I think the toothpaste is out of the tube there. They can punish us excessively but it's not like people don't know what we are now. Who knows though. I was out 21 years ago, but not 50. Then again, when I came out there was already a community of trans and nonbinary people, both online and in-person, some of whom had transitioned decades before.
