You don't strictly have to wear makeup. Heck, the field I work in tends to have less attractive girls, and they tend to put in less effort into their appearance. Heck, when I go outside, most of the time it's to get groceries or in a place where any nice clothes would get ruined. I still pass though. Voice training, body language, basic minimum of grooming help. If you're insecure, pluck your eyebrows a bit or something. This is a classic example of something being le in your head.
