Everyone knows my issue with gay writers. My theory is not that its because they like males of course. We have had plenty of great writers that were, and othe artists too.

My theory is that it has something to do with being raised in Gay Inc.™, this sort of parallel universe thats mapped overtop of the reality that everyone else outside of it lives in. Its like the Trooniverse, or any other religious mythology that superimposes mythical narratives overtop the normal everyday world to explain things that dont comport with reality the way its followers wish to see it. ("It was gods will" etc).

Ever since 'gay science' became a mainstream thing, right behind it came gay science fiction. Gays previously already had a generally realistic existence in a sort of shadow world, but it was based in reality, so it had realistic explanations for things like "gaydar" or the "gay mafia".

But after the gay gene meme became a substitute for thinking and a conveniently vague explanation for involuntary, unwitting and socially maligned impulses, that departure from reason became the premise for all sorts of new obnoxiously brainless ideas.

And since then, people raised and steeped in it, including the straights who clumsily buy into anything trendy, have produced this comic book universe, one that seems suspiciously lifted from the X-men universe of mutants living among us. Meanwhile, the Trooniverse leans more towards the supernatural, with themes of spirits, girl ghosts living in male brains and such.

My point is that if you believe you are living in an alternate reality, then you arent even trying to interact with the one the rest of us share. So your skillset in interacting with every day people and their motivations is going to be poorly calibrated.

And this is what you see in 'gay movies', especially gay romances.

Its always the same memes. Two twinklets meet, share some kitchy moment, and suddenly they jump to 'they lived happily ever after'...

Okay, so moving away from all that. You know what the gay universe needs for real gritty textured gay drama?

Crime. If you can write believable crime dramas, you can do the rest. Its the "believable" part. The story has to make sense. In crime dramas, there is risk, so the audience is atuned to what does and doesnt add up about motivations. Thats why crime dramas are the first to get excoriated by audiences for plot holes.

You have to actually sit and think if the story makes sense.

And thats what I like. I mean, "Mr. Ripley" and a handful of other gay tragedies involving crime have worked well, because the focus usually isnt on the gay part, but rather the story or character.

Gay audiences tend not to be impressed with these though, and straight audiences shuffle uncomfortably if its too on the nose, so the easiest solution make the 'gay' part ambiguous (like "Murder by Numbers").

But gay audiences want to see explicit romances, not buffoonish winks and nods. (Can we agree the culture is past that?)

Me personally, I like what I can relate to, like most people. And like many here probably (as a fellow degenerate) I too had a 'colorful youth' and a rebellious hedonist phase. Which is a polite way of saying getting in trouble. It just sort of comes with being a proud social deviant.

So I like those "wilding" type crime dramas with the ambiguous gay subtext, the gay "Bonnie and Clyde" type movies. Dirty. Gritty. Tragic. Wild unexpected twists. Almost always two (or more) young punks making their claim in the world any way they can and motherfucking the law, until it goes bad of course.

But thats real life. Its raw. Its an adventure into the unknown with characters you regret meeting. Its putting out fires and panicking from consequences.

Thats a good crime drama. And I firmly believe thats what gay romances need.

tldr we need more felon gay writers.

Fuck yeah, the drug scene and the gay world ALWAYS overlap, so there is a lot of meat on that bone. I would happily watch a gay crime drama that involves the drug scene. Come to think of it, I have seen a lot of drug heist or upstart type movies like that. But they usually have gay side characters, not main characters.

I think that goes back to the earlier screed. As soon as a writer thinks "gay" is the main plot point, they bring in a bunch of tired tropes and gay it up until thats all it is.

And dont get me wrong. I mean, I get it. These assholes have to get paid too. Sales matter. In theory, its ALL that matters.

But this doesnt satisfy me as an explanation for why there is not more of it. Crime dramas usually dont need a giant budget.

But nowadays, its not enough to make a movie. Producers want series. And to be fair, gay series have done better and have a wider audience.

I am fond of posting this movie scene, an old French movie thats a great coming of age romance mixed with some strong ideas about aging, hedonism and sure enough, there is a drug dealing and prostitution sub plot.

But it wasnt expensive. And my point is that it can be done.
