US to create new 4-star-level Autonomous Warfare Command (AutoWarCom)
https://breakingdefense.com/2026/09/hegseth-announces-plans-for-new-4-star-drone-command-further-general-officer-cuts/
Seems to be loosely patterned off of what Ukraine did with their Unmanned Systems Forces.
Thoughts?
>>
>>65552859
Drones are fucking gay but anything to stay ahead of china is good.
>>
Eh. We already have a dedicated infrastructure for larger unmanned systems in the air force, and the smaller shasneeds and FPV sized assets should be organic at the company level rather than in their own little ghetto. Its not a terrible idea to have a workgroup for drone advancement and iteration, but I dont see what this does better than existing natick or darpa initiatives.
>>
>>65552859
Didn't they disband the drone unit??????
>>
>>65552871
>I dont see what this does better than existing natick or darpa initiatives.
I think the goal is to win.
As opposed to whatever the fuck is happening at fentcom.
>>
>>65552859
Getting US military bases off civilian power grid and 6 new Senior Military Colleges is the more interesting stuff.
>>
>>65552859
>Thoughts?
Good idea in principle, but it seems that drones need to be integrated organically at all levels in existing formations and commands.
>>
>>65552875
Troll?
>>
>>65552875
Perhaps the plan was to always do what Hegseth is doing now with a fully dedicated command as this type of stuff takes months/weeks to coordinate, but it's also quite possible the backlash he got over his current retard spree forced his hand in making this.
>>65552871
I think the plan is to concentrate everything into a single command structure that's fully dedicated to research and learning how Drones, AI, and automated platforms work out in a warzone/modern military. The individual branches will most likely have something similar built into their own force strutctures, but this at least gets the foot in the door for a much larger (and needed) military automation footprint
>>
>>65552875
Didn't someone say the unit was just a training unit? Now they're taking whatever the unit learned and restructuring things to make use of said knowledge?
>>
>>65552875
That was an infantry battalion temporarily converted to an experimental drone unit and then converted back. This is a 4 star level command.
>>
>>65552898
>Didn't someone say the unit was just a training unit?
It was made to basically figure out what the Ukrainians were doing and how it could fit into currently exisiting US force structures as well as what the US can and should do differently.
>Now they're taking whatever the unit learned and restructuring things to make use of said knowledge?
They're turning the unit into a whole ass command. It's a massive expansion
>>
>>65552875
The experimental training unit? Yeah, it got disbanded. Because the experimental training was over. Retard.
>>
>>65552859
I'd like it less if they hadn't cut 10% of geneeal officers. I still think the airforce should be be cut up in rolled into the Space Force and Army and the Marines should be full integrated into the Navy.
>>
Strategically speaking, a pivot like this hangs on a scale.
You can slide your existing resources to be 100% focused on this new initiative, or you can have it be a ceremonial unit with 0% of resources, or you can land somewhere in between where the new initiative complements existing/upcoming initiatives.
This misses the point.
The point is that that regardless of how much the focus is shifted, whether it's 0%, 100% or somewhere inbetween, the direction may not be the issue - the issue may well be foundational.
Take for example - it is easy to put forth retrospectives on "what ukraine/russia should've done differently ahead of 2022", however few minds pay attention to "what native americans should've done differently ahead of the American Indian wars".
It's difficult to see America to be in such a dire strait (heh) militarily, yet all strategic indicators and military outcomes continue to indicate that the nation not only lacks the means to continue its current force sizes, but also that it lacks the means to meaningfully adapt in offensive roles.
Then again, it's also worth asking - if the trillion dollar military with thousands of cutting edge jets and top of the line everything is struggling with strategic objectives, what does being a military superpower actually mean? What objectives are actually realistic in a future battlefield?
>>
>>65552883
But there’s already like 11 of them
>>
>>65552904
Wonder what kind of bs the military is up to considering the fuck you amounts of money they have
>>
>>65552919
agreed, they need to cut 90% of general officers
>>
what officers did they even cut?
>>
>>65552919
I see Special Ed. got out. How was school little timmy
>>65552950
20% of all current 1 star and above. Don't think any real details were put out into the public as I don't think the list has been finalized yet

Where is your rebuttal? Butthurt flyboy or crayon eater?
Army does land and its own aviation.
Marines are already technically Navy, there is no need to have all the resources for an entire separate branch, they can even still be called Marines and train to higher standards, but fully integrate them into the Navy, they dont need their own camo, uniforms, weapons, air.
Air Force didn't even exist until after WWII
Split it up between Army, Navy and Space Force.
Done properly you save millions and nake everything more efficient.

Hegseth:
>I'm announcing Project Meridian, an effort led by America's best minds to study the future of warfare. It will be co-led by three of our nations best minds: Elon Musk, Palmer Lucky, and Newt Gingrich.
>We are announcing the creation of Autonomous Warfare Command, or AUTOWARCOMM. A new 4-star combatant command built to scale autonomous and robotic capabilities across the joint force.
>We are launching Fortress America, a national insurance policy for the American homeland. Now FORTRESS stands for Federal Operations for Resilience Troop Resources...Energy... Supply and Survivability. Here's what FORTRESS calls for: Every major military installation in America is going to generate its own power independent from the civilian grid.
Chinks gonna beat our cheeks until we bleed out of our assholes
>>
>>65553168
So besides the creation of yet another think tank out of the thousands out there, what exactly is wrong with the 2nd and 3rd besides the cringeworthy names?
>>
>>65552871
>the smaller shasneeds
A company shouldn't be trying to plan and organise it's own midrange strikes 20-30km in the enemy's rear on logistics.
>>
>>65553173
The third one is kinda pointless. If the enemy, whopever that is, is deep enough up your ass to take down your domestic grid, it's already ogre.
>>
>>65552932
Which is why it is interesting that they are elevating 6 more, at the same time as cutting the general staff.
>>

>>

You don't see it as a back door to mini nuke power reactors?
Valar Atomics came out with Project Beehive recently, they want to use 450 mini nuclear reactors to power a massive A.I. data center on federal land in Utah.
>>
>>65553182
So, no, you don't have anything to contribute.
>>
>>65553181
>>65553182
So do either of you have any legitimate objections or is it all just "muh kegsbreath"? No one even mentioned trannies, wonder what made that the first to come to mind for you.
>>
>>65553184
I don't know very much about nuclear power, but wouldn't large plants be more efficient? Most things work on economies of scale.

>>
>>65553188
I have no idea, mini reactors that can run a single factory or be transported in a tractor trailer or a spacecraft have been getting a decent amount of funding the past years. Bill Gates is in on one of the companies.
>>
>>65553195
I would like to think this has beneficial naval applications.
>>
>>65553193
I've been on the rig for two weeks. No internet. Try again tho, Screech.
>>
>>65553188
Large plants are more efficient as you correctly point out, but come with huge up front costs and lead times. It's also a waste if you don't actually need that much power.
>>
>>65553196
Also for power propagation for laser SHORAD.
>>
>>65553197
Yes, Ivan Ivanovich from Gulf of Amerikkka Oblast, that other thread just popped up today and got shut down before it even began. Nice try though.
>>
>>65553198
>you don't actually need that much power.
Well we kinda do. I saw a Euro proposal to bring down large NPP costs by building 40-50 standardized plants initially by French engineers, all over Europe, bringing down the cost to about $6 billion each by the final rollout. All told the plan was to generate 80GW
Seemed like a good idea, but again, I'm not an expert
>>
>>65553202
>I saw a Euro proposal
Lmao, so they'll end up building like 2 and they'll cost 60 billion each, only to be shut down after a year due to protests or something.
In any case, that's probably also a good argument in favor of small reactors now that I think about it.
>>
>>65553200
>Brings up Ukraine and Russia out of nowhere
Weird.
But hey I'll bite. It's also weird you accuse me of being Russian. Russians love Hegseth because
>He hates Europe
>He hates NATO

Anyway, this isn't a Ukraine thread Ivan, so lets not try to make it one.

TerraPower. They are building a reactor in Wyoming with the DOE and have deals with Berkshire Hathaway and Meta.
>>
>>65552869

>>
>>65553214
So do you have anything to say besides muh kegsbreath or whatever? All I've seen you do is just bitch without contributing anything.
>>
>>65553188
Once built a large plant will turn a higher percentage of produced thermal power into electric power. A small plant as envisioned by Valar could be mass manufactured on an assembly line, making them exponentially cheaper to install
>>
>>65553188
>>65553198
Large plants aren't being built by the people with money in the AI and doomsday bunker business.

>>
>>65553188
Yes, but also
>>65553229
This
And having a nuclear reactor that you can fit or even airlift to power a base, hospital, factory, bunker or install in a frigate, spaceceaft, opens up a lot of opportunities. Now you have a vehicle that doesn't need to worry about fuel for 20 years. Or you now have megawatts to power lasers to down incoming missiles and drones, or run a desalination plant, or perform water electrolysis.
>>
>>65553237
Military doesn't care. For most civilian use a large centralized plant is cheaper, provided of course you can insure the integrity of the grid.
>>
>>65553202
This is exactly how French build their nuclear energy. Bought a reactor type and built it 50 times.
I am even more mad, ever since I found out that Euratom wanted to push for the Western European countries to begin a massive nuclear buildout in the wake of 73 oil crisis but in reality only France and Sweden actually went with [the spirit of] the plan

Well yeah, because they different needs. A naval base needs to be on the water because their whole specialty is maritime warfare, and a base in San Diego is gonna have different logistical needs than a base in Oklahoma. As for consolidating bases, it’d be a massive cluster fuck that would turn already massive Army installations into medium sized cities that would be an absolute nightmare to police and maintain.

No, it's not. Feds infiltrate pretty much everything above a small friendgroup in such fields and are also monitoring all your messages and shit anyways, or more correctly your phone company is. The coordination to pull it off also doesn't exist in the modern fringe sphere. Yes, they are... but they tend to be bespoke designs, with each being built from scratch, and often a little different from each other. This makes them extraordinarily expensive to build, with no economies of scale and few lessons-learned from each build.

The whole promise of SMRs (Small Modular Reactors) is that they can be built quickly (lower finance costs and faster payback) and in large quantities (economies of scale and lessons learned leading to faster/better/cheaper production). The military is also interested in them specifically because they can be shipped anywhere the military sets up shop, and buried/fortified to protect them from attack. That improves a lot of the military's logistical needs (far less diesel needed for generators) for expeditionary bases.

Also, I believe there are something like 6 major bases that have partnered with 6 different nuclear companies for reactors to partially power said bases, as part of an experiment towards this end. That's in addition to what SecWar talked about.

The very first thing he did in his new position was say Ukraine can't win and they should accept whatever deal in put on the table for them. Do we have to remind ourselves what fantastic deals Trump's has presented to Zelensky the times Trump wasn't humiliating him in the Oval or how many times he's blame Ukraine for starting the war?
>>

They're fighting without any US supplied lethal aid at all.

>>
>>65554273
Not supplying them weaponry doesn't free them up to do anything you fart sniffing brown bastard it's done nothing but harm or hamper them. Same with the Iran War, that does not help them at all.

More to the discussion:

Not only is Trump obstructing aid, he is now demanding payment for the aid Ukraine's already received since Biden.
https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/us-seek-back-payment-europe-ukraine-aid-trump-says-2026-09-03/

Who does this help?
>>
>>65554256
That's just a statement of fact. Ukraine will not win the war. Russia has enough conscripts to bury all of Ukraine six feet deep in zigger corpses. The best Ukraine can hope for is that Putin dies and Russia gets bored and goes home before the last Ukranian is raped to death. It would be in their best interest to negotiate for an end to the war sooner rather than later.
>>

Conveniently all the art of the deals Trump has provided gives Russia all their gains and most of what they claim, including all the regional capitals they're nowhere near.

American weapons came with conditions against using them on deep strikes into Russian territory, after America ceased their aid to Ukraine Europe picked up all the slack since they still had a bunch of reserves lying around. Ukraine didn’t suffer at all from Trump’s election, if anything they’re doing better now than they ever have been, a 3:1 kill ratio at minimum, they haven’t even had to tap into their manpower reserves, and they’ve made liberals seethe all the while.
>>
>>65554276
>"We are going through an energy shock right now due to both the war in Ukraine - because, you know, Ukraine has decided that they want to blow up Russian energy assets and refined products, so that is creating upward price pressure on a global basis - and then the conflict in Iran," he told Fox News in an interview.

>>
>>65554196
No, but your domestic grid is something you need to prioritize in defending. If you can't, it means your ability to defend in general is at the least very compromised. On reflection I was a bit too assertive in saying "already ogre", it's nuanced. The enemy can hit your grid and you can repair it, Ukraine shows that. I guess it's more a case of, if the enemy has complete control of your rear area to the extent it can take down your entire grid -and- keep it down, then you're pretty much beaten. Notably, going back to Ukraine, Russia can do neither of those things.
>>
>>65554336
Liberals love to bitch constantly about Ukraine’s “patriarchal attitudes” about the men’s duty to stay and fight, or them allowing right-wing figures into their military, but thats because Ukraine had an actual war to win and can’t be concerned with offending liberals feelings over, you know, actually winning the fucking war.
>>
>>65554265
He also cut off US SIGINT (temporarily) and allowed Russia to make their biggest gains of the last 2 years. He cut arms shipments back. Ukraine literally begged, publicly, for Patriots. And Trump was going to allow them to produce them under license, but he backtracked on that too.

>giving a combatant command acquisition authority
This is fundamentally retarded. Of all the stupid shit this moron has pulled, this might actually be the most ruinous.

The combatant commands are resource hogs without institutional checks. They aren't responsible for anything but operations, so they continually make retarded asks on the state side formations that are actually supposed to generate the forces and materiel for them. You want to know why USN ship maintenance is so fucked? CCMDs keep demanding ships for operations and the CNO can't tell them "No" because they don't report to him. Army formations getting burnt out due to high peacetime optempo? CCMDs keep demanding brigade level deployments and the CSA can't tell them "No" because they report to people two levels above him.

The CCDRs justify everything as "urgent operational need" and SecDef and POTUS never say no because they don't want to be the one responsible for shorting anything defense related. They already parasitize the budget as is. The DoD has a $285 billion basic building maintenance backlog because they've had to siphon money away from basic tasks to shovel into the endless bonfire of the combatant commands. They are letting buildings and troops rot because INDOPACOM wants another Amphibious Ready Group to do a bullshit presence patrol. The commanders are incetivized to do it because they're evaluated on how much they do. There's no disincentive to do something because they don't actually pay for anything they do.

Giving these careerists who already dabble in the MIC's revolving-door corruption, actual budget authority is a horrendously bad idea. Giving them that authority with minimal project evaluations and advisement by the people they're supposed to buy from is beyond the pale of retardation.

Its open corruption.

Defense contractors want to sell their latest bullshit at high markups, but all the hoops of the acquisition process are designed to actually evaluate things in the military's favor. The product has to actually be needed, has do actually do what it says it will, has to be priced sensibly, and has to be built right. This just cuts everything out so that they can huck billions of dollars of shit before anyone can actually do the due diligence.

>inb4 somebody posts the expensive toilet seat
The process works far more often than it doesn't. Case in point is the F-35 program. Back when it was a budget wrecking dumpster fire, it turns out that the USMC general in charge was approving every Lockheed payment request because Major General Heinz, the program manager, was short cutting all processes to fraudulently (basically) approve billions in payments to Lockheed. He did it because the Lockheed contact spun him a corporate sob story and Heinz didn't bother to check to see if the story was true, or if that even obligated the JSF program to do anything about it. It was only after Secretary Gates sent someone in to audit, fired Heinz, and reset the program back to following regulations that it stopped being a dumpster fire.
