Yeah wizards are powerful later but they start weak, and more importantly there are plenty of rules that make them tricky. Vancian casting greatly restricts the power that comes from flexibility, attrition-based gameplay means you actually will run out of spells if you're not careful, take 1 hp of damage before you cast (at the end of the round) and the spell fizzles, high level enemies often have straight-up Magic Resistance %.Modern players cry if they're restricted in any way whatsoever. Old D&D understood fun comes from limitations. The major classes didn't overlap nearly as much and that's what created party synergy and tactics. Now every PC can do everything well, more or less. It's the equivalent of Harvard undergrads claiming disability accommodations because God Forbid you place the slightest impediment in their way.

I play a homebrewed kind of B/X D&D so I only think I understand 5e magic, but simply making magic something you don't cast during battle radically changes both the feel of the game as well as the mechanical implementation.
