What was the fanciest army ever? Bonus points for being so fancy that it gets in the way of your military prowess.
>>65354108Just do a Google search
Way too vast to ever pick one. Roman, wehrmacht/SS, Aztec (less "uniform" more regalia), gilded Renaissance armor (again often customized), samurai..Perhaps The practicality of modern attire is less fanciful than what you saw in the past. Also some may seem purely utilitarian because it's a another culture, yet would be considered beautiful through its respective lens.

>>65354161>>65354108>less "uniform" more regaliaIDK what the formal definition of "uniform" is, but I would say Aztec military equipment seem to fit what i'd consider the definition to be, depending on what pieces of equipment/garments you're talking about.Tlahuiztli warsuits (technically, "Tlahuiztli" seems to refer to any piece of worn military equipment, or the full combo of different equipment worn together, but many modern sources use Tlahuiztli specifically in regards to the full body warsuits), Ehuatl skirted warjackets, back mounted banners, and even certain jewelry or specific hairstyles were things that were variously awarded or exclusive to specific military titles, orders, offices, or ranks (The Mexica of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan seems to have BOTH had a normal rank structure or even multiple rank pathways; special awarded titles, which sometimes were but may not have always also been permanent offices for generals, commanders or captains; and there may have been military guilds/orders. How those all intersect isn't entirely clear), where wearing those things indicated those ranks, offices, titles etc, with certain banners, shield emblems, or tlahuiztli, ehuatl and shield etc colors also indicating unit divisionAn outfit representing your affiliation with a organization/institution, and/or your position within it in terms of rank or department/unit, is pretty much how i'd define a uniform, the main/only difference being that uniforms in my mind are typically shared across the whole organization/institution with indications of rank or unit usually being things like badges on the same shared uniform, wheras within the Mexica system, Tlahuiztli vs Ehuatl vs potentially other options were entirely different types of base garments, and lower ranking soldiers didn't wear anything like that at all, just a breechcloth and/or the Ichcahuipilli gambeson vests/tunics (which higher status soldiers wore beneath the Tlahuiztli, Ehuatl etc)1/2
>>65357470>>65354161>>65354108Cont:The other way they'd be different from uniforms is that while certain warsuit/warjacket designs, shield emblems, banners, jewelry, or color variations of those things may SUGGEST or be exclusive to specific ranks, orders, offices, titles etc or specific unit divisions, that does not mean that all individuals of a given category ALWAYS wore those garments/status indicators. This is something that seems to trip a lot of people up, because say the Codex Mendoza seems to show a simple, clean visualization of rank progression for normal soldiers and warrior priests separately, but in reality, rank structure might have branched out and those just show one path each, and some of the ranks shown are really offices or special titles or orders, and simply because the former pathway shows, say, the soldier who had captured 3 enemies soldiers with Ichcahuipilli and a butterfly style back banner, did not mean that ALL soldiers of a 3-captive rank wore butterfly banners: It just means that they COULD or SOMETIMES wore such banners, and other times they wore other combinations of equipment. If people are interested I can dump/post a fuckhuge writeup my friend did explaining Mexica military structure on discord a few weeks ago, he is also working on a part 2 of that.2/3
>>65357501>>65357501>>65354108cont:All that said, yes, Aztec and other Central Mexican military equipment should absolutely be in the running for the most fancy, opulent, and garish examples of military garments around: Full body suits and jackets/tunics with skirts made from tens of thousands of feathers, the mosaic of feathers (which also covered the fronts of higher status shields and the outside surface of helmets, both of which also had plates/inlays of precious metals and precious stones) forming patterns and emblems, with the feathers potentially being color changing and iridesecent (as seen in feather mosaic "paintings" they also made, see pic), plus jade, obsidian, turquoise, shell, gold, silver etc pieces of jewelry being wornHonestly the Landsknecht >>65354180 >>65354492 >>65355720 are some of the only other historical soldiers I think that give them competition

>>65357578We have hundreds of extant examples of the same technique being applied to "paintings/tapestries", as I posted in >>65357504, though. Plus there are 4 surviving extant shields, see picNone of the helmets, warsuits, and warjackets survive today, but we have descriptions and depictions of them not just from the Spanish in Mexico, but also from people back in Europe as hundreds were shipped over to Europe at the time and were mentioned by Spanish court historians as well as visitors to museum exhibits of them in Europem, and they get mentioned in some shipment inventory logs For example, here is Albrecht Durer (one the most famous German artists at the time) describing some he saw in display in Brussels:>I saw the things which have been brought to the King from the new land of gold (Mexico), a sun all of gold a whole fathom broad, and a moon all of silver of the same size, also two rooms full of the armor of the people there, and all manner of wondrous weapons of theirs, harness and darts, very strange clothing, beds, and all kinds of wonderful objects of human use, much better worth seeing than prodigies. These things were all so precious that they are valued at 100,000 florins. All the days of my life I have seen nothing that rejoiced my heart so much as these things, for I saw amongst them wonderful works of art, and I marveled at the subtle [ingenuity] of men in foreign lands. >>65354161The average roman soldier was equipped with extremely practical and utilitarian gear for the time. I’m going to go for a different answer and say the Austrian army of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. They had this impressive white uniform, which could actually be maintained in the field by covering up dirt with white pipe clay, so they’d be this wall of men in all white uniforms. However, they spent almost the entire period (1792-1814) joining almost every war against France and getting the shit kicked out of them. Some recruits were literal peasant conscripts who had never held a gun before entering battle, and their supply situation before Austerlitz was so fucked, the Archduke had to issue an order limiting ammo for target practice to 6 musket balls per soldier.
>>65360610Did your basic bitch line units even do target practice or was it literally just live fire drills as a group against some wooden boards or straw dummies
>>65358282She a cute
>>65360681Honestly, target practice is probably the wrong term, I was going off of memory. With line infantry of the period, their standard weapon was very inaccurate. It would have been more about weight of fire and tempo of volleys. So, more like live fire drills, maybe not even bothering with dummies or boards
>>65357630>For example, here is Albrecht Durer (one the most famous German artists at the time) describing some he saw in display in BrusselsSucks that he didn't make any sketches.

>>65361136Yeah, it's a shame, they would have been amazing references. Some other artists in Europe did, but mostly during the 18th and 19th centuries, by which point a lot of the armor and clothing had already been lost. Those sketches do show some jewelry and stone mosaics that we wouldn't otherwise have records of, but most of the pieces in question are still accounted for today in museums, the ones that were lost since they got sketch mostly seem to have been causalities of the World WarsThere is one Prehispanic feather mosaic piece that survived in addition to the shields in >>65357630 and a chalice cover (which I didn't post pictures of), which was a breechcloth(?) covered in feather mosaic, and that was also a victim of WW2, see pic

>>65359784Based, keep it up.
>>65355964If ever the opportunity presents itself, I would encourage all /k/ommandos to visit the museum of the French army at Les Invalides in Paris. There are hundred of examples of their 18th and 19th century uniforms in almost perfect condition, and it's remarkable. There are cavalry saddles draped in the pelts of leopards, there are hats with plumes of peackock or ostritch, there are arms and armor engraved and plated with every precious metal. What a wondrous place it is.And of course the tomb of a short man of no particular significance.
