I'm in the process of building a loaner NV capable gun. Would you guys go 11.5" or 16", I don't plan on taking it out of my state and doing a form 1 is cool with me. I usually fall into the 14.5" camp but this is a loaner and back up for me if I go to a class.

11.5
if its a night gun you're not going past 1-200
it needs a can on it to suppress the flash, which adds length and weight, and an IR pointer, which adds weight
if you added those things to a 16" it becomes unwieldy and heavy and you don't need the velocity for hipshooting at whatever you're hitting with the ir laser pointer
and 16" guns with cans a just a 1x red dot look weird, 11.5" guns with a 1x red dot look normal

Would you reckon an Armaspec SMB H3 would cycle with a cassette style FRT out of an 11.5?
>>
>>65430929
I don't see why not. I've never used those type of buffers, but if it really is an H3, or at least an approximation of the weight, then it should be fine.
>>
>>65430938
I should get an H3 buffer before tungsten triples in price but the Armaspec H3 equivalent was still about $55.
>>
>>65430929
as long as the gun is pushing enough gas to cycle an equivalent spring and buffer, yes. Those captured buffer systems function the same as a spring/buffer normally does just in a neater package.

If it were an AR9 you would run into some potential compatibility issues but on a regular AR it should be no issue shooting an intermediate cartridge.

Lower I just put together.
Might trade the stock in for the QD version.

>>
>>65431057
Had a Griffin Arms MK2 I wanted to put together but the OD green doesn't match the red tinted "brown" annodizing.
Might try a rifle length tube and a nicer two stage trigger on that though
>>
>>65431052
>>65431057
The secret to the captured buffer system install is to remove the buffer retainer pin and hammer. Makes it was easier to do. Since you have a cassette trigger, you'd need to basically take the entire lower apart but it will save you the headache.

I don't think my buffer is going to ever come out of my AR9SD now that it's in, working that motherfucker in with the ejector sucked.
>>
>>65431082
The roller delayed buffer especially is a real bitch because it refuses to compress
>>
>>65431082
Yeah I was about to take the trigger out until it managed to magically slide itself in when I applied pressure at the correct angle.
It's gonna stay there Im hoping it'll cycle most of my uppers it'll be my dedicated FRT lower.
Depends on if the captured buffer cycles properly.
Really wish I got the QD version of that stock though.
It was actually a bitch to put together the buffer retainer kept locking up because the buffer tube would cant when I tightened the castle nut.
Had to hold the tube while I tightened it
Should've just picked up a new tube but I had a PSA one sitting around.

Still don't know if its worth putting an FRT of any variety on a "fighting rifle" but I really hope I can get one to cycle subsonic .300s reliably.
That just be the coolest shit ever if I can get my .300 to cycle subs through a can with an FRT reliably.
I'd strongly consider dropping 5.56 over it even if .300 just werked 100% of the time.

on some platforms, you have to dremel a bit of the upper receiver material away so the Atrius or ARC-Fire doesnt get caught between the upper and the bolt. I've put around 2000 rounds already through this lever and its been fine. I also shaved down the bottom of the Atrius lever so the trigger reset travel is only about a millimeter. There's videos how you're supposed to tweak the lever a bit by taking some material off. I can see why people dont want to do that.

Nice rifle. I'm kind of in the market for an Acog because I just want a different optic than red dot or LPVO - but between the battery one or the TA31 they all seem to (almost intentionally) have massive drawbacks.

From what I've seen the at muzzle suppression and the flash hiding isn't the best. It probably isn't terrible, and it is pretty light all things considered at 13oz (if that is even true) with the integrated mount.
My issue unironically is with a) how it looks, and b) the attitude of Sean Bernstein the le hecking tyfys vet turned I guess engineer/CAD monkey with respect to how it looks.
I commented on IG a while back being admittedly "aggressive" (no one knows you're a dog on the internet) complaining not only about their gay ugly external texture but about the tendency in general across various suppressor companies to do these gay faggot external textures. I ended up getting into it with Slade about objectivism and ART and beauty (I shit you not) and Sean was like "IT IS A UNIT SYMBOL YOU WOULDN'T GET IT" but also maintained that the "design" is functional and is repeated on the interior of the can and all in all the whole setup like a lot of can designs reeks of "engineers" who haven't actually done any real engineering and "designers" who haven't even read any Ayn Rand and insecure millenials who didn't grow up with the internet (if at all) and who can't take being called out on their shit (an external texture that is fucking ugly and has no point to it).

All of that combined with it not being really all that amazing...

That being said I think their mount design absolutely is neato and could be made into something legit cool that for me would kick me off YHM Kurz Ti... but that is yet to happen.
>>
>>65432006
The battery one is too heavy, but the non battery one also has issues with the reticle being too bright or something like that?
>>
>>65432022
>reticle being too bright or something like that?
In direct sunlight it can get blown out. Most people just put a strip of tape over the fiber optic and pull it back/push it forward as needed and as lighting conditions change.

nta but the only thing keeping me from a TA01 is that it's a nearly 40 year old optic that still costs a grand, pushing 1600 if you want to pair it with an RMR
At 600-700 bucks it's a no-brainer but fucking come on
>>
>>65432007
I’ve been told at the east valley tactical suppressor event by an employee that a lot of the excessively ugly patterns some companies use on the exterior of their suppressor slightly increases surface area for cooling and structurally allows them to use thinner walls. How true this is and how significantly it effects cooling sounds negligible to me. For all the shit CAT gets I like how they’re one of the few companies maintaining a clean appearance in the 3d printed can era.

You're doing it backwards but it looks like you're having fun and I suck at it too so I won't try to yuck your yum. You are inspiring to finally finish my own stock projects tho
>>
>>65432321
why's it backwards? if I don't have the holes to localize the action and the bottom metal, I wouldn't be able to line it up exactly where I want. I also wouldn't have a consistent reference point to use inletting blue to accurately whittle down the high spots with chisels and such
>>
>>65432334
Like I said I'm not going to yuck your yum and I'm no expert so I'm going to let you learn the hard way, but yeah you probably wanna inlet it before you finish shaping the recoil lug.

Lines > barrel channel > inletting > deck height > shaping > detailing. Is the usual order and glossing over the specific steps. There's a book calling Stockmaking that makes it stupid simple we basically followed in Stockmaking.

No yum yucking taken anon, this is my first time doing it so I'm open to suggestions. I'm loosely following a youtube series from some guy 15 years ago because I couldn't find anyone else going through the full process with hand tools.
The next step is going to be the lines though. I'm not entirely sure if I'll use something square to the board and outline the action or measure out from the centerline of those action holes and connect the dots but I'll figure something out
Once I do that I'll be waiting on the chisels I got off eBay, they're coming from Japan so it could be a few weeks. I'll use those to make a clean edge around the outline before I start chiseling and gouging.
I'm planning on just free floating the barrel since it's thick as fuck and heavy enough to probably not need any extra stability. I do want to keep it a very loose free float though in case I decide to epoxy bed everything at some point
I'll see if I can find a copy or pdf of that book somewhere

Why do people like tucked suppressors? The only upside I can think of is that since the handguard covers it, you're less likely to burn yourself with the suppressor. Otherwise its just more weight. I guess you can also mount a light/laser further up?

I just don't think that's true, it's nowhere near any trad baffle can I've shot and I've shot a few. Barrel is a 13.9 G$, H2A5 buffer and Tubb (RIP) AR10 flat spring with the eBCG. It's gassed as well as any adjustable gas block gamer gun, recoil and gas is simply not there. And you know what you can't tune out? Downrange signature reduction. Personally I think people have to keep trying to find something wrong with it so Ridgeback's marketing checks clear.

Imagine being so poor you bought an atrius instead of ASD and had to mod it.

Also imagine buying a non M16pocket lower and non M16 cut upper.

ASD is 100% the way to go.

My V1, which I later put on the milspec levers, then sold to my bud after recieving my V2.

V1 has around 1.5K no issues, V2 has 800 no issues.

Just threw in a H3 buffer Super 42 and called it a day on my roll your own.

ADM uppers and lowers are a direct fit.

Centurion 10 position Buffer Tube
Geissele Super 42 H3 buffer
Magpul ACS-L Stock (I like it, fight me bitch)
Originally had a M600DF that I sold once I finaly got nightvision. Overspent on the MAWL because I tried others and hated how they were high and wasn't going to go non LVPO because I am genetically fucked up in the eyes.

OH! Forgot that I did have some issues with my Original rail that led me to buy the Troy.

Overgassing a rifle by accident on a modified barrel nut with a piston system can bend the rod. ASK ME HOW I KNOW. So my Midwest Battle Rail with it's barrelnut got swapped with the only NOT BBC SIZED rail with Mlok and a milspec barrelnut that I found that would clear the piston.

I also ran the gasblock wide open and the extra support keeps the rod from jamming and bending

Also overtorqued the screws and it's holding zero. Funny.

Going piston AND suppresor had my hands tied.

Adams Arms which is the most reliable kit by simplicity needs a milspec barrel nut or milspec length barrel nut, or you can cut it down for clearance. It also needs enough space to clear the block. AND I wanted 7postion Mlok because I wasn't running nightvision yet so I had my OG weaponlight at the 2oclock to be best out of the way in both visibility AND resting against barriers.

Had a Midwest industries one on there and swapping my can between guns I may have forgot to cut the gas. The cut nut only supported the bushing on one side so the rod jammed open and she became a single shot.

It was either Adam Arms Chonky boy of a rail that they had at the time, or this.

And this HASN'T show me any POI shift on my MAWL so I really can't justify shopping for a new rail.

Especially since I live in foresty mountians of the sort where a 600y flat range to confirm zero out to is pretty much no existant and I actually have my rifle dialed out to that so I'm not taking anything fucking off that touches the barrel until it's worn out enough to throw a centurion one

(Since anything post 2015 noveske sucks due to john's death and QC crash. Fuck Private Equity)

Found a 2019 photo with some crayola's in markings because I wasn't sure if I'd like how it'd look.

>ASD is 100% the way to go.
like I said, I've put thousands of rounds already though Atrius and its fine. Though I will replace it with the superior ASD sometime. I saw Atrius for sale for around $100USD at my LGS and bought it on a whim. When people dont shave the upper a little bit, you'll get snap city. ASD ones snap too with the same exact problems.
>>65431821
>is there anything to convert my current trigger to an FRT or do you need a full new trigger assembly
Atrius and ARC-Fire just change out your safety lever. You can keep your trigger usually- unless its some weird ass match-grade cartridge weird shit. But even at that, similar triggers could still be used like certain 3.5lb Mimtac or Rave140 triggers. With some tweaking you can also use the Geissele ones.

If you use the latest ARC-Fire brand FRT, it states it is compatible with those. For Atritus, you'd want to buy the version called "G-Lever" that has an extra rail extension to support those. Either works, I would lean towards ARC-Fire for drop-in no hassle.

My eBay chisels haven't shipped yet so I'm taking my time trying to find a good way to make my outlines. I don't have a way to squarely trace the action so the only good lines (the width of the action and the tentative width of the stock) are the ones I measured from the holes I've drilled. Measuring the taper at the back of the action is going to suck ass so I figure if I just get a shallow recoil lug slot drilled out I can get a more accurate trace
Fun project though, the most wood working I've done is building my workshop table
