feel like an AK is more important to have out of the three. I'm so on the fence. It sucks because I'm hyper aware of the bullshit going on with Russia that ammo skyrocketed. We don't even get imports of ammo tins from them anymore, right? Fucking hell.
I miss when I knew that boxes of surplus cosmoline dripping boxes would flow from Russia and into USA. It sucks ass with everything going on.

I had this exact idea but with CSSpecs 6.5 Grendel AK mags and a homebrew 6.5 Grendel upper
You'd need to trim the upper though for AK mags unless you specifically get one cut for them; they're wider than AR uppers are meant to accept, but otherwise it works just fine.
FM Products (I think that's the company name? It's Foxtrot Mike) used to make an entire bufferless AR that feeds from 5.56 AK mags, so you could even start there if you find a stripped lower secondhand (they used to sell the lowers, but the entire product line appears to be discontinued now).
>>65257093
NTA but there's a lot of online tutorials for a faux wood look on plastic parts, it's usually in 3d printing and cosplay spaces though.
It's usually a light brown undercoat (or a light plastic like tan), then a few alcohol inks (reddish, brown or orange colors all mixed) to give a fake grain that is then brushed on, then a clearcoat (optional, alcohol inks don't run unless you pour alcohol on them).

A .308 Saiga? I bought one just before my gay state banned cool guns.
I've cooled off on it over the few years I've owned it and if my state wasn't so gay I'd just sell/trade it for a G3 clone. I'd then get something like a Vepr 308/54r and get the easily available SVD clone furniture for it. That's what I wanted from this to begin with but it's been a struggle to get a proper stock and I'm not proficient in CAD yet to make one myself.
I was lucky enough to get an Ironwood handguard before Matt passed away (RIP) but I missed out on a stock. So now I'm floating between the 3 I have: the PSL one you see here, the black polymer one that you saw on ban-era MAK-90s and Maadis (which would be perfect if it were wood desu), or a Rhineland Arms PSL stock I modified but broke on the first range trip. The latter I still have and am disappointed it didn't work but I feel it could potentially work if I tried again. The break isn't in the stock itself, I carved an insert and glued it in, then shellacked over the top. That insert is what broke so I could theoretically remove it and try again.

Break, similar on other side.
To remedy this I would attempt to create more space on the inside as I'm sure the recoil pressed the rear of the receiver up against the wood and cracked where it was glued. I should have measured better but whaddyagonnado.

And that black polymer one for comparison. Note in this picture how there's material where the webbing of your thumb would be, that's what the wood insert was attempting to replicate. The polymer stock has basically a shelf that the receiver rests inside of which is idea in this application. Also notice the original look of the Rhineland stock before I applied the insert and finish. Walnut wouldn't be my first choice but it turned out fine. Doesn't match the Ironwood handguard at all unfortunately

You're right
The brainspace for "Zastava SHOT Show 2026" was taken up by the M84 for me, so I brushed over it
I figure they'll start coming in around Q3 start, so you won't see them on-market until Black Friday at the earliest, most likely spring/summer 2027, assuming nothing else happens to Serbian exports (or imports).
Now I got my own hopes up for a 6.5 Grendel production AK and I'm sad

Yea, that's why I want Zastava to make 6.5 Grendel AKs; they're already tooled for it on the .mil side of the company, so it'd just be a case of making a production line.
I missed the boat on a 6.5 Grendel Vepr and don't want to pay the boomer tax

You could probably make it work with a Dremel and a large spacer. The lower HG is held on with a barrel clamp. The krink handguard is a bit shorter than the M85, so you'd have to make something like a really thick washer to go in between the handguard retainer and handguard. If you have a drill press you could make it out of aluminum round stock.

The carry handle is only held on by a screw that goes into the front sight post. The back of the carry handle just slips over the hinge block and gets held in place by spring tension. I think the M85 gas tube is lightly longer so the shorter carry handle might not clear your upper handguard, but it could be trimmed with a Dremel.

I don't own an m85, but I'd be tempted to try it. I'm already looking at ways to fit it onto other stuff like my lynx or JTS

Also, I don't think you'd have to modify the internal parts at all. AFAIK Yugo and AKM receivers are the same length so the distance between the FCG is identical so long as you ditch the rear handguard ferrule on the M85. You can use the same trigger linkage
>>
>>65278446
I wouldn't be too worried about the handguard pieces slotting in (although like you said, I'd probably need a spacer not to mention having to alter it to actually connect to a Yugo). My biggest concern would be the extended gas tube making the handle not line up properly. I'm worried that the extra length would be too much to fix even with a dremel. That's not even mentioning that I'm just basing this off current M85 gas system, which will need be altered to accommodate the caliber swap, so there's no real way to know for certain what I'd need to do until I had both the gun and the kit in my hands

No, most of the Beryls production run it has had a shelf added to the safety lever. Early Beryls just used a Tantal safety lever.

>cold war surplus
No
Tulammo, Wolf and Golden Tiger weren't "Cold War surplus," they were new production from Russian ammo plants. Their market share (like 40% of ammo sold in 2021 was from Russia) was forcibly discontinued by sanctions. You missed this part, which is the most important when talking about AKs and ammo prices.

It's supply/demand, all economics is. The supply of ammo was forcibly capped by the government blocking imports from Russia (and China in the 90s), but demand stayed the same, so prices skyrocketed. Why American mfgs don't upscale their capabilities to meet demand is simple to explain as well: market volatility.
Watching gun companies in the US since 2020 showed a massive amount of over-investment that's killing those companies (Aero, Del-Ton, etc) now that conditions changed. The ammo mfgs appear to be the opposite extreme of being over-conservative with expenditures and refusing to take risks.

Yea, it happened to just about every industry I've paid any sort of attention to (guns as I mentioned, video game studios like Bungie or even publishers like Sony/MS, shipping companies like UPS, etc). Ammo is the only industry I've seen that at-large didn't really act like the line would go up forever, when it absolutely did and they should have invested in expanded production.
I don't blame them though, one election going badly or safety precautions being shirked (and causing a plant to kaboom) and their "new investment" may kill the company, so being overly cautious is a given.
RIP $30 Anderson lowers, the worst casualty of bad market planning.

How many Mosins exist? It's the third-most produced rifle ever. What prices do you see them selling at recently? How much are they actually worth? How many 98 pattern Mausers? Same line of reasoning, but 2nd-most produced rifle ever.
"There's a bunch of them out there" doesn't mean you should butcher the ones that you DO have, because eventually there won't be more to get, and then prices skyrocket. Why expedite that process, instead of taking care of things and trying to preserve what we DO have for the future, both for ourselves and those that come after us?

milsurp in general has only become valuable because of a very recent paradigm shift in what is considered valuable. you can probably pick up an all original (albeit percussion) 1850s-90s tennessee rifle for the same price as a refurb mosin. do they really have the same value? all im saying is that value is relative, and what people consider valuable now may not necessarily be valuable in the long term future
>>
>>65295291
>value is relative, and what people consider valuable now may not necessarily be valuable in the long term future
Sure, but scarcity plays into value as well, and is a variable that is directly controllable by an individual's actions in maintaining the item in its "optimal value" (for surplus items, as-issued) condition. Other peoples' perceptions of value are not controllable by you, only the condition of the item and the quantity of items.
On the BP gun point, ease of use also matters, which is a non-zero part of why black powder surp rifles are usually a bit cheaper as a whole (despite the historical significance and lack of paperwork) than smokeless surp, even if the BP gun is in better condition overall.
>>
>>65295316
i just think that the current value of milsurps are artificially inflated between scalping boomers and millenizoomers who want the call of battlefield emeny at the gates etc. rifle. once the boomers die off and ww2 truly leaves the public consciousness i think the average century billboard surp rifle will be no more valuable than its contemporary sporting rifle/shotgun

Do not buy:
PSA
Pioneer
IO Inc
Riley
WBP

Buy:
WASR
Zastava

Nice quality kit builds done right

In order to build your own you'll need to be an actual gunsmith or fairly mechanically inclined. Knowing what dimensional spec is necessary for a correct hydraulic press fit and knowing how to measure that precisely for example isn't exactly "easy" per se. It isn't hard either, but it is something to be aware of.

They suppress okay especially with a KNS adjustable piston, and a lower back pressure.

You really can't go wrong with a WASR 10 plus some surplus furniture. Check that the front sight post isn't canted (straight up and down when you look down the sights) and that the magwell fits mags well without being too tight or having too much wobble.

Picture related. WASRs are just good. Do not listen to faggot gay tranny redditors that suggest WBP. WBP is a small commercial shop that employs maybe 80-100 people top and using CNC machines to churn out piece of shit trash commercial spec AKs that are NOT metallurgically nor in terms of manufacturing process the same thing as a real deal military quality AK. WASRs on the other hand are made by ROMARM Cugir which is the state level and state funded military armament factory of the Romanian which employs thousands of people and sells actual machine guns to actual militaries. WBP faggots seethe and cope. The irony is a WASR will be cheaper than a WBP too lol.

That is fine the wood that they come with generally is very poor quality.
