I'm a late transitioner because I wasn't allowed to transition sooner, and I stupidly thought I could repress. I devoted all of my energies to school and work to distract myself. I became a nurse surgical assistant and have been in literally thousands of surgeries or exploratory procedures (like colonoscopy) where the patients were sedated. We have a huge trans population here where I live, this means that, over the years, we've had many trans patients. You would think that surgeons would have empathy for us and treat us in a dignified manner? You're wrong. I can't tell you how many times I've witnessed MDs making fun of their trans patients or exposing their genitals when they were sedated. Making fun of them, checking their hands when they were in doubt, laughing with everybody in the surgery room. When I started transitioning, I did complain and I was fired for whistleblowing. I was fired illegally! I sued and I lost because nobody has empathy for trans people. There's just too much I would like to share. I could write a book. It just shocks me that doctors, of all people, would dehumanize and humiliate their trans patients like this. You're not even safe with surgeons who perform gender-affirming surgeries. All of them put more effort into their cis female patients. And I know for a fact that a surgeon who is now dead and used to do SRS said that he would never attempt to recreate a realistic vagina because it would be unethical and that he made sure he always left telltale signs as to avoid trans people tricking straight men.

There was a story a while ago about a guy who accidentally left his phone recording, and managed to catch his surgeons making fun of him while he was under. Managed to sue and actually won. Doctors and nurses are bullies and sometimes rapists. Doctors because of their superiority complexes and difficulty to replace, and nurses because they can. They say they only talk shit while they are alone and no one can hear them but we all know that's not true. I heard the nurses at the psych ward talking shit about us behind the counter. I wish there were better protections for patients. Best advice I can give for anyone worried about this is to never assume someone is good/kind just because of who they are. Doctors can be rapists. The little old lady down the block could be a murderer. Always be vigilant.

I came out as trans in 2005. It was commonplace back then to get sexually abused by medical providers. you had to pay through the nose for medical treatment (being trans usually excluded you from health insurance, and no transition coverage), see a psychiatrist or therapist for a super long time to get the paperwork for transitioning, and go to one of only a few different hospitals for transition. Doctors, medical assistants, and therapists would use the social power they had to harass, molest, or rape patient, knowing they couldn't really go anywhere else and had no credibility. That's what happens in a transphobic society where accessing treatment is really hard.
