I don't think you should get a 44 at all. It's needlessly expensive to shoot, and less fun than a 38/357, and handgun hunting is unbelievably stupid.

If you're dead set on it, the 629 is a perfectly reasonable option. Issues with modern S&Ws are real and do happen hut are generally overstated. My 686 has been perfect from day one.

Youve also got it backwards on barrel length. The 5" will be more practical and if you like it better that's what you should buy. I wouldn't mind if my 686 was 5" desu.

Comparing my 686 to my GP100, it has a nicer double and single action trigger pull and a nicer finish. The ergos are worse, and the cylinder release is worse.

True
>handgun hunting is unbelievably stupid
I disagree on this one. I'm in the northeast woodlands where it's not super likely you'll get a shot on a deer at more than 50 yds anyway. A practiced handgunner is up to the task, I think. That's what I'm going for here.
>Youve also got it backwards on barrel length. The 5" will be more practical and if you like it better that's what you should buy.
Ah see, now you're making it more complicated for me lol because I was thinking the sight radius is an advantage for the 6.5", maybe a little less felt recoil too, but if I'm gonna hunt with this I can put a red dot on it so sight radius would be irrelevant. And 44 is 44, don't see myself saving much in the way of recoil with 1.5" extra barrel.

A well thought out post. Fuck you for being reasonable anon.

>>65496596
I'm sure the Anaconda has a better DA trigger out of the box. I love the DA trigger pull on my Python but I strongly dislike the serrations on the trigger shoe itself.
>Pachmayr Grippers
One option on a very very short list of decent grips for the Python/Anaconda. I personally use the Presentation grips that cover the backstrap on my Python.

Not the worst idea imo. I know for a fact they still have a few old competent gunsmiths working there (amongst some less experienced ones) for the revolvers and 3rd gen's. They just sell so many revolvers that it's impossible to have each inspected by a competent person. They fixed my snubby up well. I'm a bit more partial to rugers nowadays but I will admit the 629 looks sleek.

>northeast woodlands
I've lived and hunted out there and the honest truth is you're much better off using a slug gun if you're hunting in one of those areas where a real centerfite rifle isn't an option. Or even a muzzleloader. Shot placement with a good shotgun shooting slugs will be superior to a handgun even at 50yards even if it's possible. My dad took a nice deer with his GP100 but I still don't think it's ideal.

A 5" 357 would probably do everything you want. If you're really set on a 44 (besides ammo price, the larger frame is less ergonomic imo) then your eight that the 1" of barrel won't make much of a difference with muzzle flip/felt recoil and the sight radius isn't that significant.

I still shoot my 6" revolvers with irons worse than my handgun with a dot, or even than my wife's compact 9mm for whatever reason.

There are 1-2 super 1911 autists who come around but I haven't seen them in a bit. I'm still waiting on being spoonfed on how to troubleshoot my safety woes with the new fire control parts I put in my own Tisas turd polishing project.
>>
>>65498051
I already said check your mainspring housing for clearance, I’ve ran into this issue on a tisas before. The new mainspring housing was preventing the safety from pivoting enough to block trigger bow.

Viewing from above with the slide off you can see the arm of the grip safety and trigger bow.
>>
>>65498026
I'm glad you think it makes sense. My reasoning for this plan is that S&W's (and by extension the other american revolver manufacturers') QC problems come from lack of individual gunsmith attention. So yeah, it's very possible I get a gun with problems from the factory. But whether I get an old one "made right" or a new one made with questionable QC, I would still be sending this revolver out for that individual attention (trigger work, bead blasting, etc.)

So getting a new one ultimately means
>avoiding inflated price on limited supply old revolver
>avoiding used revolver problems (can't inspect a revolver to any real standard through gunbroker photos and I've been burned on this before)
>clock starts when I take my first shot, I know exactly what's done to it
>can get individual attention and modification from factory gunsmiths at a reasonable price
>after all of that, the warranty remains intact in case anything else comes up
>>
>>65497321
>Beat by 1911 based guns in that price point
Don't pay attention to MSRP, 92XIs can be had for 600 without even taking into factor all their rebates. I assume you're talking about 2011s, the only one really in the same price range is a tisas/mac 2011. While they may be a little nicer to shoot, 4/10 will likely have problems that require a gunsmith or warranty, whereas 9/10 Beretta's will just work out of the box. They're perfect for a competition shooter on a stricter budget that doesn't want to deal with 2011isms but still want a nice trigger.
>>
>>65498049
>you're much better off using a slug gun if you're hunting in one of those areas where a real centerfite rifle isn't an option
Oh absolutely - I'm not trying to suggest that a handgun is better than a slug gun. Just that handgun hunting is something that I see as doable and probably quite fun and I'd like to get into it. Don't worry lol I'd probably take at least one deer with 12ga slugs before I try using a revolver. Right now I'm just a pheasant hunter.

>A 5" 357 would probably do everything you want
You think that'd be okay for whitetail deer up here? Honest question because the guys I've spoken to in my area who hunt deer with revolvers all use 44.
>>
>>65498068
It just seems to be such a weird market for Beretta to push into using the 92 series as a base to work off of. I'm sure they broke even and have surpassed the R&D costs to make it SAO, but still.
I'm sure they're fine guns at the end of the day.
>>
>>65498073
Umm actually Beretta just made it SAO by using a trigger shoe that doesn’t give the trigger/trigger bar enough travel to reset the DA trigger. You can convert the 92Xi to DA/SA with a new trigger shoe.

And the frame safety has been a thing on a 92 for a long time but reserved for special models like the Combat, Steel, and variations of their old competitive shooting line. Its uses the same safety as the 92X Performance
>>
>>65498103
A slide safety decocker only (G model) in the 92X Performance's Nistan finish would have been the tits
>>
>>65498073
>Beretta to push into using the 92 series as a base to work off of
the APX is functionally dead and the PX4 can't be comped (yes i understand the rail shit exists) so the 92 is what they got
It's bizarre to me too because the 92 has an excellent trigger on its own and I don't really understand why they would use a vertec frame (bad) without modifying the slide to accept a lower red dot mount like the LTT one
they could've just built a centurion with a low RDO mount with a factory comp built into the slide and something similar to the langdon trigger bar and sear job, hybrid semi-flat trigger, and a mag funnel bevel and that shit would've sold like hotcakes
>>
>>65498045
What was the smell?
>>
>>65498112
It's pretty sad Beretta thought making a SAO Beretta 92 for competition usage was a higher priority than doing any attempt at modernizing the PX4 series with at least a better factory stipple job and a red dot ready slide
>>
>>65497625
Extractor tuning is easy, put it halfway into the slide and then bend by hand slightly. It should be able to hold a loaded cartridge against the breechface without it falling down. As for contact point polishing use 1000-2000 grit or a wool tipped dremel with super fine polishing compound or flitz and go in the direction of contact and movement. Get a proper checkering file if you want to do that along with a vice otherwise use grip tape or be satisfied with what you got. Trigger shoe bars should be uniform and slick. If it is catching somewhere, bend it or smooth it out. If you have them don't use the adjustment wings on the front to adjust setback until you know your entire firing mechanism works because they can cause problems that you'll be looking in other places to solve.
>>
>>65497965

"Need" is subjective but there is merit to doing something just because it's cool. For me that's learning to shoot big bore handguns well. I figured a .44 magnum revolver would be a good way to do that since I already have a Python in .357 which I have enjoyed so far (despite some minor complaints I've made in this thread and the last)

>>65498418
I also like the Contender and it seems like a smart choice for handgun hunting. Maximize accuracy for the trade off of having just a single shot before reloading. Not a bad tradeoff for hunting deer since once that first shot goes off the deer will either take off running if it's not an immediate drop. Haven't met anyone personally who uses one, though there is one sitting in a local gun store now. The only reason I'm not considering it atm is because I genuinely just enjoy the double action revolver shooting experience.

Whitetail deer are like dog sized. Full power 357 with good bullet construction will absolutely hammer one.

Of course, the last time I shot a deer it was a mule deer and I had my elk rifle on hand so I ended up annibilating it's heart with a 7mm rem mag and it still managed to run 15 yards and crawl under a shrub to die so it's hard to overdo it.

Got my replacement set of grips from Badger Custom. First one came all fucked up. Warped on the left side and stood very proud from any frame I put them on (probably because of the speedloader cut), unfinished and rough on the inside and outside edges, chips on the edges, a raised and sharp edge that might have drawn blood on the backstrap, ect. Just bad, especially for paying so much more for a premium blank of American black walnut wood. I've been buying grips from this company for 15 years and I was shocked at how bad the first set was compared to their usual quality. This new set is acceptable.

Does anyone know if Jim Badger retired? He used to be the one that took emails and handled things like this as well as being the guy that made the grips himself but now it's some guy named Jacob.
>>
>>65498666
Could be the trash one that has a plastic lense or it could be a good one as they do make a few quality optics now days. There is currently a sig 322 deal with one of their decent red dots so if it's that one you're getting $60 for a used gun. I really love my tx22 and haven't heard good things about the sig 322, but the viridian dots are basically toss aways at this point in a world where you can get a quality swamp fox on ebay for like $60

Insane kydex creations? Yeah I carried with their light bearing holster for 4 years now, it was actually the holster that I started carrying with. Unless you mean some other IKC in which case I'm out of the loop sorry man. Their prices and lead times are currently bit rough compared to some of the competition but at the time they were the only ones making a good light bearing 509 holster. Forgot to mention but I really do like how well covered the trigger guard is with the IKC compared to ANR holsters and some other brands I've seen. Not as important for a IWB as it would be for OWB or pocket holsters but if you ever plan on taking it off and tossing it in a bag you wouldn't have any worries. Yeah the aftermarket really isn't too shitty compared to other pistols but holsters are lacking. Mags and a lot of modifications are interchangeable between the older models and the a1 series. Pretty much all of the holsters specifically for a F don't consider lights and the ones that do are streamlight partnered, which nothing against streamlight but that's one place I like to save a bit of money
>>
I never see anyone mention CQC holsters but they have the broadest variety of customization that I've seen anywhere with custom kydex holsters. Dual layer, codura wraps, wide array of patterns, numerous clip options, and dozens of gun/light configurations. Just overwhelming variety really. They're a little expensive and they have a huge lead time now, but it seems to be very high quality

The ten on the left are separated by an empty row to distinguish them for chamber duty which entails being the cartridge loaded repeatedly and exclusively for an entire month until replacement. The centre 18 were temporarily removed from the Mec-Gar you see there but otherwise are relegated to an auxiliary role because of their burrs or blemishes. The 10 FMJ cartridges are just there because I wanted to throw away the empty Range Dynamics box. Lastly, the one in the upper right corner was the chamber cartridge of that month and the three below it were from the months prior. The other 18 were in the second Mec-Gar that serves as my EDC magazine. Eventually, I'll have to purchase another box of Federal HST.

You should try a P322 before you consider one, I dislike them despite the on paper stats. The TX22 and Mark I can comfortably recommend sight unseen. I wouldn't buy a P322 for that much even with the optic. TX22 price is not great, and Viridian is crap. Mark is great but low capacity and no optic

tl;dr I wouldn't pick between these three based on what "deals" you're seeing, pick the gun you want first and go from there. If a superb trigger is a priority, the Mark is unchallenged of those choices. For blasting fun the other two would be tied, subjectiveness removed, but the TX will be cheaper which imo is one of a gun's strongest virtues. Reliability is maybe the strongest and in my experience the TX22 runs circles around the others

I love it. I've tried regular FMJ Sellier &Bellot 180 grain, Fiocchi FMJ 180 grain, and a hand loaded box I bought from a booth at a gun show. The S&B was super nice, low recoil and easy to get back in target. The Fiocchi was noticeably harder recoiling, but I shot better groups with it. The hand loaded stuff sucks, I got a dud round I tried to fire several times with good primer strikes, and it didn't fire. The ones that did fire though were similar to the S&B. I haven't fired a PX4 storm, but it's rotating barrel really intrigues me and I do hope to buy one at some point.

For real why don't we have rayguns yet? They don't need to be better than regular bullet guns but some kind of exotic "bullet" or energy gun should exist for variety.

Still shouldn't be cracking slides. L7A1 was definitely over 50k, which the NATO limit and why it wasn't "supposed" to be used in handguns. Glock slides will eat proof loads all day, the damage shows up elsewhere. The 92 isn't a particularly strong design, as you'd expect from almost one entire fuckin' side of it just not being there.

>>65500380
>Still shouldn't be cracking slides.
I'm not particularly worried about that failure mode given I'm not going to be running 5-6k rounds of proof loads through any gun, which is what the DoD/beretta report eventually found was the average round count
>The 92 isn't a particularly strong design, as you'd expect from almost one entire fuckin' side of it just not being there.
you have no idea what you're talking about. the 92 is fine and the slide is completely fine being an open top
the only reason why you couldn't do the same to a glock and have it function perfectly fine is because it's a browning action rather than a p38 locking block design

I made a lot of mistakes getting into guns but the Tokarev was not one of them. I really really enjoyed the one I used to own. Back in 2020 when I bought mine the desired ones had the frame safety you removed because they didn't work (ATF required they be imported with a safety, not that the safety functions) and without the safety it shot better. Mine had a bunch of cosmoline in the trigger so I baked it on one of those throw away aluminum pans at my ovens lowest setting for about 30 min and it took all the squish out of the trigger pull. Thing is totally unsafe to carry with one in the chamber, but for a range toy that doesn't matter.

All that is to discourage you from treating it like a serious firearm you could carry or use for HD. It's not. But for a ~$250 fun gun it's a hell of a time. Really enjoyable to shoot and cheap rarely go together but for this gun it does.
>>

250$ could buy modern turkshit that's 80% as good as anything else on the market, I doubt someone looking for their first carry/HD pistol is going to buy surplus slavshit with doubly priced ammo compared to 9mm. Turkey has made the barrier to entry for a modern ergonomic 9mm mcdonald's tier

>>65500825
Yes it is. Do it, it is worth the $600. I got mine at auction for $600 with 6 mags and two holsters. The trigger is very sweet and smooth. I've been quite pleased with it.
>>
>>65500786
>I doubt someone looking for their first carry/HD pistol is going to buy surplus slavshit with doubly priced ammo compared to 9mm
The issue is specs on paper vs reality. If you look at the specs on paper the Tokarev has
>hammer fire with manual safety, making it much safer to carry for someone learning to carry then a striker fired pistol with just a trigger safety
>steel frame, making it much more comfortable to shoot compared to some light weught polymer pistol
>closer aethetics and ergos to guns a lot of noguns may have shot growing up like 1911s and ruger MK IVs
>a SAO trigger making it capable of very accurate fire like a 1911
>cheap holsters which are even leather making them more comfortable than hard plastic on your skin
>cool military history, they were used by the soviets in WWII
>A round with mythical armour penetration capabilities that doesn't recoil like 45 but is more powerful than 9mm

Of course if you are a handgun enthusist and know about firearms you know almost all of that is bullshit, with some like the round and history being not quite true but requiring nuance. But to a noguns or someone who owns a shotgun for HD and a rifle for deer? The Tokarev makes a lot of sense on paper.

Thanks for the tips! I just got the tisas and took it down, cleaned it and lubed it. The stock trigger feels great to me, but it’s my first SAO handgun, so it’s probably trash competitively. I’ll use your advice when I make any changes to the gun.

Just racking the slide it extracts and feeds snapcaps without any issues. I’ll see how it does at the range today

1; last round jumped the feed lips of one of the Mec-Gar mags locking the slide back prematurely, which isn't surprising, given that the mag has a smooth, flat follower and short, straight feed lips.
>Accuracy
During slow fire, I managed to keep the group to about the size of a grapefruit (4~") at 15 yards, decreasing in size to a one-hole half dollar at 5 yards. I forgot my glasses, so I couldn't really make out the bullseyes at 20-25 yards, results inconclusive.
During rapid fire, I found the gun very controllable and held A-zone on a IPSC silhouette out to 10 and threw 3 charlies and one borderline at 15 out of 40 shots
>Misc.
Right grip started to loosen around the 200 round mark, I noticed that the WML had loosened at around 250. Both were tightened when I noticed them and held fast for the rest of the session. At ~280, I noticed that the FLGR was protruding a little.
Federal seemed to print high in this gun compared to the others
>Overall impression
Very satisfied. Might change the FLGR for a GI one, but I kind of like it in spite of its disadvantages as it lends a sort of mid-00s charm to it.
>>
Handguns weren't relevant until Glock came to the market
>>
>>65500911
Look up how to do the safety check on a 1911 that makes sure all of the functions of the gun are working. Takes 30 seconds to do and it’s something you should do every single time you reassemble the gun.
