Final weight is 316 gn. Lot of variation, I need to work on getting better at casting.. using the heaviest weight for the load data and just dealing with the variation on the 313 gn rounds which seem to be the lightest…. Accuracy is gonna be interesting but this is more of a test for how these are gonna do in .454 casull…. Going to run them on lil gun, should top out at about 1320 fps per grt, which feels a little slow for .454 but it’s out of a 2.5 inch Alaskan, so that’s screaming for this round. Anyone have any recommendations for increasing hardness? Debating just biting the bullet (figuratively speaking) and ordering some pure antimony or linotype to mix with the lead I have. Water quenched these, still have about a week of cure time before I can get a good measure of their hardness with my Lee tester….
>>
Going to make some 8.6 creedmoor loads in QL just to see what you can get away with in a 10.5" barrel. I've never loaded for it but everyone seems to say that 12" is recommended

Anyone have any experience with Lee alox? Usually I’m doing big bullets, but I ordered some of this to try for 158 gn semi wadcutters for 38 special, maybe 357 depending on how well this keeps it from leading…

I think it's Matt's Bullets has the same mold.
I've shot a handful of those through my Win92, COAL was like 1.650 in the lower cannelure if I remember right. Looking at my notes says the allow they used was only good to 1400fps from the long barrel.

I make my own Dillon case lube by using 1 part liquid lanolin per 7-8 parts isopropyl alcohol (the higher the alcohol percentage the better) and use a spray pump. Coat them all with the spray bottle, let the alcohol evaporate for 5 minutes, never had a stuck case again. My problem is I tend to overdo it and the cases end up sticky, but I usually resize a big lot at a time and then tumble them in ground walnut with a homebrew case polish (nufinish and alcohol) to get them nice and shiny anyway.

I'm getting into reloading as a hobby and to shoot more. I've been doing lots of research over the past week and have a Lyman manual coming in. I want to reload 9mm, 45acp, and maybe 38spl down the road.

I've been seeing peoples' comparisons between all the machines and all their quirks. I was hoping to get opinions from anons with experience.

I'm technical/handy enough to work on my car and I like to think I'm not a complete dummy.

What do you guys think of between Lee Six Pack Pro 6000, Hornady LnL AP, or the Dillon 550C?

Are the turret presses like the Lee Classic/Ultimate Turret worth it or is output too slow? Midway shows so-so ratings, but amazon shows the classic turret press kit with high reviews.
>>
>>65447072
Turret presses were mostly obsoleted when QC bushings hit the market.
I'm a fan of the older RCBS progressives, especially the Piggyback.
For just starting out get one of the Lee auto-indexing turrets. Disable the auto index until you've got some experience.
>>
>>65447072
As this anon says, >>65447114
learning to load with a single stage setup (or a progressive press set up to run as a single stage) is the way to go starting out.. a very fast progressive press can make an astonishing amount of mistakes very quickly before you realize it…
>>
>>65447072
A turret really is an unnecessary middle road between good old single stage and a progressive press.
Really the best practice is to do every step as a batch
>clean all your brass
>trim all your brass
>size all your brass
Change die
>prime all your brass
>(expand all your brass)
(Change die)
>charge the load
>seat your bullet

You can charge and seat together as one step if you want, I do. but At most you have to change your dies twice.

My reloading setup is incredibly uncomfortable and single stage, so I get outright fatigued doing that many

Results from yesterday – .308 Lapua OTCE 100gr handloads from my L1A1 at 100m, needs like half a grain more powder to achieve full burn as I was getting unpleasant gas clouds in my eye while shooting

For a single day it would be 400…. Did those 38 specials, and back last year in September I loaded 400 rounds of 45LC on hp-38 in one long evening..
On a side note, spreadsheets are awesome for reloading records..

I think that’s a good method to try first, at least to sort in order of suspicion, instead of just pulling them all at random. Brass, bullet and primer shouldn’t be over 4 grains difference between each other or so I’d think. I’ve never weighed bullets for consistency before.

>>
>>65447300
Is it a possibility of it just failing to charge without dumping it into the next round?
>>
>>65448049
Mixed brass and cheap bullets. The spread between max and min weights between the two could hide the extra powder.
It's not a true double charge as the excess spilled but it would still be a stupid amount of pressure.

A custom bolt action, r700 clone. Shorter is of course fine for subs, but retaining decent velocity in supersonic loadings would also be desireable. I did manage to fiddle around in QL and found that with some very careful powder selection you can make just about anything work. The inch and a half difference didn't equate to much velocity loss at all

That’s ideal, was gonna say if your running it in an ar you have to worry about keeping the pressure up to cycle the action, but you can go crazy with that. Cfe BLK works pretty good for me in big bore stuff, somewhat ironically I’ve never tried it in 300 blackout, but it’s worth a look…

As a .32-20 loader I feel you, WHY IS THE BRASS SO FUCKING FRAGILE! AAAAAAGGAGAHH!
anyway 3.8GR of HP-38 is a pretty good load under a 115Gr hardcast LFN in my 1928-9 S&W 3rd model Hand ejector, may be the load I tried that just doesn't have enough ass behind it but a starting load of Lil Gun and 110gr hornady jhp's just squibbed and barely penetrated the old pine log I shot them at. I don't think these old guns were meant to shoot copper jacketed stuff, But that's just dumb speculation on my part.
Maybe I should go back for that old Zulu shotgun at the antique store, It was 112$ and decent but missing the Breech block and the hinge screw, that and it's only rated for black powder. Decisions, Decisions,.

Yeah I picked up 9000 pieces from an LGS going out of business sale in 2019 for ~$160. Gave 3000 to my dad. All nickel plated Remington. It's OK, had a few where the plating started to flake.

>>65451075
When I bought my reloading setup it was from an estate.. didn’t own a 38 at the time but it came with about 2k primed nickle plated cases. Still looking to get a double action 38…. Right now I mostly shoot it through my Blackhawk.. LGs had a 5 shot used Taurus snub with wood grips for 209$…. Strongly debating picking it up if it’s still there at the end of this week.. just for shits, giggles, and plinking.

Got to shoot some more 50 Alaskan mag over the weekend. Cleaned sized and reloaded brass shot well. Looks like since it’s really low pressure for what the brass can handle I’ll get plenty of reloads out of them. Looking at picking up a .510 mold so I’m not buying muzzle loading bullets. Figure alox should probably be enough, especially if I go with a slightly heavier bullet moving a little faster.. there’s a Lee .515 that would size down to .510 that’s a 450 gn.. so a touch heavier than the 385 gn ones I’m currently using. Only hiccup was after 11 rounds this weekend (28 total between both trips) it backed the screws for the rear sight out and launched it.. I was able to find it and already got it back on the barrel..

In my 50 Alaskan mag bullets I used pure lead muzzle loader bullets sized to .510 that were greased. Haven’t had any leading from those after almost 30 and it pushes them to 1350 ish fps out of a 15 inch barrel. But from what I understand leading is a combo of how soft the lead is, how tight a fit it is in the bore, how high the pressure is (basically how fast the bullets getting accelerated) and the rifling.. the leading happens because of heat causing the lead to gall out into the barrel so lubricants help lower the temp as the bullet slides by reducing friction, a gas check helps seal the bore so gas doesn’t get between the sides of the bullet and the barrel, powder coating acts as a lubricating barrier between the bullet and bore and significantly drops the friction and galling…. Which is why I really need to try to figure it out but I’ve had limited success with my experiments so far…. Honestly I was a lot more worried when I started but I think it’s like anything else in reloading, test it out carefully, watch for leading in your test shots and if it starts, clean it and try something different. Casting bullets is too much of a savings right now for me not to try.

Hey anon, I am a mechanic. Just shoot for a hobby on the weekends and stuff, never done my own reloading. I know quite a bit about various kinds of greases and lubes and such. Why do bullets need a special kind of lube? Lightweight? Non-combustable? Specific to the different metals (copper/lead/brass) to avoid galling? Would just any lightweight oil work fine (LPS1 for example)?
>>
>>65456913
It needs to stick to the lead in order not to immediately foul the barrel to shit
>>
>>65456919
Oh ok, it is not about pressing the bullet into the casing. It is lubricant for the bullet to barrel surface area. Interesting. Thanks anon. I assume you would want something that will stay on the bullet during transport and over time in storage then. Too lightweight and it would run off or evaporate (if greaseless) before you even loaded the round into a gun. But not too sticky like a preservative so that it actually lubricates the bullet.
>>
>>65456941
Yes bullets are actually a couple thousandths wider than the narrowest part of the bore
>>
>>65456948
To better grip the rifling, I assume. Thanks for teaching, anon.
>>
>>65456852
Harbor freight white works like shit, and if you bend screen into a tray make sure your not using galvanized metal so you don’t accidentally hear colors when using it…. I’ve got the same, goodwill toaster oven and a cool whip container to mix the coating and bullets, no luck getting it non blobby, Probably going to try ordering some ford blue powder which for whatever reason seems to be regarded as particularly good at covering bullets…

>>65456913
Main factor I’m concerned with is that it stays solid when it’s 120 degrees here in Arizona…. Feel like this guy could probably add some useful info on the chemistry side of things… >>65456859

But as others said, you want something that sticks and it’s to allow the bullet to slide down the bore while reducing heat and leading on the rifling.

I need to read his question, now its too late. To prevent sticking you need to know which kind of metalls interact. For example to stamp sheet metall you use AW/EP additives that react in the cutting zone while aluminium wont react it will need polar lubricant contant like Esters (2EH-Stearate). Honestly, I’ve got the drill adapter. I tried using copper cutters and ended up squishing a case down too much so I don’t know if I need sharper cutters for that but I’m not planning on converting more than maybe 100 or 150 cases and even though you have to do it in two stages due to needing the smaller pilot it’s still less than 30 seconds of trimming per case when you’re cycling it with a drill

I've got time to reload, but not time to hit the range. I'm building up a little pile of target loads for .308, .30-06, 5.56, .38 special, and .357 magnum. I'm still new to all of this and can't help but suspect that I'm making stuff that is gonna blow up my gun despite not loading anything more than 50% of what data suggests. I think I'm just running into odd inconsistencies with my equipment as I get more experience with it all and it's making me nervous. Sometimes my bullets get seated at deeper or shallower depths without me changing anything. I've discovered my RCBS powder measure really doesn't like stick powder and I'm getting powder clumping and bridging in the measure, leading to inconsistent loads. My electronic scale decides, at random, to be way off and take a long time to adjust to what the correct weight is. Again, I'm still familiarizing myself with the process and I'm trying to be conservative as I build experience, but all of these errors make me think something is going to go wrong and I'm gonna blow up. I feel like I need to hit the range and prove to myself what I've made is safe and I need to stop fretting.

My dad was a league trap shooter for years
So much that him and I occasionally go to the club and shoot at 25 clays with loads he did back when I was in grade school. He's got some shell progressive press that I pressed 50 shells when I was a kid. Winchester AA is his preferred
At gun raffles I always put in for a semi 20 or lever .410 and want to load for those
But yeah there's some cowboy reloading that I won't attempt. He taught me a lot about metallic handloading. To the point where I'm on a wildcat binge with .45 Super and he's now bragging about me to his buddies.
Shot shell reloading is still foreign to me lol.

HAH! I know this one. Fucking Ohio…

350 legend now uses .355 diameter bullets…. But Ohio has a minimum requirement for bullet diameter of .357. And since it’s a major market for straight wall hunting cartridges the work around was to say it’s a .357 bullet with a .003 tolerance…. (That .355 falls within). So it’s a very unique combination of stupid legal bullshit and Ohio being…. Ohio…. As a former Ohioan it is 100% not fucking surprising.. have fun with your 350 legend lol

the gun is rated for up to 38200 PSI, after which it'll cause issues with the bolt and timing, but shouldn't cause any major safety issues unless I really over do it
I'll still work up to it of course and put in some research before I try anything
>>
>>65463413
What gun? Different anon, but I'm curious.
>>
>>65463413
The main thing is the warning “errors due to tolerance likely” generally means that overcrimping. Or seating the bullet too deep can cause it to run overpressure.. it’s not impossible to load those, but do so with an excess of caution, it’s an “oops blows the gun up” not “oops kicks much harder” territory
>>
>>65463406
Grt and quickloads are both pretty useful, but the rule is you get out what you put in. I typically load and model some published loads to get a feel for how well it’s matching real world performance before I start trying squirrely stuff with a specific caliber.

>>
>>65463428
Not sure to be honest. Personally I’d verify Oal on every round and weight every charge. I already do that with my hot 454 and other close to max big bores.. but it’s gonna be more tedious loading 9mm.
>>
>>65463428
So this is that same light penetrator but accidentally seated to 1.04 instead of 1.05. That’s enough to push it into predicted overpressure. Also fwiw that seating depth is so you get enough of that short bullet in that case to give it a chance to be stable….

.01 difference is so tiny that i think even if I can load it all properly and precisely, I might just have issues purely from how I handle the ammunition or something like where it hits the feed ramp at a bad angle and still loads but the bullet is pushed in a little (happens noticably with bolt actions but dunno about semi autos)

>>65463520
Backing the charge down by a couple 10ths of a grain will help.. also honestly you’d want to get the case capacity of your actual 9mm cases and use that not the generic for it…. Like I said, GRT does some useful stuff but you need to see how it predicts safe loads to make sure your not doing weird stuff and always load a ladder to test your way up..

I've wanted a Winchester in .45-70 for a while, and it gave the perfect excuse to finally learn. I actually enjoy the recoil from .45-70 (which is weird since I hate lots of recoil in a handgun), but I admit I can't shoot a ton of it without putting on a shoulder pad at some point.

the wads change pressure dynamics a lot. using load data for one wad could blow up your gun with another wad
>>
>>65463657
All I was saying about the rifle is a pretty standard bolt gun is designed to take shitloads of pressure and even if you goof it extremely bad it will vent away from the face. Not so much with a vintage 45-70, a cartridge notorious for having 3 tiers of power kek

>>
>>65465300
Oh I grokked
>>
>>65463814
yeah thats the first thing i assumed too before i watched someone teach me how to load it. probaly has to do with the fact wads have different heights and stiffness/give when you compress them. kind of like how if you seat a bullet deeper in a brass case it increases pressure a shorter wadd probably does the same because it moves the shot closer
>>
>>65463814
heres what AI just told me:

Changing wads significantly alters internal volume and seal, directly impacting chamber pressure and ballistics in shotgun reloading. Even wads of identical dimensions can produce vastly different pressures due to variations in material stiffness, polyethylene mixtures, and internal design.

Stiffness and Cushioning: Stiffer wads (e.g., Federal 12S0/12S3) offer less compression, resulting in higher pressures, while softer wads (e.g., Remington TGT) compress more easily, yielding lower pressures.
Volume and Seal: Wads that take up more internal volume or provide a tighter gas seal increase pressure. For example, using a longer wad may reduce powder capacity but increase working pressure for the same velocity.
Component Swaps: Substituting wads without adjusting powder charges can cause dangerous pressure spikes. A difference of just 0.1 grains in powder due to wad substitution can result in a pressure swing of nearly 1,300 PSI.
Seating Pressure: Modern plastic wads require minimal seating pressure; excessive force can compress the wad’s cushion section, potentially leading to bulged crimps, buckled hulls, or erratic pressure readings.
Experienced reloaders emphasize that pressure numbers are relative and that sticking to published recipes for specific hull/wad combinations is critical for safety, as even minor component changes can shift pressures outside safe limits.

The construction of the shells themselves matters too, Honestly, the most annoying part of reloading is if you're not content with the cartridges you can produce, there's more and more equipment to buy.
>bullets expensive
>buy single stage press and mass produced components
>single stage is slow , case cleaning is slow, bullets expensive for target practice
> turret press works for one caliber, but cost savings Don't add up without diversity
>molds and lead pot to kill the bullet and shot expense
> vintage lubrisizer press to size bullets and all the 30 different calibers that need different dies

I feel like a guy who got into model trains but wasn't autistic enough to remember all of them but the big ones

How is RRP r*ddit? I've gotten some of my best 250 and 260gr .45 bullets from there.
>>
Anyone say fuck it and used 7.62 bullets in a 7.7 gun? If so can you stay on paper with it?
>>

If there’s anything that inspires trust in serious mechanical endeavors it’s A) not even trying to put the effort into the presentation of your product and B) coming from a country that needs to use diacritics for their silly sounding little language
>>
Do primers become any spicier with age as powder? I would think no because powder only does that because it physically erodes into smaller (therefore higher surface area) pellets

It lost out to 45-70 pretty badly. Which is a shame because I think with modern powders, and all the different .429 bullets it’s got potential to do all sorts of weird stuff…. On the crazy heavy end this was loaded with a 505 gn hardcast, hit 1650fps out of a 14 inch single shot pistol…. Want to try the same with some 125 gn Lehigh solid copper rounds.. run faster powder.. pretty sure I can safely break 3200 fps.. and then I’ve got a bunch of .429 shot capsules I keep wanting to try as well… >>65468605

So do you strap the muzzle end to the table or do you just wear a helmet? Jesus

I can't say "most brass" with good conscience because they work OK with Sako/Lapua .308 and 7.62x53R. Norma have tighter primer pockets I think

Loaded several ladder rungs with other bullets based on felt recoil and worked up in increments of 10 ft/lbs…. I’ve got a lot of big bore stuff and I’m pretty used to shooting stuff that kicks…. This was 70 ft/lbs with no brake and 4 shots was enough for me to forgo more until I get a brake on the gun…. Didn’t realize my support hand was coming all the way off till I saw it in slow motion…. Fun, if not sane experience lol

does that actually happen to powder if you keep it stored stationary and arent shaking the can like a bottle of juice?

Shaking does nothing.
Chemical break down causes issues, especially if poorly stored.
Trying to find a single pound of M10 is almost impossible now since it had a habit of auto-igniting.

Lone eagle, not super common or popular, but it’s neat. Single shot rotary breech.. the actions extremely short so it crams a 14 inch barrel in that footprint

so why does ammo from 100 years ago work fine? is this only for certain powders? how safe is my 2020 stockpile of win231 and imr4895
>>
>>65470808
Oxygen and water are the great killers of life. The more airtight a capsule of powder is, the better. Storage of that capsule matters heavily. And you and I wouldn’t know if a powder is still good until we fired it.

It's all magic to me. I know people handload .30 Lapua Scenars with good results for Finnish M39s which are made to take .312 bullets just like the .303
>>
I habe a question.

Is it feasible to use a bulletdesign where sone of the bullets endpart is seated deep inside the powder. Like oic related

The idea would be to habe an more favorable aerodinamical shape like a boattail but more.
>>
>>65472177
That is an inherently unstable bullet design. Some crazy ass gyro bullshit will have that pointy end facing away from the shooter some distance downrange of the sender

Idk, as a composite bullet maybe. Zinc base or something to keep the cg right. Cased telescoped cartridges are already a thing, though, and this wasn't the way

What's are some good presses that transfer energy mostly downwards? I live in an apartment and can't bolt shit to the wall, and my understanding of leverage is that most of the traditional presses would transfer energy diagonally, possibly flipping an unsecured bench.
>>
>>65476577
Just get a heavy enough bench to secure it? I've had my Lee classic turret press on an old Harbor Freight 18"x18" bench (heavy son of a bitch for it's size, probably because all the legs and supports are metal, but it was cheap on sale at the time) without issue. Your concern is understandable but overblown, if you need Hulk smash! strength on the downstroke of any press something is going horribly wrong.

1:20 twist rate.. I might be able to stabilize the heavy subsonic 44 mag rounds I was experimenting with…. Also need to get a single screw for grip..
>>
>>65477190
>>65477195
hell yeah homie. and yeah 1-20 twist rate being the only option is kinda odd. i think ssk industries offers 44mag barrels in 1-16 but then only allows 1-20 on the 445 offering. mgm only does 1-20
>>
>>65477540
To be fair, it’s an original Thompson barrel, not sure on the age exactly, but i don’t think fast twist was a big concern back in the day.
>>
>>65476603
Even when resizing the case? I thought that required pretty substantial force.
>>
>>65477739
they did use 300gr bullets for silhouette shooting so there might have been some desire for a faster twist. but since there arent more offerings in faster rates it shouldnt be too much a concern, especially when using 240s
cant wait to see what kinda speeds youll be getting so i can then compare to
sadly the gun tism is striking again making me want to also get a remington psr chassis to have a new handguard made to make it look like the racs chassis used in the m40a6

I’ve got a couple hundred sierra 300gn jsp’s that I’m looking forward to trying them in 445.. also have some 320 gn gas checked hardcasts, and those 505 gn monsters.. out of curiosity, know any books about the calibers for silhouette shooting? It was unfortunately well before my time but I really enjoy the guns that were developed for it.
>>
>>65461934
R9k? I dunno.
>>
>>65478004
its also well before me but the supermags were developed by elgin gates for silhouette shooting as he found the 357, 41, and 44 mags to not be adequate enough for the further targets so books by him should be a good start

if you need Baby Huey force during resizing you're either not using enough case lube or the case itself is so mangled out of shape you probably shouldn't be resizing it in the first place. The only times I've ever felt like I was risking flipping my bench was not using enough case lube and the cases were sticking and when I was resizing 30-06 brass into 7.7 Arisaka. Unless you build your own bench everything's a compromise, but if you're worried about flipping a bench you'll want more weight, so either buy a heavy bench or weigh it down somehow. If you live in an apartment not on the ground floor hauling that stuff upstairs is another problem, wear a decent back brace and gloves regardless of your age.
>>
>>65477785
Buddy make something out of scrap 2x4s and plywood. Steal some pallets if your real desperate. The force that the reloader enacts is largely rotational. It can be freestanding as long as there is enough mass. Affix the freestanding plinth/table to a platform you can stand on to make it a closed system of energy altogether, Like trying to pick up a bucket you’re standing in.

>>
>>65484130

>>
>>65484296
Half of them keyhole... at 50m
>>
>>65484130
Long for caliber, flat base, heavy bullets.
A softer linotype with a powder coat.
Something like (https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1010209946/?pid=562844), shim it with aluminum on one side if it drops too small and then size to 313.
Although keyholing might be velocity related, trie powder coating and increasing the charge a couple of grains and watch for cutting.
>>
>>65484371
>cutting.
Not that anon. What is cutting in this context?
>>
>>65484419
Gas cutting.
When you try and get too much velocity out of a cast bullet, or the alloy is too soft without a gas check, and the gas cuts through the projectile via the riffling, leaving molten lead in you rifles grooves.
Turns your gun into a smooth bore.
>>
>>65484525
Thanks. Never heard the mechanism for leading a barrel before. Alway just thought it was from hot smokeless loads melting the slugs ass and it just whipping around the barrel centrifugally
>>
>>65484556
>melting the slugs ass
It probably does that, but I believe the weakest link is the riffling, and the gas getting past the projectile and creating enough back pressure to leave shit behind.
If it didn't it would all just get blown out the end of the barrel anyway.
Molten slugs.
Powder coating helps a lot.
But honestly, if you can't do it with 240gr at 1200fps, you shouldn't be trying:)
>>
>>65484972
That’d be some pure fricking lead right there. Should even be used in something more important than hobby firearms

What the fug is wrong with that thing? I try to find out OAL with 68gr BTHPs from Hornady and the data spread is bad af. It tells me my 223Wylde chamber fits bullets that arent even reaching the 2.250" OAL from load book. Do i need to order a Ogive Gauge adapter?
>>
Also doesnt that means OAL to book data will hit the lands and cause a pressure spike if the data is correct?
>>
>>65485182
Is it telling you that you can fit bullets with a longer OAl than your expecting? Or a shorter? And yeah you’d probably want the ogive adapter since the critical dimension is where the throat hits the bullet and not where the point ends up in the hole.
