Orlando Perez, an 18 year old high school student from Chicago, has been charged in the murder of Selena Reyes-Hernandez, a 37 year old trans woman.According to NBC News, Perez "admitted to shooting the victim in the head and back once in custody". According to Fox News, Perez "even went back to her Marquette Park home a second time so he could shoot her again". The victim has been identified by authorities as Ramiro Reyes-Hernandez, although she went by the name "Selena".The MotiveDetectives believe that Perez got upset once he went home with the victim and found out she was trans. Brendan Deenihan, chief of detectives for Chicago police remarked that "once the offender realized that this victim was actually transgender, the offender became very upset". Assistant State's Attorney James Murphy said that "He thought that was enough so he ran out and left the residence. But he kept seeing her face, so he went back there to do it again(shooting)". Communication from Chicago police: "Perez was arrested on June 14th, 2020 at approximately 3:17 p.m. in the 3300 Block of W. 72nd St in connection with a homicide that occurred on May 31st, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. in the 3300 Block of W. 71st St. In that incident, Perez shot a 37-year-old man multiple times in the back and head while inside the victim's residence after the two had been involved in a domestic-related argument. The victim was pronounced on scene. Through investigation, which included extensive utilization of the Area One Technology Center, Perez was identified and ultimately placed into custody. No further information is available at this time."
The National Black Justice Coalition released a statement saying "Selena is the 17th transgender person to have been murdered, thus far, in 2020, that we know of. All Black Lives Matter, and activists are working for increased protection and respect for transgender lives
