Everyone is so focused on the “don’t tell” part that they forgot the “don’t ask” part. When you are in the military, if you’re straight, they get all up in your personal life. Roto rooter type shit, asking all kinds of personal questions and invading your privacy. First, if you were gay, everyone knew, nobody fucking cared. If you were down and out to join the military in the first place, being gay was the most vanilla of things. You may get a little hazed but everyone got hazed for something, that’s how it worked.Second, nobody could ask. If anyone of significant authority “asked” it’s their ass because they broke the rules. In my unit we had some dude that got caught with a porn video of himself getting fucked by another guy and that is STILL not evidence enough. You’d have to literally send out an email, documented, or have multiple witness, with multiple officers, officially stating you were gay. If you tried to approach some random lieutenant or something he’d act like he never heard you because that’s paperwork and heat that he doesn’t want to deal with. Ya’ll could’ve had it made in the military but for reasons decided to fuck yourselves over.
