Goto a fluff page for a modern body armor brand and they'll throw every "this used to be just science fiction" bit of manufacturing jargon at you. Start from there.Your skin contact layer will be thermally-responsive, moisture-wicking, and sensor-laced to ensure you can march in equatorial sunlight longer than Crusaders. Then whatever combination of shear-thickening fluids, nanoceramic sharksuit fibers, and plastic hockey padding your little old heart desires.The outer layer's got be be flexible and extremely hard. Generally, the harder a material the more brittle, but armor has the advantage over a blade in that regard because it can be designed with a bit of flex. Fit graphene over high-quality modern metal scales. Repeated hits to one scale may break the hard layer, but that will not compromise the entire area the way it would a continuous plate. Replacing a scale carrier would be far simpler than rebuilding a cuirass. It would be ideal if the STF layer could be refrigerated or heated as necessary, because additional thermoregulation is always nice.
