Ironically this is my biggest fucking problem with it. I feel like I haven't done a single fucking thing of note since I joined. The job is literally show up, fuck around for most of an 8-12 hour shift, do maybe one or two meaningless managerial taskers that should probably be handled by an NCO instead of me, and go home. This is the easiest job I've ever had by far but also simultaneously the least fulfilling. Feeling completely useless isn't super fun.

To anyone looking to join USSF for Cyber, I implore you to join the Air Force instead. I wish I had. Unless you're content to do mostly nothing, and definitely next to nothing cyber related, there is no benefit whatsoever to joining Space instead of Air to do computer shit

You're only going to drag it out by taking detours. Talk to an SF recruiter instead of a regular army recruiter for more information about it. Polygraph tests are bunk but they are useful for rejecting applicants on grounds that would be unacceptable with modern worker's rights and protections. You can't tell someone you threw away their valid and competitive application because they have a septum piercing, but you CAN say that the polygraph test detected unusual amounts of stress and potential dishonesty. How do you fight back against that sort of accusation?

I'm not a security expert but as far as I can tell polys are meant to psyche you out and get you to either admit to stuff you wouldn't otherwise or reveal things that could be used to blackmail you. For example on the lifestyle poly they might ask if you're gay. If nothing on the readings changes, you answer no, but you are actually gay, it doesn't really matter because clearly you don't care either way. On the other hand if your heartrate spikes and you stammer out a "n-no" but you are actually gay, then they're gonna start looking at you sideways because now clearly this is something that can be used to blackmail you. Whether or not you're actually gay doesn't really matter, what matters is if you care about hiding it.

None of that is advice and all of that has been put together through anecdotes and conjecture. You don't need a polygraph for a TS. Only certain agencies and certain positions ask for it, and even fewer make you do the lifestyle poly which is the one most people are scared of because apparently they really dig deep on you for that one.

If you do have to take a polygraph, just don't be like the retard in this article and cop to watching loli hentai or something fucking stupid like that.

I went with the Garmont T8 Falcon because it was 100$ with my size. I will go with NFS if its on sale. I will say 185$ is still pretty cheap for a pair of boots however. Corcoran changed their design and upped the price beyond the value of their boots. I blowout a pair of boots roughly every 14 months with zero traction. Far beyond what regs allow.

I heard salmon cheapened out on alot of material so people are moving to other brands. Either way clothing brands come and go all the time. It's worse since the sneaker like design of hiking boots weren't ever meant to be resoled you would hope they last 1000 miles at the minimum or like Merrell they got you into hiking boots because they are like 100-200$ at most making them as cheap as sneakers but twice as long lasting. I however can't wear their military boots because the zipper design is inherently flawed garbage.

About to finish grad school and Space Force is calling my name but I don't want to get dumped in Colorado, Cali, or Florida. Is the Greenland base trash? I love cold weather so that wouldn't be a problem for me.

The only trash location on this list is Cali because you're in the middle of nowhere and everything is Expensive. Colorado puts you in the Springs where you're an hour from Denver and surrounded by nature. If you love cold weather Colorado has lots of that. You have a better route to the ski mountains from Springs than you do from Denver anyways since you dodge the interstates by going up diagonally instead. Florida puts you on the Space Coast and the weather is beautiful; I've seen people literally fight each other over a Florida assignment. You watch rockets launch all day and lounge on the beach after work. California is actually garbage though because it's a tech school base and in the middle of nowhere

You cannot PCS to Greenland. It is a 1 year tour. If you want to join for Greenland, don't bother. Also the other guy here >>65515867 is right in that Space Force is hot garbage if you want to do anything meaningful. We're brand new and nobody knows what they're doing and that isn't going to change for at least a decade.

There are overseas locations that you can PCS to but good fucking luck. Odds are you will end up in Colorado and that's completely fine. Colorado is nice, there is plenty to do if you're not a fucking loser, and crime is low.

Study for the ASVAB for a couple months and study Securty+ then go for a IT job in either airforce or army. Navy is weird where if you fail out they give you a catch all position to do bitch work. If you fail out of your career in any other branch they give you needs of the military but its at least a career job. Intel is fine but fewer jobs and most people don't want to do aircraft maintenance but the pay is good if you do Avionics.

I also have a bachelors degree and so do a lot of enlisted in the Space Force. Going from Civilian to Officer is a year+ application process and I couldn't afford to wait around that long. With the way they're planning on doubling the force in the next few years maybe it'll be easier, but they're telling everyone who's E and has a degree that if you apply to go from Green to Gold right now you're gonna get it more or less guaranteed. Food for thought.

Ha. Haha. There are literally only three Enlisted SFSCs in the USSF. Your options are:
>5S Space Operator
What you do will vary COMPLETELY based on where you're assigned. Generalist job with no guarantee of anything.
>5I Intel
Completely useless in the civilian world unless you want to stay in the intelligence realm. Also you deal with the most autistic people in any given branch.
>5C Cyber Operator
The only benefit to this shred is that you get Security+ for free through tech school. Depending on where you're sent, your unit may pay for you to get other certs, too. YMMV.
We used to be shredded out. Network guys, systems guys, radio guys, defense guys. Radio got nuked (see: sent to 5S dungeons), and Network/Systems got merged into Defense. Everyone Cyber is now supposed to be doing cybersecurity. Is that the case yet? No, but it will be sooner rather than later, so if you're not interested in cybersecurity then don't bother.

I don't know what Officers do. But I HEAR you don't get to pick; You get sent to officer school, study everything, and they pick FOR YOU based on your scores. So good luck going that route

TLDR my opinion of the Space Force is that it's generally not worth it. We're far too new to get any tangible value or experience out of joining. Probably the most valuable thing you will be leaving the USSF with is your TS clearance (which is a whole other thing to consider. if you think you might not be able to pass a TS investigation for any reason, you probably shouldn't waste your time. its a long process and nothing sucked more than seeing people get kicked out during basic or tech school because of clearance issues)

That aside you're also flipping a coin as to whether you spend your contract doing basically nothing or brutal shift work. All depends where you're sent. Look up SPAFORGEN and think about whether or not 105+ days (a third of the year) of shift work with no leave is something you would be comfortable with doing. Its a total morale buster for most people.

If you really want to do anything technical you should probably just go Air Force. But if you wanna roll the dice on USSF improving then be my guest. I don't think it will anytime soon

Serious question, why do you think it’s better to be on the ground floor “ground floor” of a military branch? They’re not gonna pay you more. It’s not like you’re getting stock options like some Silicon Valley start-up. You won’t retire any faster than another branch. Space Force is currently promoting slightly faster than other branches, but that could change any year. You won’t have to worry about E-5 for a couple of years, and the rates could be totally different by then.

I just don’t see what the ground floor offers that other branches don’t.
