Even today in modern western societies, there are so many religious people that if you say "wizards aren't real", they will try to ruin your life over it, and demand protections and recognition from the government. we seriously need something like what the japanese got at the end of world war 2, where the americans forced the emperor to publicly admit that he wasn't actually a kami.
