As someone who actually remembers the early web from being online from when I was like 7 I'd even argue that the modern web is both more toxic and more unsafe for kids than it ever was in the 2000s. I often hear people saying that the old web was "toxic and problematic" but most communities where pretty isolated, if you went to a forum that was too toxic you could just move somewhere else and find a better community more your style. The shit you see on mainstream social media nowadays is shit you would find on shady websites back in the 2000s, not on big company mainstream sites. Even kids stuff back then used to be decently moderated to keep predators away but now shit like Roblox openly encourages them for profits and you have streamers appealing to children to sell them on gambling and no one is really realising this or talking about it. The reality is that modern kids/teens think anyone above 19 or so is quite literally lame and a loser (or 'unc' as they say now).
