Something I have noticed is that men imagine trans women as 'like women, if I liked women'. I believe the way we are othered allows men to project whatever fantasy they want onto us. If we are framed socially as women adjacent, but not actually women (see how OP uses 'real woman' to describe his wife), then men are able to fill in the blanks on what we are. We can embody the traits they find desirable about women (that we are good listeners, empathetic to his needs, would sexually fulfill him, whatever) but can be distanced from the misogynistic assumptions he holds about other women (they're gold diggers, they don't care about me, whatever).The end result is that we are subjected to a magnified version of the same misogyny they put on all women.
