you need to be really fucking careful about where you go with this ("progressives" generally aren't) for it is a complicated matter, but yeah, no, the entire project of civilization up to now can be summed up as gradually doing better than the natural things and impulses while preserving liberty, so everyone can live long peaceful prosperous lives together.
