I have two 9mm handguns and regularly train and stock up on ammo. What makes .45 popular in 2026? I get that if you already always trained with it, or were issued it,sort of 'grandfathered in' to using it for whatever reason. But what would make a first time handgun buyer actually choose .45 nowadays? I just don't get it.

I like .45. It's America's caliber. It's a descent of the Colt Walker .44 which was one of the most influential handguns ever. I like the muzzle flash it makes.

None.

If the gun you want only comes in .45 or the best version of it is in .45 (usp). Otherwise no, and I would not suggest it to anyone. Not because it's bad but because it's less efficient than 9mm.

guns with finishes that don't flake off, like bluing or metal treatments where the color rubs off.

So I looked up New York v Magliato and it turns out the case is the same as Soon Ja Du where the legal strategy was to convince the jury that the shooting was accidental but this essentially pleading guilty to manslaughter so these examples don't even pertain to self defense but of course lead exposed Boomers would misinterpret all of this as "weapon customisation = assured conviction". The actual lesson is ALWAYS CLAIM SELF DEFENSE.

I really did not like my PX4 .45, the longer grip is awkward, the rotating barrel does not seem to tame the recoil of .45 like it tames .40 or 9mm +P. Maybe if I had a red dot cut PX4 .45 I’d like it but I’ve gone off the deep end and only shoot 1911/2011s now except for my beloved PX4 compact. I tried to shoot my full size PX4s and I just was not interested in them. I even have a inox G-SD, I don’t like shooting it, I think it’s because of the Wolff progressive spring that LTT experimented in. Feels sluggish when I like snappy.

I do have to say it has a much better DA trigger than the USP though.

Check out a variety of .45s. I went through the "1911 is the best handgun ever" phase, and they're sweet shooters, but you eventually learn what many thousands before you have learned: The 1911 is inherently an unreliable design. Clearing malfunctions all the time and throwing away mangled brass isn't fun. The Glock 21 is another popular option, and I love mine, but it's just a Glock so it's not the most fun. But this S&W 4516 made me fall in love with .45 and helped me realize that the cartridge doesn't have to be held back by the worship of an ancient handgun that impresses noobs at the gun counter, but will always fall short of modern reliability standards.

>Can't aim for shit with my stock G17
did some digging
Glock 17 Gen5 is sighted for combat hold???
this explains why I shoot so fucking low all the time
just googling how to properly aim a Glock never told me to check for center or combat hold

I think I will just swap the stock plastic sights
at 15 meters distance the front sight fully covers the black inner ring of the target and I can't see shit
for 7 meters it might be fine but I can't even image shooting 25 meters with the factory sights

or is it really just some hardcore skill issue?
>>
>>65327553
you might be shooting low because your trigger finger brushes against your supporting palm when shooting. this happened to me and it was making my shots drop almost a foot at 7yds. it was nearly imperceptable to the instructor at the time who damn near had to pull out a magnifying glass to see what the issue was since my stance and grip were both fine

From what I know, people who compete bullseye use adjustable sights mostly. They use the elevation adjustment to make it so their sights have a 6 o clock hold, where they line up the sights at the bottom edge of the black bullseye. Much easier than a tip or combat hold

Or like everyone else just get a red dot and put the dot where you want the bullets to go.

Not a good idea for a new gun owner imo. The two reasons to get into .45 are that you've already been shooting for a while and want to shoot something different than 9mm or have big hands and a double stack .45 feels better than a double stack 9mm. It's not as size/weight/cost efficient as 9mm so unless you WANT a .45 then don't get one. I guess you could also make the argument of getting into .45 as a gateway to .45 super or .460 rowland but that's really a whole other can of worms.

>>65327553
figure out if you're inaccurate or precise first
you should be able to put five rounds in the same hole at 2-3 yards untimed slowfire. If you can't, your trigger control is bad
if you can, get a diamond or grid target and aim dead center. the difference between combat and center hold shouldn't be enough that you're getting this bugged by it at like 15 yards so there's a high likelihood you're jerking or anticipating.

>I shoot further than that.
well i hope so, but that's not the point
the purpose of the 1-3 yard close range slowfire drill is to isolate your pistol from distance and mechanical accuracy as variables to confirm your trigger control
Every pistol will mechanically be able to make a single ragged hole at 2 yards, and if it doesn't, the problem is not your pistol
if your pistol is shooting low because you have an uncontrolled flinch or anticipation, you will not be able to put five rounds in a single hole, because the flinch or anticipation is an uncontrolled movement
>The USP is not practical for EDC in the Big 26 and therefore not a good first.
if you are big enough it absolutely is, and a USP9 is good for first time owners because its recoil is not excessive for new shooters
I carry my LTT 92 every day which is dimensionally larger than a USP in every way that matters for carry

I just bought my first gun (glock 16 gen 6) and the manual suggests that I should clean it before firing. That seems gay. Is this true or is it just them covering their ass?
>>
>>65327871
no, 7 yards is far enough away that things like focus, mechanical accuracy, and other muscular shit can introduce variation in the results other than isolating trigger finger problems.
it's a very cheap diagnostic tool that I use as a warmup sometimes, also excellent for working through DA pull fuckiness:
step 1: draw a crosshair or a dot on a sheet of paper
step 2: at minimum but non-contact distance (i use 2 yards) without correcting for HOB/parallax/zero, fire five rounds at the dot/crosshair as slow as you need to
step 3: confirm group
it should be a ragged hole or the same hole. if it's not, then you should be trying to fix whatever's going on between you and the gun before blaming the gun for anything

The order of operations that i've found for teaching shooters having a problem with "bullet not go where want" is:
>2 yard trigger precision drill
if failed, dryfire, coin-on-front-sight dryfire, etc. because the problem is their finger
>precision drill walked out in 5 yard increments
if accurate but not precise, problem is probably in their eyes or stability because increased distance decreases depth of field; try a red dot and target focus, and do sirt/mantisx dryfire and reinforce staging trigger and stabilizing the gun
if more precise than accurate, problem is probably in the hands and got missed at close range; surprise drills and no-trigger shooting plus dryfire to remedy
>bill drill at 7 yards
identifies recoil control problems
if low but relatively precise, cadence/tempo drills to remedy
if off-center, slapping trigger or jerking, return to dyfire, cadence/tempo drills
if imprecise but accurate, do farmers carries and learn how to grip the gun like a man

>>
>>65327924
>That seems gay. Is this true or is it just them covering their ass?
I don't clean my guns before taking them out for the first time just because I have an unfounded theory completely without evidence that the first 200 rounds burnish the wear parts together and expedite any break-in that needs to happen
it's not gonna hurt the gun to shoot it dry, glocks come with factory lube and some copper anti-seize on it, it's not like a car where running it without oil is a cheatcode to being out $14k
after the first ~500 rounds I'll take it completely down and give it a white glove clean and do my normal lube/grease shit to it
>>65327935
i'm strongly of the opinion that every shooter needs two foundational experiences to cross the idiot gap:

USP, brand name “no compromise” unless you use a suppressor that was not approved. It’s “bomb proof” (doesn’t actually survive bombs), it’s super reliable (the USP isn’t the gun that passed all the uber reliability tests, that was the MK23).

Me and my old man are the only guys in our bullseye league still shooting irons.
6 oclock is 100% better for bullseye than a combat hold or splitting the target.
In my experience a dot for most shooters is like a free 10-12 points. Once a guy switches over scores almost instantly go up.

Speaking of bullseye i am toying with the idea of getting either a mk23 or usp match/expert. 1911s are the gold standard for .45 pistols but i just want something different. Ive heard they are both stupid accurate but for that price i would expect anything to be.

Pic related are my current bullseye guns.
The 645 isnt really a target pistol but its what ive got.
>>
>>65327752
the inaccuracy is getting better
from low left more and more to low mid
but in general I am always off int he same region

my issue with the aim is, that from 7 to 10 to 15 meters the point of impact is getting lower and lower
I also need to get my eyes checked since left/right is kinda off
>>65327798
shouldn't you shoot lower with higher front sights?
or do I think wrong
>>
>>65327960
if you're allowed to draw from the holster, buy a protimer, set it to random delay and do draw-to-first-shot drills on a standard NRA bullseye until you're absolutely sick of them. Your time and groups will really quickly expose problems with your grip
i would recommend using an OWB holster on a stiff belt since the purpose isn't really working out your concealed draw or anything, but just spitballing, the times to beat starting palms-to-thighs are:
>competition OWB holster (i.e. open top kydex): 2s minimum, 1.5s adequate, 0.9 time to beat
>Lv2 retention holster: 2s minimum, 1.5s adequate, 1.0s TTB
>IWB from concealement: 3s minimum, 2.25s adequate, 2.0s ideal, 1.5s TTB
if you can't draw, start from low ready 45 degrees pointed at the deck

aforementioned 2yd precision drill is also just great to do every range trip

>>65327981
would I recommend a USP as a first pistol? Probably not really for various reason
would I advise someone against it? No because it's completely fine as a pistol and does everything every other gun does.
if someone has an extra $300 to burn and it fits their hand, it's none of my business what they do with that money
>why has the USP overtaken the PX4 when its more expensive and less good?
the PX4 was never popular in the US until ernie started working on them because rotating barrels are alien technology to americans and very few people realized that the PX4 had basically the exact same trigger system as the 92 series and thus they failed to see the headroom available to make it into a nice gun
incompatibility with 92 mags also probably caused a lot of people to just go "nah fuck that"
>>
>>65328031
He’s doing one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. He’s purposely not lining up the front sight and holding it higher, so it’s like he has a lower rear sight.

He’s cargo culting that red dot users are actually faster because of the “height over bore” of the red dot sight instead of everything else.
>>
>>65328031
if you went from shooting low left to just low after the 2yd precision drill, you probably fixed something weird happening with your finger and the trigger, but still uncorrectably low even with a dead center combat hold indicates you're probably anticipating.I have a hard time believing that factory glock sights are off that much if you're on a dead center combat hold
outside the range, do front-sight-coin dryfire
on the range as you walk it out if you're still low in the above scenario, grip the gun well (you can try dominant hand push, support hand pull), let the break surprise you, and allow the gun to recoil without limpwristing it
>>65328050

>>
>>65328046
>if you can't draw, start from low ready 45 degrees pointed at the deck

>>
>>65327924
Cleaning a firearm is one of the easiest and relaxing things you can do with it. Do you believe giving it its first field strip lube sesh is a conspiracy from Big Glawk to ... to what exactly?
>>
>>65328026
Unless your 645 is clapped tf out it's going to be as or more accurate than a mk23 or a cheap 1911. I'd say you should get an optics cut 1911 unless you think the mk23 is just too cool.
>>
>>65328026
>>65328066
the MK23 is not a good bullseye gun for a variety of reasons unrelated to its mechanical accuracy or sights, which the USP match/expert suffers from as well
it's absolutely a fun, stupid gun though
I have two MK23s, one LTT optics cut/TJ, the other manufactured circa 2011 (IIRC). Their triggers are the exact same in feel, and I would not classify them as particularly enjoyable to drive max performance out of. A USP expert might get there with a greyguns short reset kit and flat trigger, since my P30 in that configuration feels better to try to get long distance single-action hits with.
that said, I've consistently rung an IPSC steel at 100 yards with the ACRO MK23 with what felt like indirect fire, so it's not like you can't do well with it.

I recommend grabbing it from the bench, going from low ready means you already have a grip on it and you're not practicing getting a firing grip on a timer. You will be slow though as grabbing off the bench is awkward.
>>
>>65328098
>>65328060
yeah I'm rethinking the low ready
I think the best compromise for not being able to draw might be to start one-handed in semi-retention with your firing elbow bent at like 45-90 degrees to keep the 180 and avoid pissing off the RSO, shoulders relaxed, with support hand palm flat on your support thigh (or on your belt working the timer)
that way you're at least simulating the pressout and presentation even if you're missing the snatch/scoop of the drawstroke and have a consistent start position to get times off of
the biggest thing from the video is figuring out the thumbs, which the above should hopefully address

The 645 in really good shape, and for the level i am shooting at its adequate. I feel like i need to spend a pretty penny to get something noticeably better. I shoot high 260s low 270s with the model 41.
Closer to a 255 average centerfire.

A few rounds through these custom 1911s makes me want to max out my credit card though. Theyre so nice. My father has a custom colt gold cup from the 80s and it is mile away the best feeling gun i have ever shot.

The cool factor of the mk23 is part of it but i know a 1911 with a dot is the correct answer.
A mk23 with an acro is good looking gun but so are any of the 1911s.

>I recommend grabbing it from the bench
Not allowed in my range, due to retards putting holes in the bench. Most of the bays have bench holes like the one my bay had.
>>
>>65328113
Not one of these fags but the MK23 has a trigger that leaves much to be desired, you can upgrade it a little but the USP takes trigger upgrades much better, and is still an excellent .45 with the same look you want.

Bruh, then yea low ready is your best bet. And find another range.

>the biggest thing from the video is figuring out the thumbs, which the above should hopefully address
Should I just let my thumb float and be done with it? I noticed I readjust my thumb only when I'm thinking if I'm firing too fast. The tactile reset makes me slow down.
>>65328120
All ranges within two hours from me forbid """rapid firing""" due to glonk shooters (it's always glonk shooters) spraying down range and flagging everybody after doing so. Unless you're in a class or if you have an instructor with you.

>Should I just let my thumb float and be done with it?
for semiautomatics, point both thumbs at the target, in contact with the frame. your support thumb should be roughly above and slightly forward of the trigger. For my hand size, my support thumb sits on top of the takedown lever cutout on 20/21 sized frames, and just in front of it on the 19. my firing hand thumb then sits on top of the most proximal knuckle of the support hand thumb, basically picrel

Counter to what the other dude said, don't do anything with your thumbs, make them hang in the air clear of the gun

Ben has a series of videos arguing with people on the internet about it
https://youtu.be/7fYHBgdupbc

Or it could be in contact with the frame, just don't do anything with it. thumb pressure, thumb pointing, to me is counter productive. The less you do the easier it is to be consistent.

I was testing if the front post could be used as a bead sight or "caveman red dot" at seven yards but there wasn't enough height over bore to achieve this. Of course PX4 anon is going to misrepresent all of this because he's one of the Burtsmen.

>bead sight or "caveman red dot"
this is impossible because irons only create a discernable point of aim when totally aligned. if three-dot/notch-bucket iron sights aren't in alignment, they create a point of aim that's invisible, unmeasurable, and hanging out in space
a bead sight is useful on shotguns primarily as a reference point after you've patterned the gun on a patterning board. You're discounting that most bead sights are on 20+ inch barrels and typically with ribs for alignment, where the point of impact is a cone.
red dots and holographic sights work in a fundamentally different way by projecting the point of aim at infinity, the tradeoff to mechanical irons being the existence of parallax
the only way irons can vaguely function like a red dot is with diopter/aperture rear sights because the aperture functionally becomes the entrance pupil to the optical system
>>65328212
the most important thing is palm and finger contact with the gun, don't consciously place your thumbs against the frame or keep them away
if your grip works for you, you don't HAVE to mess with it. I wasn't implying that you should be consciously directing your thumbs anywhere, just that they should be both out of the way of the gun and your grip, the usual direction being forward and overlapped

Given the poor lighting of an indoor range, I imagine that would still be difficult to target focus with. At this point, I might be better off aiming over the sights and shooting predictively (instinctually)

How strange that they don't prominently list that anywhere. Despite doing so for other products. It's not on the web page. Not on the box. Not in the manual. Not on the optic. Impressive response time tho, love Burris customer service

They probably have more lax manufacturing origin laws in Germany. But it's still odd that they mention NOTHING. My T5Xi box cannot boast "Made in the USA" despite every single part being manufactured in the US minus the lenses from Schott, so they had to put "assembled" instead. The MPS doesn't even do that much, which makes me think it's not even assembled in Germany or the US from global components, despite what the CS drone says. I couldn't tell you how many times I've been misled or even intentionally lied to by gun company CSs. Don't even get me started on the "two weeks" meme

You can try to bore a single hole at 7 yards, it's just less diagnostically useful if there's something wrong with your hands on the gun versus a trigger issue

>Given the poor lighting of an indoor range, I imagine that would still be difficult to target focus with
aperture sights are better than irons for partial and low lighting (i.e. less than full sun but not total darkness) because they increase depth of field

I'm having trouble understanding what is wrong with simply aligning the sights and covering the target (if combat hold)
