I've reached a year trooning out and the need to decide on a name is intense. How did you decide on a name? Did you know for a while what your name was or did you have to shop around?
>>42259023I just kept my nameA name wouldn't make me pass. Looking and acting like a woman makes me pass
>>42259023I did the fem version of my given name (eq. Andrew -> Andrea) because from a young age I have internalized that that would have been my name had I been born a girl.
>>42259023I named myself after an anime character (first name) and a video game character (last name).
>>42259023The name I'm using is just the first one I felt okay with and didn't feel unworthy of. Not my "goal name" per se. I have a friend who decided hers using a bracket. Another friend who rolled a die. Another friend who named herself after her favorite author. Another friend who asked her mom. Another friend who named herself after her favorite character from a play. Another friend chose the female version of her birth name.
>>42259062That's true, but hearing my birthname makes my skin crawl. >>42259092I chose my current name similarly. I was enbycoping and "came out" socially three years ago. I went with the first vaguely feminine nickname I could that still gave me plausible deniability if overheard by my family. Plus I didn't have the gall to choose a woman's name because I look incontrovertibly like a man. IDGAF anymore, and I want a pretty name, so I'm deciding between Adrianne and Therese.
>>42259023hi anon i was in the same position as you. IMO when picking your own name as a tranny there is no right choice but some wrong choices. depending on your situation you have a few different options and things to consider. (iG = in general)1. Your name should (iG) fit your age. If you are 35 years old you should avoid popular names from 60 years ago and popular names from today. Look online for names that were popular for your gender within a few years of your birth.2. Your name should (IMO and iG) fit your family. If you have two brothers named Joe and Ken, your chosen name shouldn't be Leopold or Maximilian.3. You can try asking friends or family directly. Depending on your outing status or closeness this can be simple or impossible. If your parents are amenable to the idea, then that is your best bet. In either route, know that it's your name and have veto power, but be humble and accept their input.4. If your name is unisex, you can just keep it. I did this for ~a year after people knew what I was. Know that this comes with unique upsides and downsides. No worrying about name changes apart from perhaps a middle name, no "please call me XYZ," etc. However, something to know with being a tranny is that people who knew you before will (IMO) never see you as the gender you are now, and using the same name as the old you will cement that view. It will certainly muddy knowing if someone is misgendering you or is otherwise unsupportive. -4a. Avoid unisex names (iG). Psychologically this can be a hesitation to jump right in, so to speak. But you may not always feel apprehension, so try to get past fears of a gendered name. You're already a tranny, lol6. Avoid stereotypical names. Please don't be a Lilith or Aidan. Not only may these conflict with points 1 or 2, but if assimilation in life is a goal of yours then with some people this will be like wearing a pronoun pin or pride flag.
>>42259023I psyched myself out of picking a name for a while because I felt so strongly that it had to be perfect or meaningfulmy family has a naming scheme, everyone's name starts with the same letter except for mine, so I looked at names that started with that letter and picked one that sounded "normal" (a name somebody in my generation would have). I made it a point not to pick the same name as somebody I've known. I also looked up what people consider stereotypical "trans names" so I could avoid thoseonce I picked out that name, I stuck with it and it kinda just worked
>>42259289This helped massively, wow. I looked into the census data and fell in love with the name Valentina. Now I just have to come out to everyone I know again for the second time. My friends already think I'm an indecisive ass bitch, this'll really take the cake
>>42259023Consider Embarazada
If you want to get stealth eventually, don't pick and cringe names or names with some deep meaning for you.Just look at the most popular now names or the names from like 10-15 years ago.Better to pick name that fit your nationality.Remember, usually names are given to us by parents, so they should fit to your roots and surroundings.Better not to pick the name same with your cis fem friends or family members, so they wouldn't associate themself with your transition in some weird way.Fun fact, some time ago I knew a trans girl who had name "Lilith Eva Maria" (Lilith as a surname). She looked very honish and didn't do shit to pass.Don't be like her.
Speaking of names, I really can’t decide on mine, any input? This is the list I haveRosanne (alternate version of my mother’s middle name, like it but I hate my mother)Rosalyn (alternate version of my mother’s middle name, like it but I hate my mother)Diana (my sister is named after a Roman god)Lucia (gender swapped deadname)Clara (I just like it)Arwen (I just like it but worried it’s clocky)
>>42259590The only good one here is Diana. Please do not name yourself Arwen ftlog
>>42259062Post proof, Big Jim.
>>42259491>ValentinaOof may as well call yourself “Jimmifer”.
>>42259023BoudicaTeutaGallaCartimanduaArtemisia
>>42259023ask someone close to you who is NOT a TRANNY so you don’t end up being Alice, Lilith, or Sakura
>>42259658i met a theymab named Cherry once and i wanted to die
>>42259651Analtolia
>>42259635Just curious what exactly is wrong with the other names?
Name yourself 'Passing' because that would be the closest you will get imo
Shit I meant to reply to >>4259615
>>42259491You should wait to tell your friends. You should be absolutely sure about your name before you tell anyone you know. Do more research and find a few more names and narrow them down after a while. This is forever and deserves not to be rushed. You will be viewed as a flip-flopper if you keep changing your name.>ValentinaWhere are you from where this was ever a common name?
>>42259590if you do clara do clarie or smth and have clara be a nickname>>42259635valentina works if youre latino
>>42259289Some addenda to this list:3. The exceptions to friends and family to ask is do NOT ask another tranny or tranny community for advice on this. This isn't universal advice but so. many. trannies are godawful with their names. Some want to stand apart with names like Lilith and Zoe which may go completely against a goal of passing. Some groups will yass queen you into a bad name. This goes for both trans men and women, and yes I am including (You)r friends and friend groups. Decide this for yourself.4. Changing your non-unisex name to a gender swapped version (John to Jane, Camille to Cameron) is IMO analogous to not changing a unisex name. You can still do it, but it has a lot of the same issues as keeping a unisex name.
>>42259992>changing your non-unisex name to a gender swapped version (John to Jane, Camille to Cameron) is IMO analogous to not changing a unisex name. You can still do it, but it has a lot of the same issues as keeping a unisex name.my name is Cameron and I haven't even tried to change it or use a different name because I've been coping that it's unisex but I think it's almost exclusively a male name nowadays fuck. should I actually try to change it? ;~;I'm not really sure what feminine form of it would be best, I like Camila, Camille, and Camilla but it's so hard to decide...
>>42259023Five years before I’d come up with a pun that included a name for my Reddit username, so I just used that.
>>42259992Is Steve a good name for mtf?
>>42259908I'm confused as to why this reads so dumbfounded when Valentina is a flyover name in a shit ton of countries--most importantly my home country, Chile. Yeah, it'd be goofy as fuck if I was Yakub-borne--in the same way it'd be goofy as fuck to use an anime name--but it's been a consistent top 50 in Chile for like two decades, and a top 400 name worldwide
I know a cis woman named valentina
>>42260208
i was fortunate to be able to (mostly) genderbend my deadname. it felt right and it eased people i already knew much better into my new name,
I like the name Chara as a first name as an obvious homage and different spelling of Cara, I was friends with a few different people called that when I was younger so I feel like it wouldn't stand out too much unless it's in writing, something about it feels comforting even though I'm pretty sure if someone sees the spelling then they might put two and two together
>>42260411>words words words Chile words wordsnext time just say Chile>>42260320Yep go get em honey>>42260208Ultimately your own experience is most important. There are women named Cameron, but keeping the same name does come with issues. If you've been transitioning a while and are gendered female after giving people that name then you can opt to keep it.My birth name is also unisex-leaning-male but there are famous women with the name.>>42260483Cameron is her last name in the show :)
>>42260208My female boss is named Cameron. It’s definitely a little rarer though. The thing about names is that it’s easier to pass off male names as female than vice versa. The name Courtney for example was male only until a book was published about a girl named Courtney who was uncomfortable with being female. This caused Courtney to shift to being a female name until now where it’s rare to see it as a male name. The exception might be names that have very strong male associations in pop culture like Steve or John
>>42260704people are gonna think you got it from undertale
>>42259023I lucked out with a unisex birth name so it wasn't my decision obviously, but my parents chose it because of ethnic ties. You could look into that if you have any notable ones that mean anything to you.
>>42261857I know which is way I'm a bit hesitant about it, I am British which is maybe way Cara doesn't sound too unique for me since I have heard it be used by cis people before
>>42261814Chile
>>42259023does max -> maeve sound alright? i want to keep my first initial but i hate every other m- girl name. i dunno if mae/maeve is clocky though, i’ve never met a cis woman named either
>>42259091your lack of humility is based. Wish I had the courage to make my troon name after one of my favorite characters or some shit.
>>42262638maeve isnt clocky at all its pretty !
