All the .300 AAC discussion in the LARP thread has reinvigorated my interest in it and the other big caliber uppers. Best loads for .300Blk especially sbrs and subsonics?
Flattened primers is supposed to be a sign of overpressure yet I’m noticing this is just normal or at least common even in factory ammo let alone my minimum charged loads
why do people risk blowing up their gun and suffering permanent injury to get an extra 75fps that will never, ever matter in the real world
>>65539289That’s not the goal of the hobby if you aren’t just being comedically reductive
>>65539150Yes primers are softer or harder depending on manufacturer.
>>65539289Because a second hand press is $50 and nugget food is over $1/rdAnd it’s fun!
Got my 2nd Bergara today, but they sended me a 22" and not the 24". Does that really matter alot for 6.5Creedmoor
>>65539632Not a lot but It should matter on principle. You asked for a 24” not a 22”. Does adherence to rules overcome introversion in Germans?
Just finished 100 .45 SWCs200gr Xtreme PL86.8grs AutocompFederal LPPs1.221" OALMy last batch was 1.245" per Xtreme's guide, and those weren't feeding 100% reliably. My 1.230" ones were better, but my 1.219"s were way better. Aimed for an even 1.220" and some measured that, but 1.221" was the most average so that's what ended up in my log book and on the box labels.
>>65539701I could give it back without a problem but the 22 might be better than a 24. I want a tactical LRP rifle (later chassis) and a 24" might be to long with a good break. But i have to say the Bergara PRO feels much more qualitative than the nor al HMR
>>65539705vgh, SG-1...
>>65539705.45LC?
>>65539832>SG-1Hell yeah!>>65539840>45LC?Sorry, Auto. I'm used to saying just .45 and Super to specify. Eventually I want one of those Ruger LC/Autos so I'll get around to loading for LC.
>>65539890Apologize not. Both are equally American.
>>65539973
Do you guys wear nitrile gloves when reloading to limit lead and mercury exposure?
Time to reload rifle rounds for the first time. Wish me luck.
>>65540338Yes. I leave the room when tumbling brass too. Im uncharacteristically conscious of chronic toxic substance exposure reloading. I rarely wear gloves working with other dirty stuff like automotive greases and oils and gun cleaning solvents. But potential lead and mercury poisoning just hit some certain string in me apparently.
Just had some winchester #41 small rifle primers do their infamous pinhole flamout around the ege and pit a 556 Beryl bolt face. Fun. That's what I get for for thinking I could trust them, but it was during one of the last primer shortage panics. Anyone have experience with getting any money/reimbursement from them?
>>65540406Shouldn’t need luck bro. Take your time, do a small batch first, measure everything twice. If you have a moment of uncertainty pull the bullet and check or discard the suspect round. You presumably have reloaded pistol rounds already?
>>65540610500 rounds of .45ap, not a single failure as of yet.
>>65540612Well it’s the same shit so follow the data and don’t send anything you’re unsure of. Throwing away Pennies could save you hundreds or a trip to the hospital
>>65539705>1.221" OALI had 2 jams. 1 was because the brass rim was a little bent, that's on me for missing it when processing brass. The other one I'm not entirely sure of how it happened. But I'm sticking with this length.
>>65542330Can you explain the malfunction a little more clearly? Was it a failure to feed or failure to extract/eject?
>>65542432One was failure to feed, one was failure to eject.I should have taken pics, but just wanted to clear it ASAP and keep shooting.
>>65542330What’s your trim length?
>>65542443>trim lengthNo trim, just ran through the calipers at a max length of 0.898". The ones that failed go in the "need trim" bucket.
how fast can i run this given its 22bhn lead and powder coated, i shoot mostly 100y (300 occasionally) and twist is 1:9 or 1:10
>>65540406Here
Anyone ever reloaded 5.7x28 back in the day? Shit used to be fucking expensive
>>65539289some calibers perform best at max pressure
>>65544686Hell yeah!
Is 220 or 230 the limit for 1:10 30-06
>>65547049>1:10 30-06220 per Sierra.
>>65546022Such as?
I’ve asked this before but is it best to air cool or water quench annealed cases?
>>65549323i dont think ive seen people do a water quench so air cooled should be just fine. be the guinea pig for the rest of us and do both
>>65549323Slow cool. Quickly quenching causes hardness and brittleness which in this application is probably the same or worse than not annealing at all. >company freely and easily makes manual available >it’s a good manual with comprehensive instructions and clear diagramsI will now purchase your product.
How long in between restocks at BPI online?
>>65550092Asking you to break the rules and advertise to me sir. >>65550517Support your local big box chains sir
>>65550092Once it's to temperature it doesn't matter how you cool it. Water quenching just keeps the annealing where you want it.
I have never really given much thought to getting onto reloading. I primarily shoot pistol calibers, mainly 9mm and .40 and I typically go through about 1,000 rounds a month, sometimes 2,000 if I have a slower workload that month. I usually maintain a stockpile of about 10,000 rounds at any given time and just buy another case every month to replenish whatever I've shot through. My time is valuable due to my professional workload and I have the budget to buy factory ammo. Is it worth the time and expense to get into reloading? And How long does it take you to produce 1,000 rounds?Genuinely curious inquiry from an ignorant
>>65552670If your time is valuable then absolutely not worth reloading bulk target 9mm. Unless you really have a budget and wanna get a progressive or automatic press
>>65552517This doesn’t sound correct. Please explain the metallurgy.
>>65552749>absolutely not worth reloading bulk target 9mmLike target as in SWCs? Is there even factory 9x19 SWCs?That seems worth it to me.
>>65552935Never seen 9mm SWCs so if that’s your desired round it probably has data sonewhere
>>65552749Thanks, that's mostly what I had assumed.Honestly the question only came up because I had some dipshit in another thread trying to lord it over me that they reload and I couldn't understand their logic so I figured I must be missing something. I shoot a little 6.5creed and now that one yeah i could see reloading but I usually just confirm sight alignment and shoot 2-3 rounds at a time. It'd be different if I was burning through boxes every weekend but when it's less than a box each year that also seems counterproductive
>>65539150If you are looking at primers for "signs of pressure" then you have bought into fuddlore. You have a massive margin of error where all a primer can tell you is that you're within a 30kpsi spread. Could mean you're 15kpsi under PMax for a cartridge or 15kpsi over. It's even more pointless to look at primers for cartridges that operate lower than 60-65kpsi. Usually those lower pressure cartridges are chambered in guns that will just fail by the time you are able to discern things from a primer.(ie leverguns)There are a number of signs that crop up that are more useful for knowing whether pressure is high, primers are about the least useful.Denton Bramwell has a good paper on it that's I'm having trouble tracking down, you can find it if you looi otherwise I saved a copy and will post screen shots.
>>65553724I was having all sorts of flattened and blown primers, when I was loading 5.5 grains of SR4756 in .32 h&r mag and a .314 115 grain LFN. A few years or so ago. I thought it was over pressure. So I started to back off. So it was fine? Should I use SRP Instead since they are harder and it'll be me some peace of min
Fudd4lyfe
>>65553782Did your firing pin have a burr on it?Alternatively is it just too long?By the time you see pic rel, there's some pretty big challenges afoot if you got there accidentally. All of these were the same load, but pressures were likely north of 70kpsi. Some primers leaked as the primer pocket expanded far beyond its intended size while others look fine except the primer attempting to flow into the firing pin channel. Case heads were pretty flattened, but that's another pressure "sign" that has massive variability.
>>65552965
>>65553901No no I’ve seen .35 wads. Not storebought 9mm Luger rounds, boxed and loaded with them.
>>65554350Those are .356" SWCs for 9mmhttps://missouribullet.com/details.php?prodId=172&category=5&secondary=8&keywords=
>>65554437Neat. I’ve never seen 9mm swc fully loaded, powder, brass, primer and bullets ready-to-fire rounds. So if making some paper punching parabellum is what you want go for it. Totally worth the venture.
How do yall dispose of tumbling media? I wet tumble with stainless steel pins, lemon, and soap. I don't want to hurt any critters by pouring the lead water down the drain or into the soil.
>>65554493Lead comes from the ground bro
>>65554493If you don’t shake your solution like a noisy baby can’t you just decant 90% of the water—heavy metals dissolved on the bottom—and just keep the remaining solution? Lead and mercury dont combine with anything to make some horrible water-soluble chemical do they?
>>65554498And a barrel cactus makes a good footstool.
>>65554512Sure I could decant the water, but I don't know how much of the water would have lead in it after "settling", and the remaining solution would have to be disposed somehow. Do you take it to a hazmat disposal site?
>>65554531It’s a little late in the season but just leave it in the sun bro. The water will evaporate leaving a smaller volume to deal with
>>65554493Drink it obviously
>>65554556I did that a few weeks ago and all the water evaporated, its still 90 degrees here, looking to be 100 over the weekend. I didn't want to believe globohomo warming but its hotter than a two-dollar pistol on a redhead's hip. I'll tumble another batch this weekend and pour it into the bucket. Maybe mixing the lead water with walnut shell would make an easily disposable paste.
>>65554624How much residue left in the vessel?
>>65554637The bucket I dumped it into is bone dry now, just a bit of yellowish crud at the bottom.
>>65552461Great thanks.
https://www.theamericanmarksman.com/7.62x51-primed-hpt-cases-500-ct.htmlI can use these as standard cases for normal pressure reloads, right?
>>65554687That’s how much crud was in your solution, some of it was surely lead. There you go. Make 5000 more buckets and you might be able to smelt a terrible quality slug out of it
What's a good powder coat for lead shot/buckshot?
