I just got me an AR-15 but I hate keeping it clean and maintaining it and all that shit because of all the tiny pieces and what not. I seen in tv shows and movies they got guys putting guns in barrels filled with oil and I figured that's a good idea for keeping it cleaned and oiled. Big thing is what kind of oil should I fill the drum with? I know gun oil's the obvious choice but the good shit comes in them tiny little bottles so I'd have to get a LOT of the stuff to fill a 16 gallon drum. Would motor oil be a decent substitute? I'd still need like 40 bottles of penz oil but that's still better than having to buy like 100+ bottles of Remington oil to fill it.
you NEED to use avocado oil. no exceptions
cosmoline for long term storage, motor oil is fine for a few years, don't use rem oil for anything, they put forever chemicals in the form of teflon in it that will bioaccumulate in your body.
You don't need to maintain it as strict as you might think. You can always pay someone else to do it too.
You don't want oil absolutely everywhere on your gun.Just buy a spray can of mil spec Break Free CLP (it's teflon free nowadays if you're concerned about >>65333614) and spray it into the action area and on the BCG every 500 or so rounds if you're feeling that lazy. It's not ideal but it'll keep the gun running more or less.
>>65332899The only guns I would fire while dripping with 10W Hydraulic oil (cheapest oil on planet) would be the following handguns Colt 1873 M1917 M1911 because they are hella stronk and use low pressure straight walled ammo. Everything else is going to require A PATCH PULLED THROUGH THE FIRING CHAMBER AND BARREL immediately before shooting. Be smart do this instead, Lazy Man: Mix 100ml "Extreme Pressure Chassis Grease fortified with Molybdenum Disulfide" (aka catshit) diluted and strenuously blended with 250ml Unleaded Pump gas. Wear gloves and SLATHER THAT COCKSUCKER WITH THE SHIT WHILE WORKING EVERY LAST PART THAT WIL MOVE (safety, decocker, bolt, F.Assist = EVERYTHING. Run a cashitted patch up and down the bore one million strokes while AVOIDING GETTING ANY IN THE FIRING CHAMBER. Now - ensuring the A) chamber and B) barrel are A)Dry and B) Dry-with-moly-film RUN A WHOLE BUNCH OF AMMO LIKE 100 ROUNDS THROUGH THE BITCH WHILE DRIPPING WITH CAT-DIARRHEA. Now swish the weapon around in a 5 gal bucket of Unleaded to remove the diluted grease. Okay NOW it is lubed, Good to go 1000 to 2000 rounds, a least. Let it dry thoroughly by leaving in the sun. To prevent rust get 50ml of solid Carnuba Wax and strenuously blend it with 250ml of either toluene, xylene, acetone or turpentine.Slather the entire gun with it and shake then blow with compressed air to remove all but a film of diluted Carnuba. Let that dry in the sun.DONE. Save some diluted Carnuba to patch the chamber and barrel bore when done firing.I would then just shoot the fucker all I wanted, treat the chamber and bore and wipe a little on any parts got hot enough to burn the wax completely off. DONE. The anon at 65333651 has the next-best scheme but mine is well-nigh perfect-but-for-the-one-time-effort-involved.
>>65333632Yup. Call around to gun stores and take bids to have it cleaned and oiled. There are those of us that LIKE cleaning weapons and have proper tools and workbench for the job.Still - for the Love of God, Colt, Browning and Stoner - run a dry patch in the chamber and bore before firing that bottlenecked high pressure & velocity bitch of a 5.56 x 45 "cat ridge" right next to your face.
