When politics become transphobic in both the UK and the US, they all get leaned on behind the scenes to echo these policies. New Zealand is simply more susceptible and less resilient to this pressure (on this particular topic) than Australia or Canada have been.

NZ is my baseline for how fucked things are. America is too unpredictable, Britain is too dominated by its incestuous ruling class and their obsessions, and other countries are too culturally different to make any inferences from. NZ is (contrary to expectations) a little conservative, but basically sane. They put up a good test case because NZ First introduced a bill to define "woman" in line with UK brainworms, but it's hard to tell whether it's still progressing or whether it's basically been filtered out (like so many other minor bills) before coming to a vote. If it passes, things are bleak. If it comes to a vote and is rejected, there's still everything to play for. If it doesn't happen because it's filtered, well, you learn nothing until the next election.
