She’s all about self-determination, resisting unfair expectations, and resignation to living in a world that’s too small-minded to appreciate her. But Daria was also often portrayed as being bitterly cynical but right about everything, smarter than everyone around her including all the teachers, and totally justified in mostly sitting around and privately judging everyone else. She’s far more interested in being against what everyone else is into than for anything herself. I got the sense that the creators only started giving Daria flaws and fleshing out her character in the last couple of seasons because they had written themselves into a corner. She lives a very masculine fantasy of idle, smug superiority. Think about how little distinguishes her from Sheldon Cooper as a character.
