Have any /k/ommandos actually owned a former military vehicle for funsies? What was your experience like? I know it would be a miserable experience and I'd spend weekends sweating inside a steel coffin repairing things with parts no one can find, but I'm fully capable of that and have a lot of time on my hands.
Every time you take it out to do anything something will break until you finally spend every waking hour in abject fear of having to move it in any way
>>65459736They can be fun to drive around but they're generally a huge pain in the ass to run and maintain, even when you skip on "superfluous" maintenance tasks.These things generally get sold as surplus or and scrapped for a reason, most of them are just plain worn out.Basic spare parts can also be a giant pain in the ass to get a hold of, and lots of basic wear-items like tires can be difficult to get a hold of, or absurdly expensive.God help you if you buy something like a tracked vehicle with rubberized road wheels and the rubber on the wheels is old and crumbling.There's no practical way to fix that shit without spending a small fortune replacing all the wheels. Wheels that may be unobtainium with good replacement wheels costing thousands each.
Generally not worth it unless you like constant maintenance and parts sourcing. Humvee’s are generally a good entry, but it’s a shit load of paperwork to get it road worthy. Even though the auctions are cheap, you’re going to put a lot more cash towards just getting and keeping the damn thing running. If you really like the piece, it’s worth it I guess.
>>65459736Pretty sure it would be similar to that time when some people bought surplus Humvees and soon discovered that vehicles designed and built under the assumption that they will have the US military supply chain backing them up are a living hell when you don't.I'd imagine that older Warsaw Pact vehicles could be kept running with little more than a hammer, oil, and a piece of string though.

In the motorpool you'd just get a Private to change your tire, doing that shit in the field or without power tools suuuuuuuucks major dick.I did know a kid who bought a Mustang GT from a GSA auction. Three years old and under 20k miles for like 12 or 13k if I remember correctly. Apparently the Air Force used them to speed up to U-2 airplanes as they were landing so the ground crew could attach the landing gear.
