Yeah. I'm 34, but I got involved with my local LGBT community (activism, teaching, running support spaces) and came out very young for the time period (12-14). It's the Bay Area so there's a lot of elder queers around. Many are traumatized as fuck still from the AIDS crisis and the homophobia/transphobia from their youth, though.

Worse, from what I can tell of the timeline, this was after homosexuality was decriminalised in our jurisdiction. He teared up and said he wished I was around when he was younger. He told meof how scary it was to be 18 and going through the court process. He seemed to avoid a conviction, which was reassurring, yet it did little to stop me wishing I was actually around back then so I could have helped more.Some time after that dinner, I befriended an 18-19 year old trans girl who later lambasted me for not doing enough for the community because I wouldn't attend a trans youth protest, I believed I had done enough, and I said my activist days were over. During Pride March day, she shoved me and she furiously threatened to kill herself, by jumping into the river next to her, over how desperately she wanted to fuck my girlfriend and how distraught she was that she had been caught cheating and got dumped. Coincidentally, she was having her meltdown by the same river my former gay friend had been arrested at, and where a gay man was once notoriously murdered in a homophobic attack. I thought to myself "in his time, they drowned gay men to death in the river, now, mentally ill trans women do it to themselves for free." I talked her down from her suicide threats and just kept thinking about how times had changed.As an aside, I did end up attending a trans youth protest and she wasn't even there. In case you're wondering how that particular part turned out.
