maybe if they were busy trying to source mare urine from the indians they would have gotten intel to not follow the huckster guy who tried to give them a "shortcut" way but the shortcut was rougher roads at higher elevation and they left 3-4 weeks too late because he was greedy and was helping another party make it through his route so he sorta left them stranded on the way and they weren't sure where to go
and they didn't just go the normal way, which was longer but more of a sure thing
