New acquisitions today, Carbine is an Inland, one of the RTI imports that wound up in an LGS for a decent bit less than going M1 rates online and was in overall decent shape, same with the M1917. >>65326360Congrats on owning 500 rounds of inaccurate, unreliable bore-corroders. Surplus ammunition is inferior to modern ammunition in all ways except for the chemical stability of the primers. Modern Ammo only lasts about ~20 years before the primers become chemically inert. The corrosive primers of old surplus ammunition is the only reason it can still be fired today. Thus what you have is a great option for sitting on top of for a SHTF scenario (in which case hopefully you have an M76 or Hakim so you're not defending your home with a bolt action) or it's just ammo that makes you have to work even harder after shooting to ensure you don't ruin your gun. If it's worth something to you then keep it as a curiosity. I have a few hundred rounds of waffenamp-marked 8x56R that I don't shoot just because I think it looks cool... and it's steel cored.

Bought one of these Parker Hale cadet stocks from old western scrounger, going to do an ambiguous "retro sniper" build because all correct Parker Hale shit is too expensive I like ows, they have cool shit. I bought their 5 for $500 zastava shotgun deal a year or so ago, was able to make 4 out of 5 work with parts from the unrepairable one. Worst thing was welding a broken firing pin but that was less difficult than I imagined it would be.
Finally got around to test firing my new M1917 today and saw that the brass was deformed like this, slightly bulged but only on one side. Is this normal for M1917 revolvers, at least on Colts since the .45 ACP case is only really held in the chamber by the half moon clips? Could my clip have caused this? I noticed a burr on one of the teeth supporting this case that would have raised it slightly on one side

My M1905 bayonet is older than any of my M1903s and yet the fit gets progressively tighter the newer the rifles are. One of the 1960s production M1917 bayonets would probably be in the best condition with the least wear.

I have heard some mixed things about these, but it seems to mostly revolve around Century and Navy, which improperly heat treated the steel, causing it to end up rather soft and prone to malfunctions. I don't think that is true of the version I have, but if it were, I don't know what I would be paying to replace the slide with something more durable - or if it is worth the money to do any restoration work on this thing. I don't care about the scratches on the grip, but may look into having the barrel re-blued, as there's a bald spot on the top where it's exposed by the slide. Leads me to believe it's been fired a lot, which I think is a good sign.

I tried whiting (calcium carbonate + acetone + saran wrap) but it wasn't pulling much out in ~1hr I had it soaking; the color only really changed at the endgrain. The wood suffers from both oil and dirt, and to be honest, I think used motor oil was applied to this gun liberally (thanks, India). I need to clean both the oil and dirt out of the wood which isn't easy; I've used acetone, dawn powerwash spray, Murphy's Oil Soap, plastic scrubbers, magic eraser, hot water, you name it. Can't use ammonia; it darkens wood. The best was a long acetone bath but gallons of acetone for a rifle stock is $$$ and flammable as fuck and then you're left with dirty ass acetone. Gallons of it. And that shit goes right through nitrile gloves like it's a sponge. I finally tried something that I heard of long ago (and recently reminded of on a forum), TSP. Not alternative, the real shit. Made a warm bath up and soaked a handguard in it for a couple minutes. Wore thick nitrile gloves. Don't you know it, that stuff made the water brown like the acetone used to turn when I was running tests. Used a magic eraser and that thing turned near black as it scraped gunk out of the pores and grain. Looked into it and I should probably also use soap with it to make it even more effective. Downside is it's very basic.>The pH of a 1% solution is 12 (i.e., very basic), and the solution is sufficiently alkaline to saponify grease and oils.But it seems to not damage the wood easily unlike the classic "throw sum EZ Off oven cleaner on that bitch" where everyone ends up with this bleached white chalky looking sad-ass stock at the end. Oh also, you probably want to limit use of this stuff or use all of your mix on multiple projects at once because it going down the drain into the rivers or into water on your property is like dumping fertilizer down the drain; algae and shit like that loves it.

This is the only other gun I own besides my basic ar15 so I don't know much of anything about the gun collecting world, but I love this thing so freaking much. I've shot it a couple times and it was a pain to figure out how to aim with the "mira a sfioro" aiming style and it being zerod for 300m, but I eventually got hits on paper lol. I completely have the gun collecting bug now tho and really want to get the Carcano carbine and cavalry carbine to "complete" the set.

These receivers worked perfectly fine so long as they were only under stress along the axes that they were designed for: each of the low-number M1903 receivers that failed in service had survived a 140% proof charge when the barrel was fitted to the receiver. Some may have survived multiple proof loads if the receiver was ever fitted with a new barrel. The reason rifles started blowing up during WW1 was the influx of much lower-quality ammunition with much higher failure rates compared to pre-war ammo. This ammo then remained in government inventory for the next decade or so because the Gov't bought so much for the war and was too cheap to buy newer ammo. Once that defective ammo was mostly run out of the system the incidents declined. Minimize that risk by making sure your headspace is within spec and use ammunition of good quality. Wear your PPE.

Front band for my Ross came in from Canada yesterday and I FINALLY had time to actually trim the wood pieces down and splice this bitch. Never done anything like this before. Used 2 wood dowels and glue. If that doesn’t end up working I’ll have to come up with something else. My holes were just a hair off so under the band you can tell the splices don’t line up perfect, but it looks fine with the band on. I’ll give it a day or 2 for the glue to set then I’ll start coating it with BLO. I was trying to get the front band perfectly straight before drilling the hole for the screw, and looking down the muzzle end I can tell the stock has a slight curve in the butt stock area. Makes me wonder how many surplus rifles are like that. I’ve never inspected any of my rifle stocks that closely to see if the wood is perfectly straight. The action fits in the stock perfect, so who knows if the curve was from manufacturing or if it just warped a little over time.

A question for the reloaders here. Specifically BP early metallic cartridges. is Pyrodex a good enough substitute? this would be using reformed or new brass. similar are the ratios about the same? Example, for a BP trapdoor load, is 70gr of Pyrodex sufficient or comparable? similarly for the ~86 or so gr for 11mm Gras and that era of Bp metallic surp.

Don't bother with breeches, those only work with tall-shaft jackboots (finnish square-toed ones, or soviet officer khromoviye) while straight pants can be worn with any neutral-looking black or dark brown ankle boots without looking farby.Hikishop wool M36 tunics have weird cut (shoulders too wide, chest too tight, waistline too high and it widens like a skirt from waist down to fit a wheelbarrow-sized beer gut) but they work good enough if you're not too tall, and it's not like you have any better option anyway. It may be a good idea to buy 1 size bigger jacket - 2 sizes bigger if you're tall. Buttons look bad but easy to fix - take them off, rattlecan them with medium grey or greenish-gray paint ant stitch them back on.Hiki makes finnish uniforms in 2 shades - light grey and dark grey. The light gray is bit too light and dark gray bit too dark compared to the mean shade of finnish wartime uniform colors but both are passable and fit within the observed spectrum. I encourage you to get a matching set of pants and jacket, as the "slightly mismatched wartime look" is hard to pull off using hiki repros. Hiki does improve on the materials and cut from time to time so a fresh batch should be better then what I bought few years ago (namely the dark wool got a bit lighter in more recent batches).Don't bother with hikishop m/39 fur hats, originals made in the 80s are at finnish milsurp shops (like swat.fi) for ~20 euros plus shipping and they look and fit better. You will need a cockade pin for it, hiki repros are okay.If you get the hikishop belt, for the love of God, grease the hell out of it and wear it in your jeans for some time. Straight from factory it's too light-colored (practically shines) and dry as a girl forced to visit a model railroad convention.Summer hats and jackets are a topic for another day. Have fun.

>>65392190Thinking I just drill a hole in front face of the original trigger, put a small rod or hex bit in it and it'll be able to press down on the rear of the ar15 trigger. Once have length measure out, drill a hole in side of the Hotchkiss trigger to pin the bar/hex bit in place.

Need to lift up on rear of the ar15 trigger, but the original trigger wants to push down.Probably few more iterations of the trigger pack and will have it good enough for release of a v1 and then make a v2 in few months after get feedback for modifications.
