I feel like the issue of flirting is only problematic if it's overt and heavy handed. Flirting is mostly subtext, if you're doing it right it's plausibly deniable for everyone involved and only as awkward as you make it. And even if you are overt, you can just take a rejection graciously and nobody will mind that much, or if they do they're the one that's weird.
