I've been bingewatching this show recently with a friend who really likes it, and it's been kinda wonderful. I've made it up to season two and it's really adorable so far, it's made me cry several times and I like it quite a lot.I'm fairly young (18) and wasn't really sapient enough to properly digest this show as it came out, but I know it has a really bad reputation, one that kept me away from it until recently. Why is that? I know a lot of it is just homophobia and a refusal to engage with it on a sincere level, but I also know a lot of queer people don't like it as well. I don't really see anything wrong so far, or atleast anything warranting the hate the show got. I think it's cute, and I find it a little sad nothing like it can be made in this current landscape (well, aside maybe Fionna and Cake.)
>>41919147Some people have valid reasons to dislike it, others just seethe because lesbians in muh childrens showa and bandwagoning off of popular hating videos without even attempting to form their own opinion. It somehow ended up being too woke for the normies but too "fascist" for the wokes so it was popular to shit on. It is good tho, won't spoil anything but while there are definitely parts that could be improved it's still nice and was the best they could do considering the show was getting dropped for being too gay
>>41919147omg i did the same thing with one of my girlfriends when i was 18, that girlfriend is more of a sister now that i got out that relationship but still the show is great and adorable and made me cry alot because certain things reminded me alot of my terf mother
>>41919147>Why is that?two reasons mainly, i thinkone being that the show is extremely slow to start, where it is very episodic and doesn't feel very constructive until you realize way later in retrospect that it was all establishing the characters.second is that there was an infamous trans woman who did an incredibly bad faith analysis of the show and uploaded a multiple hour series on youtube about it, that framed it in a very bad light for a while as well.the real, legitimate critique is that the big final conflict felt kind of forced with how fast it wrapped up, but imo that was somewhat remedied by the "Steven Universe Future" sequel series in a lot of ways.>>41919222basically this, yeah. there are definitely ways it could've been better, but the only reason i care enough to say that is because i liked it overall so much
>>41919147So much of the Steven Universe hate was from homophobia and people who just wanted to bully the fanbase for being mostly young lgbt people. The show’s not bad! I loved it while it was airing, the later seasons get rocky bc of production issues but s1-3 are very nostalgic to me lol. Wish the games were still on steam tho
>>41919222Fascist? How? I don't understand. And perhaps I'm too woke on account of being a tranny but this show doesn't feel like, insanely preachy or too woke either. I think if you refuse to be sincere with it and are just obnoxiously cynical it's probably very annoying but so is almost anything else. Are cissoids just like that?>>41919234Awww that's really adorable. This show is kind of great if you are in the middle of an emotional metamorphosis, I'm really glad I was shown it during this part of my life specifically.
>>41919147my ex liked this show and would send me songs and caption them w “us” lmaoi still listen to “something entirely new” every now and again bc of them
>>41919324A lot of people didn’t really like the message of “forgive everyone! Including genocidal villains!” That the show kinda had
finding out the baby gays are still finding steven universe is like finding out they reintroduced an endangered species of wolf to yellowstone. nature is healing.>t. ancient decrepit millennial
>>41919324Forgot to attach a Peridot :/>>41919289Most cartoon network shows around this era are really slow to start, adventure time, summer camp island, and SU all follow the formula of initially starting off episodic to establish the characters and then developing into an overarching plot. I don't think this is a bad approach to take at all, it's one I'm really nostalgic for, and I honestly really enjoyed seeing the characters just interact with eachother through S1. There are only a few episodes so far I'd say didn't do much. And yea the Lilly orchard videos, from what I can tell those were made in really bad faith. The friend I'm watching it with has been kind of rambling when various points from it come up and shes been explaining why they are nonsense. I hate YouTube commentators, but especially commentators from around that era. I wish I could go back and strangle my younger self for being a leafyishere kid.>>41919314Awww that's really sweet. It's kind of a really welcome surprise to see people from this shithole website being sincere about something considered cringe for more than 5 minutes.
>>41919325Awww that's so cute,.,., I like the outro song a lot, I have a fuck ton of guilt over my repression which I have only just recently began to truly leave behind. It reminds me of the friend I keep bringing up, she's super graceful and calm and sweet, and I'm an annoying loud retard with anger issues. >>41919349No spoilers >:/>>41919377I'm a vulnerable scared estrogen-induced pubescent boymoder can you be my mother Mrs millenial
>>41919147it was ok overalli hated the ending though and never watched anything they were making after that>>41919432>No spoilers >:/shouldn't have posted about it then 2 seasons in
>>41919324>>41919349the show is literally this image
>>41919378>Most cartoon network shows around this era are really slow to starttrue, and a lot of the people who cry about steven universe being slow to start are also huge adventure time fans. as someone who showed up late to that show, its the same thing.not even saying its bad, i love both shows, its just a little blind of them.>SU all follow the formula of initially starting off episodic to establish the characters and then developing into an overarching plotyeah exactly, it also progresses into an even more episodic show as time goes on.>And yea the Lilly orchard videoslmao yeah thats the one. >I wish I could go back and strangle my younger self for being a leafyishere kid.commentary youtube is only bad when you only engage with it on a surface level. if you take the time to form your own opinion, they can be a lot betterbut ye leafy is a rough one lmao>>41919349>>41919559it kinda is, but i feel like a childrens tv show skewing toward the overly forgiving side is objectively better than skewing the same amount toward unforgiving.>>41919147>nothing like it can be made in this current landscapenoticed this late but, i would recommend the owl house, that is similar in a lot of ways, and i really enjoyed it, even if they were forced to rush the final season.
>>41919773>"it kinda is, but i feel like a childrens tv show skewing toward the overly forgiving side is objectively better than skewing the same amount toward unforgiving."It probably should be unforgiving to bad peopleWe aktually need a lot more people unwilling to blanketly forgive without penanse ,and as a result ,also karing too little about immoral behavior
>>41919912well, you are kinda loading it by saying "bad people"it is heavily implied that the diamonds didn't even recognize humans as sentient creatures, and were also heavily conditioned into the gem hierarchy like everyone else.and when shown otherwise, they go through the effort of making amends.the diamonds are shown to be victims of the social conditioning in the same way as everyone else. the difference being that their status on the hierarchy allowed them to hide it better. even white diamond is essentially defeated by becoming off-color, something seen as unacceptable even to the pinnacle of their society.thats not to say that everything is suddenly okay, but there is a huge difference between that and an actually evil individual abusing people and making no effort to change things for the better.
>>419191471) perfect lesbian getting cucked by the most cartoonishly ugly and useless scrote alive, is actual rage bait. Rose quartz should be tortured to death.2) weird copout “and then suddenly everyone got along” ending that doesn’t make any sense.
>>41919289Oh yeah, that tranny hate video for SU peak trans’d me instantly. Like everything about SU is dripping with this super sincere and honest lesbian backdrop, and he so intensely demonstrated a hatred and non-understanding of lesbians and women and WLW, and had such a profoundly and deeply male perspective on it and hated it specifically because it was a female gaze lesbian show, that I was like “wait is this what trans women are like? Scrotes with seething hatred of lesbians calling themselves lesbians?” I looked more into it and found out that yeah, that’s what most trannies are, and I’ve despised them ever since.Fuck that guy. Hope he 41%’d.
>>41920298>Fuck that guy. Hope he 41%’dok i meani don't think death is warranted even when the analysis is THAT bad
>>41920250greg did nothing wrong tho
>>41920298It is genuinely quite a feat that you came out of watching Steven Universe as a transphobe saying you want people to 41%. So did you only watch the parts where there's lesbian relationships on screen to self-insert into and just mute everything else, or....?
>>41920250did she really take thousands of years to even try anything with a human? theyre so similar in appearance

>why did people hate this showthe real reason is tumblrit became inextricably linked in perception with the tumblr queer nonbinary transmasc culture stuff that this board was adamantly opposed to for a long timeseems people have mostly forgotten that now
>>41919147i was about your age when it was first coming out, and i stopped watching and left the series unfinished for a long time. frustrating releases schedule, lots of filler.but, when i rewatched it and finished it i did really like it and there were no pacing issues.
>>41919147Like most good things, the fandom sucks and ruins it. Behind the scenes there was some some production issues that got people all messed up, but that drama is not part of the TV show.
>>>/co/adult cartoon fans w/o families tend to be hated, normies don't understand why theyd like such a thing and the obvious conclusion (they are pedophiles) is assumed. especially if the cartoon doesn't try to rub in its poignancy or otherwise liken itself to high art, or ironically go the direction of crass and ugly as possible. of course in the case of some shows like MLP or SU this hate is somewhat deserved, pedos are attracted to any childrens media esp. if its fandom facilitates interaction between 20-50yos and 12-16. Steven Universe is a show that, like madoka or other magical girl shows (which Mx. Sugar is evidently a fan of) aimed at the feel-like-they-must-grow-up age range. fandom pedos are pretty inescapable however, at least until society changes radically they will try to fuck kids, whether that be specific imagery or marginal ideals that are uncanny or off putting like terfism. with that said I watched the whole show and one of the movies, I think I was too much of a teen to like it at first and didn't engage until I was 19. others ITT have mentioned the pacing and Tumblr audience, for me it was the more mainstream Tumblr audience and the storytelling in general which could also be blamed on networks it moved between. this explains a lot of plot holes or tonal abruptness, such as the uncle grandpa tie-in, it also explains why the show centered around an obnoxious male lead and his 1d father when every other character and relationship was more interesting. at times I watched simply because it was so-bad-its-good but still had its moments, also I was emotionally invested in lapidot.I will say that storytelling aside the setting seemed underdeveloped too in the exact way that made other tumblr works like nimona or she-ra unserious, I think that plus CalArts style are why I found it much lazier than say madoka magica, as much as I enjoyed what was well executed like the music, which was my favorite aspect.>>41920298average Steven Universe fan
